What age did you stop using crate at night? I'm just curious...for those who crate trained their puppy at night at what age did you stop using it? Or do any of you with older dogs still use it? |
Mine still sleep in their crates! They have come to love them!! When we walk upstairs at night to go to bed they automatically go into their crates!!:) Oliver is 2 and Brooklyn is 10 mos. |
What age did you stop using crate at night? I am still crating my 11 month old puppy Bella. I could not trust her to be free in the house at night, as she will eat or chew anything she finds, if I am not keeping a close eye on her. Eventually she will sleep in my bed with me when she matures.:animal36 |
Do you have their crates in your room and do you still close them at night or leave them open? Thanks for your reply! |
Winston slept in a pen until he was 6 months old...and he's slept in bed with us ever since. |
I also crate train Chloe until this week. She has been sleeping with us for 4 nights. When I leave to go somewhere, I put her in her crate. I think with Chloe a little is good at a time. I will try taking the crate away maybe in a month or two. She just turned 1 on 11/15/08. We have only owned her for 6 months and she was not potty trained. She has had to learn a lot in 6 months. |
Maximus was crate trained and started sleeping with us when he turned 1. We still have his crate but it is rarely used now. |

Zoe wasn't crated until we got Peppee. I felt sorry for him because he would just cry all night. I bought a bigger crate and they both go in it...now I need to buy a bigger one that all three can fit a little better. They go into their "house" whenever we leave the house and at night. |
I stopped using her crate about a month or two after I got her. So she was 3-4months. She would always whine, bark, scratch at 4-5am because she wanted to get up and play... she wouldn't go potty. She wanted to hang out with my cats. So I decided to let her sleep with me in bed. Now she sleeps through the whole night, sometimes even longer than I do! Little brat. |
I've never crated a dog, but they do have their own bed. We tried sleeping with Zada and Azrael before we got Razael but Azrael snores LOUDLY, and then when we got Razael, Zada was so traumatized she got diarrhea and you can imagine what she did in our bed. That was it for us. :( I think it's best they have their own bed anyway. |
Keoki was crate trained when I would leave the house but has always slept with me ( except for the first week I got him) and the crate training lasted a year until he learned how to unlock the crate from the inside out!!!! My little stinker!!!! So that ended that!!! |
Chloe (she's 8 mo. old )sleeps in her playpen at night. I had her in a small crate at first but she whined and hated it . We decided not to crate train her because she uses potty pads and since we were not taking her out every couple hours to pee , we decided a playpen would hold everything and still make her feel secure. In her playyard she has her bed and potty pad and snuggle toys , so she doesn't whine (most of the time ) . Our other dog Sydney ( 3 yrs. old ) was crate trained , and she still sleeps in her crate at night. We have considered letting the dogs sleep with us or our kids ( well the big dog sleeping with the kids and Chloe with us )But both dogs seem fine with their sleeping arrangements , so we just leave it as is. |
Abbey stopped sleeping in her crate when she was about 7 months old. I kept her in her crate at night when I first got her bc she was not trained and peed in my bed the first night I got her. As soon as she was potty trained and could sleep through the night, she began sleeping with me. She now sleeps with me every night and we cuddle. And she makes sure to wake me up in the morning and tell me she needs to go out. We've worked out a routine. |
I think it is better to have them crate trained. My Sassy was crate trained until I went on vacation and had to have two of my sister in laws here to "babysit". I left strict instructions for them to crate her at bedtime and when they went out. Sassy never minded her crate before that, in fact she would go in without me even asking her to. Evidently something changed because when I got back she absolutely would not sleep in it anymore! She barked and whined til I finally let her sleep with me so I could get some sleep. Now I am looking for a new crate to fit on my night table and re-introduce her to it. I wouldnt worry about it except when we had a tornado warning I had ahard time getting and keeping them in the crate for safety reasons. And in case of an emergency if they need to be crated then they wont stress it so much! If yours are already crate trained then do yourself AND them a favor and keep it that way. :D |
My puppy is ten months old. He sleeps on his doggie mat, next to my computer chair, or on my bed every night. . I believe in crate training dogs until they learn the house rules. In addition, I use crates to help my dogs adjust to being confined, because groomers and veterinarians use creates. He slept in his crate until the age of nine months. Before nine months, I could not trust him. He would tear paper up, pee on the carpet, and chew on my rug. I only use the crate when I leave the house for long periods. I am starting to see the light out of the end of tunnel. I have to work on socializing him and accustoming him to loud sounds. He tries hard to be a good dog. I can teach him many things by cheering for him and singing to him (a dog that loves my singing :D). Just like children, every dog is different. My Shih Tzu was fully trained at nine months compared to my Yorkie, but he will get there. |
When I got Twinkle her breeder had already started crate training so it was an environment she was already familiar with. Her crate is in the kitchen because its the warmest room in our house and at night when I take her outside for her last potty she comes back in and goes straight to her crate and I shut the door. At 6am I let her out to potty and leave the crate open for the rest of the day. She wil go into the crate quite alot during the day to sleep, or sometimes take a toy in there to chew:D I'm going to continue with this because it's worked out well for us xxx xxx |
All of mine have their own crates with their beds inside. They sleep in them at night and when i leave the house. Yes i do close them in at night and when i leave the house for their own safety. My yorkies has free roam of the house. They only use crates for sleeping and when im away or when my grandchildren are here...better safe than sorry. |
Wrigley and Camden still sleep in their crates at night and love them! We had pads and bumper pads made, plus a custom cover and they have their own little palace! |

