Teaching your yorkie tricks! So i've had my lil' Cookie for about 4 months now... i'm trying to teach her some tricks at home. So far, I have KINDA taught her how to sit and lay down. What are some neat tricks you have taught your lil' pup and how? I would like to learn how to teach her to beg or shake a paw but don't know how to go about doing so.... Thanks! |
Hot Rod knows the sit and down really well. I make him sit whenever I put on and take his leash off and for treats. Hot Rod knows how to crawl, just make sure Cookie is down and then just keep the treat in front of her and pull back slowly and say crawl. Hot Rod will exaggerate his paw movements sometimes and it looks like he is swimming. He knows his right and left paw but sometimes I may need to repeat which paw-I ask for both each time differently just to keep it fresh. I started to ask for the specific paw and then when I had it in my hand, I kept repeating which paw. Actually I'd taught one of my cats that also. Hubby taught him to speak. I think hubby barked at Hot Rod to get him to bark back and then told him that was speak...I'm not real sure how he did it. I do know that he uses a hand signal for speak and Hot Rod really does know what it means! We're in puppy school now and we are learning stay...he's doing pretty good. We've gotten so we can get up and walk away for about 30 seconds. I think I had him rolling over somewhat, but I haven't done anything with that in about a month so it will be starting from scratch with that. He's gotten a lot better at come (from puppy school) too--still needs some work. I really want to make sure that he knows that one! For me, I would teach him one thing and repeat it for about a week and then move on to the next thing for about a week, throwing in what he'd learn already a few times too. and so on and so on. Good Luck with Cookie! |
I started teaching Deucy words at a very young age. He listens so WELL to EVERYTHING I say...even when I'm on the phone. I can talk to him almost like a person and he knows most all of the words. I started out teaching him small words like "cow"..then I made the sound of a cow and showed him the cows in the pasture so he could associate sound with object. He knows my outside guard dogs' names though he rarely has contact with them unless I'm holding him. He knows the words, "no", "ok", "train", "puppy dog"...(for when we go to vet or town to look for them) "kitty","frog", "flower" "mow", eggs, treat, hungry, potty, poo, my people friends' names and many others. I have to be REAL careful NOT to mention a friend is coming by or he will go to every window watching and barking ..waiting for them to arrive. It's SO CUTE. He is SO smart. I just let him see the object, say the word several times and that is it. I also make the noise of a new word/object if we are in the car as he watches everything we pass. Association...it's all about association with objects for my baby. Good luck! Quote:

Zoe does dance which is easy to teach, you just hold the treat up and she figures it out and as she does it, I say the word dance. She also does bang bang. I point my finger at her and she lays down and rolls on her side like she's been shot :p and I taught that after teaching down (lay down) and then I'd hold the treat to the side and she'd roll to get it. Hope that makes sense. And right now we are doing roll over which she sometimes does and sometimes not, we're still working on that one. And we're also working on "give me five" and for that, I just picked up her paw the first couple of times and said give me five, good girl as I did it. She's very smart. Of course, she does the normal ones like sit and down and she does stay as well but that's another one that we are still working on. She seems to love to learn. :p |
The basic tricks or commands i learned myself,. liek sit and lay.. but when you go to puppy classes.. ( i do now with snickers) they learn the same.. they learn you stay, sit, lay, and you learn no HAHAHH I go on youtube sometimes to see what else i can learn. :) If you go to youtube there is apolish girl with a yorkie felix and she does really good with her yorkie., its also very fun to watch. she and felix are both very excited. go to youtube and search for videos: Felix yorkshire terrier you find all her videos. good luck. |
I have taught all my dogs tricks in vietnamese and english... Besides the basic tricks of sit, laydown, paw, beg, and roll over. Yoshi and MeiLing is also giving me high five(s)...it too cute... Kioko is learning how to give high five(s) also by copying MeiLing and Yoshi. Kandie she is the only one that can get on her knees and pray or beg. |
Well I don't know about beg, I've been wanting to teach Meeko that myself. I just can't figure out how to do. I tried holding treats just above him but he isn't going up. I can help you with shake tho, Meeko is a pro at it. Just show your baby a treat and then close your hand over it. It may take a lil bit, but your dog will eventually start to paw at your hand to try to get the treat. As soon as she starts pawing, mark her command. Wait untill shes pawing your hand fast, every single time and then start adding your word. It only took Meeko about 20 minutes until I added the word. You didn't ask about this trick, but I thought i'd add it anyway. Here's a thread I started a few weeks ago and someone asked how to teach Bang Bang (play dead) and I explained it. I hope the link words. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=123556 Good luck training!!! |
How old was your Yorkie when you started training? I want to start as early as possible but I don't want to be cruel by expecting too much of the puppy. I haven't gotten him yet but he'll only be 8 weeks old when I get him and I don't know if that's too early to expect him to learn to sit and stay and all of that. Anybody know? |
Hey, saschi. You can start training your puppy right away. Just keep the training sessions extremely short, maybe 3 minutes at a time. Keep them fun for your pup, and end on a good note. Your puppy will learn to love learning! |
Jackson's been very smart and good with tricks! Here's a thread I just made yesterday with a video http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...cks-video.html He's pretty good at doing bang bang, roll over (half roll over), sit, down, shake, high-five, stay, come. |
My daughter Nicole (in the avatar) taught Reesie most of the basic stuff and she's pretty good except at right and left. The thing she taught her that amazed me was how to whisper. She taught her speak, and then one day she said to me 'watch this'. She looked at Reesie and said 'Whisper'. And Reesie did a little huff-huff bark, real quiet. Don't know how she did it. |

