Are Yorkies Stubborn With Training?? [F]My little Yorkie, Marley, is almost a year and a half. I live in an apartment and I feel I have been consistent in training him but he still doesnt get pee pads. I walk him twice a day (and he does good) but when I am in the house with him, he wont go to the pee pad by himself. Is this normal? Are yorkies just stubborn or is mine a little slow? Will I have to tell him to go potty every 30 min (and watch to make sure he does) for the rest of his life? Also, good news...I have been trying and trying to get him to "lay down" for almost a year now and last night he finally did it!!!! :) |
Yorkies are a bit hard to train. If he seems to rather go outside then maybe stick with that. Not all dogs like the pads when they like to go outside. I don't do the pads I train for outside. So sometimes I have to go out in monster rain storms because Zoey won't go on that pee pad I put for her to spare her the rain storm. |
Stubborn is the right word, but with loads of patience and love you can get there!!! Good luck with everything |
My Essie is the same way. I live in an apartment and for the time being (untill our house is finished in early September) I have to keep her hidden. So I can not take her outside to potty, She WILL NOT go on peepads. I have an x-pen set up now and she still WILL NOT go in the xpen, but as soon as I let her out of there she will run and find a place to go potty on my floor. I dont understand it. But when we go to my mothers house she potty's outside insted of in the house. |
Stubborn is exactly what they are!! My yorkie is almost three and I think she might be potty trained now almost perfectly. |
I'm too having a terrible time I have a 5mo old and he now is peeing on my daughters bed. He looks right at you while he's doing it.:( They are much harder to train then any other breed I have owned. I love him with all my heart,but it's not all the time that he does this. Everytime I think he's got it down,he goes in the house. Be patient. They are still babies and does take consitant,repetitive constant attention. My fourteen year old is home for the summer and in between her plans, I made her in charge of training him and I'll get her a PRIZE for training him,at the end of the summer. LOL .I hope she can do it. I also just found out my hours are being cut....so I too will have more time with him. Do your beast and by the way ....WELCOME TO YT!!!!!!:D |
I must have "special" yorkies, because I think both of mine are super easy to train. Taz was 10 mos old when I got him and he only knew sit and shake. (Occasionally) I started "clicker" training him and he picks things up really quickly. Now he sits, lays down, shakes, high five, rings the bell to go out (still working on that, but he now rings the bell himself), stay, sit up and now sit up and turn around. (Dance). Gabby is 14 mos old and really didn't know any commands. She now sits, lays down and stays. She is picking up quickly because of Taz though. |

Yorkies in general are just so stubborn! Trust me I know I have trained dogs and now just train specifically Yorkies and they are difficult to train. After trial and error I have pretty much have it down to a science now though and my Yorkies always go on their potty pad or in the yard when I walk them. It does take a bit of patience but every Yorkie will eventually cooperate and learn to use the right restroom areas with the proper training. A big YES for the stubborn part, I sent Chewy away for a month to a boarding training school and they just managed to teach him to lie down and not pull on the leash, all the other neat stuff he was supposed to learn never happened LOL - I guess he just decided to get back at me for sending him away. As for being house trained, they all are OK if we're home, but when they are left alone, it's everybody for himself - UGH...and where ever they please, sometimes it can be frustrating:mad: I then started with the belly bands when we got out and it's been much better, sure helped a lot:) |

It seems when they are smaller they are really easy and then you have to watch they will back slide and its harder. Its all worth it in the long run. |
