runaway yorkie! Hi! I have a six month old Yorkie puppy and lately when I take him outside to use the restroom in the backyard he makes a mad dash down the drive to the street. Yesterday, I had to chase him down my street and one street over and was lucky to catch him. These little guys are so fast! Anyway, this really upsets me because I'm scared he will either get hit by a car or I won't be able to catch him. It seems to have gotten worse lately and any time I try to yell for him to come he darts the other direction. Any advice on getting your yorkies to come and prevent them from running away. He normally comes inside the house or when I call him from the backyard but lately he has been making these dashes and it almost impossible to catch him. I try to scold him and tell him "no" very harshly and have popped him on the nose. But, he continues to go on his mad dashes. :( |
Maybe an obedience class would help...but i think i would keep him on a leash when going outdoors. :) |
Get a large corral....I got mine from Walmart, go online to Walmart and look for site-to-store section ...It's great ..It has 6 interlocking panels (heavy plastic) for about $60 or check craigslist in your state or maybe garage sales, but it work great for my 3 when they are not allowed free run of the yard when it's dark ! We have an enclosed yard, but we also have wild animals in Az., so this keeps them near me at times !! |
You need to keep him on a leash at all times outside. Sorry but Yorkies are terriers - they have a prey drive and they will take off after a bird, squirrel, etc. You MUST keep him on a leash. Classes are great because you will learn how to communicate with him. You need to work on recalls. If you call him and then punish him, why would he come next time? You need to praise him when he comes and give him a treat even if he ran off or did something wrong. Classes are fun anyway, so I would definitely take one! |
I lost my little male yorkie this way. He ran into the street and was hit by a car. If you don't want your heart broken in two and your baby killed, please keep him on a leash. I learned the hard way and at the expense of my baby's life. RIP Peanut :( |
Mine have been taught come and stay and dont run off and I still dont trust them off leash. It is best to keep your baby safe and on a leash. No matter how trained they are they could become distracted |
I have to agree with the others - please use the leash. I lost my yorkie, Max in our front yard when I took him out to potty as he lunged for a coyote just a few feet away from me. The coyote just grabbed him and took off with him. I don't want anyone else to go through the heartbreak we did. Max always stayed with us outside, but even that did not matter when it came to a predator. Jackie |
keep him on a leash when going outdoors!! that is the best advice... If not sorry to say But I am afaid we'll be reading of your yorkie has been hit by a car or lost and I would hate to hear that. |
Agreed with the above - Keep your baby on a leash!! It doesn't have to be a 4 foot leash, I use a 5 to 6 foot leash whenever the girls go out the front door. ALWAYS!! By chasing him, he thinks he's playing a game & will keep going. |
Definatly a leash. The enclosed fence also works great. It only takes one time and they are gone. Never hit... use positive rewards for good behavior. I agree with all of the great advice given above. |
I have to agree with those saying keep him on a leash. I have two yorkies, one that's 5 and I've never let either off his leash. People say, they won't stay with you? He's not trained? -I say, to find out if he'd be good off leash, I would have to take the risk of him being lost. I'm just not willing to take that risk. |
Bettern than a leash, is a harness. That is what I use and it is much more humane since it does not choke them. DrMom |
When Bernie was little I put him on a short leash and hooked to my belt loops. I read somewhere it would teach them to stay by you. It worked! But you never know about these little guys...they can be unpredictable. I keep him on a leash antime he could wander into danger unexpectedly. |

A fenced in area or pen...or, a harness and leash is the only way..Please! for the safety of your baby..I have read too many stories lately about babies being hit by cars..it just breaks my heart:( Just to add..My Pixie has never been let off leash yet..I do not trust her enough and won\'t risk it..she has a large garden to run free in..but outside..she is on her leash! |