I do still depend on the crate often but he still pees in his crate. He did last night, but that was my fault. I gave him too much water before we went to bed and then I didn't wake up in time to let him out. |
I never have crated, I use either an xpen, or right now, am using a big cage with her bed, water and pee pad in it, and she will be in that until she's housebroken, and out of the chewing stage, then will be able to sleep in the family room at night with the other 3 dogs. It's more for her safety than anything else |

my beagle learned to do the same thing!! We bought her a new kennel and she hasnt learned how to "open" that one.. yet. All my dogs except for my little poodle sleep in crates, my poodle did too for a while but my hubby kept insisting that she sleep in the bed with us . My 2 older dogs have to sleep in thier crates cause for some reason when they are left out they use my house as their personal potty  even though both of them have been trained for years. All I say is "kennel" and they go running to thier little homes. :) My newest pup isnt completely house trained and to small to put in the bed with us so he is crated and is right next to my bed so I can hear him if he needs to potty. He will probably stay crated at night even he is older, sleeping with a constantly moving around hubby, a 4 pound dog that weighs as much as a german shepard does when she is sleeping and 2 cats is enough in the bed. ;) |
I used the crate only until Buddy was completely house broken at age 5 1/2 mo. Then he slept in his bed next to mine but I would wake up in the morning and find him next to me so that is where he sleeps now. I never used the crate for anything else. |
hiya mine still sleep in their crate at night (Benji is 4 and Holly is 2 )as soon as the television goes off of a night they both run for the door to go to bed .. even the cat sleeps with them some nights when its too cold to go roaming lol.. im sure he thinks hes a dog too LOL ;) |
Canyon always slept in his crate at night which is on my bed right next to me. In the last 2 weeks, we have given up the crate and he snuggles with me all night. |
4 months old I stopped using it! Mine don't like to get up at night for nothing. :) I am a mom who has to get them up and take them out in the morning. They will stay all warm and toasty in bed all day if I let them! haha And they don't pee the bed at all. |
Hey. Walker is 4 months old and crate trained. He "kennels up" when told and spends alot of his time during the day lounging in it and chewing stuff :) The door comes off ours so that he can't accidentally shut himself out while playing. At night its next to the bed and closed. He does fine. When my husband works overnight I'll occasionally let him sleep with me. It's like a treat. He will probably remain crate trained when we're gone for short periods of time or sleeping since when we return to the states, he will need to be in the cargo area in a crate and i want him to feel 100% safe in there. I think its a pretty personal decision though and what works for some doesn't work for others. |
They sleep with me once they learn not to potty on my king size bed. LOL Katy Lou (7 mo.) has slept with me since 5 months old. Sophie (4 mo. ) still sleeps in her kennel/crate next to my bed. I love sleeping with my dogs. |
Izzy will be two on 12/29 and she still uses her crate but not for sleeping at night because that girl is in our bed. But she uses it as her safe place to hang out when she can't crawl into our laps..lol. or when she just wants to rest and take a break she will sleep in it. I always have it open with her comfy bed and water bowl.:D Also if I'm going away for just an hour or two she goes in there. She is never left free in the house..not with those crazy cats of ours. |
