Clicker Training I started clicker training my 2 pups. I thought I would try it & am impressed. They love when they get their own clicker sessions & they only last 5 minutes at a time. Not doing a whole lot since they are only 8 weeks old. But both pups will touch your hand with their nose even running across the room & I only did 2 five minute sessions apiece with them. Right not I'm concentrating on the potty training. I think I have the pups all confused. When they were at my Mom's the pups went on pads. But when we separated the pups for weening, I had them all at my house & no one would go on the pad but all over my livingroom. So I would take them outside when they woke up & let them play alot outside. I think I have them really confused now that I just have my two. I would like to have them go in a litter box outside on the porch. Is it better to start in the house & move the box to the outside or just start them outside??? |
It's so neat that you are clicker training so early in their life. My dogs are all clicker trained and I must tell you it does come in handy sometimes. As for litterbox training. I would start from the beginning with the litterbox outside. Then you don't have to worry about confusing them again when you move it. |
Thanks for the advice. I'll have to work on it. I just found out there are Yorkie agility classes not too far away. When they get a little older, I am going to have to try it out. I could see how a target stick would come in handy in agility training. |
I meant to do clicker training.....but I kept putting it off. Now Sully is 1 year old....is that too late? |
im actually going to puppy class with Chicle using the clicker method... its really great he comes and looks and sits and stays on command i thought he was untrainable in that sense but hes a pro :) i love the clicker method and its so easy to phase out too ... he can follow commands w/o it too :)  i highly recommend this method of training |

After my pup was born, I visited everyday until I got her. I practiced the clicker training on the Mom - she's not quite 2 yr old. I taught her to crawl. She would get so excited when I brought out the clicker! I printed up some lessons from http://www.clickerlessons.com/lessons.html for my Mom to work with her pup. I bought a book for half price on the Internet but I thought the above was way more detailed in how to clickertrain (pictures & everything). You should check it out. You can buy clickers at Petco, Petsmart, etc. I ordered the i-click (softer click) online since mine were pups & the noise wouldn't scare them. They are so scared of everything at first. |
when you clicker train, do you click when they do something right or can you click it to let them know they are doing wrong? |
You click the second they do what you want. Then you give a treat. After they do want you want a few times you can add a hand signal or verbal command to it. Eventually you phase out the click & treating. Today I used the touch to have Hannah ring the Poochie Bell to go outside to potty. She did great. Spencer would do touch but to ring the bell he had to stand on his hind legs & he didn't want to do it. Will try again tomorrow. I want Hannah & Spencer to go in a litter box outside but they won't go in the litter box. But when they do, I'll be clicking. ;) If you go to the web site on a previous post & the first lesson is touch. It teaches you to clicker train while teaching the dog as well. It's more shaping them into doing what you want. The touch command is the easiest to learn! I took my Mom's dog to obedience school & when walking, if they pulled, we were to pull back & get them back in line. This training you reward when you have a loose leash. It is different. |
I also use the clicker and it is wonderful. |
We have just started clicker training with Magic...we are starting her in agility and the lady told us to go ahead and get her use to the clicker...so far she is doing great...we have worked with her twice a day for about 5 minutes...she loves it when she see the clicker and we have started learning the touch command!! I am so proud of her and can't wait for her to learn more... |
I wanted to clicker train charlie! but my mom's cockapoo is terrified of that clicking noise! HE is actually terrified of an noise, so maybe once i move out i will start with charlie. |
You should try the i-click clicker. The ones at the stores the click is really loud. But the i-click has a softer click. Dogs hearing is way better than ours & they don't need a loud click. Perfect for our lil furbabies. http://clickertraining.com/store/ & look for the i-click & see the pic. |

What do you guys use as a treat for clicker training? My Yorkie is 8 weeks old too. :D |
Ok, I BOUGHT A CLICKER! ...and started doing the click, treat, click, treat, thing last night. Sully HATES that noise! In fact I think I just taught him to hate treats! I clicked that dang thing once and he tucked his tail and flattened his ears and ran! Agh, what do I dooooooo? |
My little one was scared the first few times. Hold the clicker behind your back so the noise isn't so loud. I just got out of puppy training and the trainer said when u first start click and treat for no reason. Just to get them used to it. If they still don't like the noise after a few days get one that's not as loud. |
I read where you could try clicking a pen, or use a lid that makes a popping sound too like on a little juice bottle. You could also put some tape over the clicker & it will muffle the sound or put in your pocket. Novato ~ They suggest people food so the pups don't get bored with the treat. They can get bored with treats??? The book suggests hot dog pieces or cheese microwaved so it hardens up a little & they are good for a week. My one pup is lactose intolerant so forget the cheese treats. I bought Puperoni sticks. I slice them in thirds lengthwise with a pair of scissors. Then I snip into pieces. I don't have to worry if it's too old using the Puperoni sticks. You don't want a treat too big or you will have to stop training so they eat the treat. They also said some dogs aren't treat eaters & to use a toy then. But I don't know how you would do that without taking too long a time inbetween all the training with the clicker. |
Does anyone know how to train with a toy? She is awfully scared of the clicker and runs and hides. I thought maybe it was just attitude but I don't think so I think she is scared. It bothers me because she acts like she is scared of me. I have never so much as yelled at her. It really frustrates me when I put the treat in my hand (hotdogs) and she she turns and runs. |
I think there are also clickers with a softer click that is not so loud. |

I trained my boy to run behind the kitchen table and hide whenever he heard the clicker. It was so frustrating. But I started just by making a mouth noise and giving him a treat and then proceeding to a clicker on an ink pen and then to one of the new generation of quiet clickers and now I can use any clicker. It's funny, but he was the first one I tried it on and the others have never been afraid of it, I guess simply by having heard it and watching that nothing bad happened. CJ |

With these little dogs (especially the puppies), it gets to be a real challenge to give them treats without making them sick, getting them fat or having them lose interest because they're full. CJ |

I've had the same experience you're describing and I know you just need to hang in there. Once they get what you're trying to do, they love it. You need to click and throw the toy 20 times a day until she looks for the toy with happy anticipation instead of running away. She's not trying to make you feel bad, she just has it in her head that the hot dogs mean trouble. You can change her mind. Hang in there. CJ |

Here's another web site for clicker training. It even has an article of when your dog is afraid of the clicker. There are different articles showing different ways of training for the same command. It gives you lots of options. http://www.clickersolutions.com/articles/index.htm |
Hi Well a place to talk clicker were people do not think I am crazy. Yippy. Do you know how many groups for yorkies I have been in that think I am right out to lunch training in a gentle manner. If you can not alpha roll or make then do it then you know not that which you speck. To answer some of the questions. A pen click or a tongue click is ok for a click. Also a word yes or a made up word is better so it not said be accident, will work to but a click is better. A toy can be use a a reward my girl works for a ball and food but I tend not to click if using a ball I just toss it at the right move on her part. You can start any age of dog but the owner usually was a harder time not talking and luring. That be me as I am a cross over trainer working on fixing an aggressive dog that got hurt before I got her. :) |
Wow.. I totally forgot about that site! SO thank you for sharing! I finally got my clicker.. and at least my kiddies weren't scared of it.. they were SO fascinated by it.. i wish i would have seen that site earlier.. cause i was doing it all wrong.. at least they are interested in the sound.. i can't wait to whip them into clicker training tomorrow! :D |
How does it work?? Do you say a command & then click??? Any help would be very appreciated :) |