This is a good thread! I'd like to learn new tricks for Bailey too! He only knows the basic commands or tricks. |
Oooh, I like Whisper! :) I'll have to try that. I'm a little afraid to try to teach Thor to Speak. |

I've had so much fun training my yorkie. He is sooo smart. At 8 weeks he learned to sit & lay with the help of a plastic clicker which I found at the petstore for about $3. Then gradually, as he would do movements I would attach a word to it and treat him. Like when he would lay his head down on his paw, I would say sleepy dog and treat him right away. Now at 11 months he is full of tricks and sometimes does a little trick combo routine which is too cute. Just to name a few: sit, stay, laydown, come, uppie, lets dance, high five (which is actually high ten), shake, leftie (shake with left hand), how are you (then he moans), bang bang, roll over, hello (and waves his hand over the hair in his eyes), and he just learned thank you last week (bow his head down toward the floor). He's easy to train because he knows he'll get a treat which is usually just dog food and lots of attention. |
Cash is two years old and while we didn't train much last year, this year we are working hard. He is even going to be doing agility this year. He knows: Sit, Lay down, Dance, Jump, Up and Down, Kiss, Watch Out! (roll over - his James Bond move), High Five, Stay, Out of the Kitchen, In and Out. He totally loves training and will do anything for cheese!! I am planning to teach him Bow, Shake, Yawn, Speak and many more this year. |
I just taught Eddie a fun one. He fetches a tissue out of the box when I sneeze. I started by rolling a tissue into a ball and tossing it for him while sneezing. He loves fetching a ball, so he picked that up pretty quick. I kept it up until he realized that a sneeze meant "go get it." Then I put the rolled up tissue on top of a box of tissues. Same thing. Finally, I stopped rolling it up and just had him grab a piece of tissue. He learned it real quick. I want to get to the point where we can put him in the middle of the room, and whoever sneezes gets the tissue. |
[QUOTE= Me also actually I just got him (BJ). He is very sweet but ofcourse very shy. One day I sat down with him and asked him to sit when I had a treat in my hand. Does anyone know if my baby is only going to respond to treats?!?!?!?!?! HELP ME!!!!! |
We got Sandy when he was almost 12 wks old. We taught him Sit and Down when he was 13 wks. We've had him for almost 2 months now and he has learned a several tricks. I was amazed because he learns fast. He knows Sit, Down, Shake (both left and right), Roll Over, High Five, 'Bring me the ball' (he'll go and fetch the ball), Let's go. I'm still trying to teach him to Stay but this is quite a challenging one. Sandy will do anything for his treats. Sometimes when I ask, 'Do you want your Piskoty (that's the brand name of the ladyfinger biscuits we've here)?' He'll come to me, jumps and sits still, he starts to go down and roll over before commands. Of course he doesn't get anything! He'll only get his treats if he follows the commands :p :D |
Bella knows a lot of tricks too. She knows, sit, high five, give paw, dance, roll over, sitty pretty, show me, and whisper. I feed the birds our of my kitchen window on to a neighbor's roof. She loves for you to pick her up to see the birds. She would scare them away by barking so I kept whispering to her and telling her to whisper so she didn't scare them. Now she makes that real growling sound, it's cute! I also taught Bella in one day how to ring bells on the doors when she wants to go outside. I too am looking for some new tricks to teach her. |
