Yorkie Obsessed with my wife . . . Hello, My family recently acquired an 8 month old yorkie. His past owner was a female with the same name as my wife. I wanted the dog and surprised the family. He is a great dog and we love him. Potty trained and everything. The problem is he will NOT leave my wife alone. He has been with us for 6 weeks and he follows her everywhere. Sleeps on her back, always under her legs when she cooks etc. etc. etc. She is flattered but needs a little less love as she needs some space. How can I get Teddy to spread the attention around and give my wife room to breathe? Paul |
Tough one! Sounds just like my Shadow (hence the name) :p He follows me everywhere, and always has. He's never had any interest in toys, or anything esle other than me, his Momma. All I can say is, she will learn to get used to it! It is so precious when all they want is to curl up and cuddle with you. I say, she's lucky. Good luck to you!! |
I have a male that is the same way and I haven't found a answer,maybe it is a male thing? However, mine will give my DH attention as well, but not to the extreme. Good luck and welcome to YT. |
hmm..sounds like my babies..my girls always sleep either on my laps or next to my head..they are my shadow!!! but i love it!! i can't get enough! |
Hi Paul, WELCOME to YT! It's been said that "One does not choose a Yorkie. A Yorkie chooses whom s/he will." Or, something to that affect! They tend to bond to one person, and can be quite territorial. When they give their heart, it's all the way. Though my Abigail will sit with hubby and allow him to pet her, she will not allow him to come near me if she's in my lap. We're working on that one, as she can not be Top Dog over dh. Sometimes, depending on her mood, she won't let him in bed without making her displeasure known. |
Good luck. I had a dog a few years back that started out like that and then started getting aggressive with my family and children when they came near me. Love is one thing but obsession is another. I ended up having to rehome him when he bit my son. |
Both my girls bonded with me rather than my husband when he was alive - he used to get a kick out the parade he got to see everytime I did anything in the house - I see some people saying females bond to males but haven't seen evidence of that in my own house LOL |
I would suggest that you get some treats and toys. Take him into another room away from your wife. Start playing with and training him to do simple commands, like sit, stay, etc. The more time you spend with him playing, the more likely he is to seek you out at times when your wife is busy. Ruby and Reno are my shadows too, but are perfectly happy when my husband is playing with them.:) Good luck! |

Welcome to YT!! I would suggest that you try to get some one-on-one time with Teddy - going for walks, giving him a special treat, perhaps training him to do a few tricks using a training treat. Best wishes. Would love to see a picture of Teddy. Thanks for adopting him & giving him a loving home. |
1 Attachment(s) Hi & Welcome to YT. It's a yorkie thing. Rocky is my shadow. If I sit down he's on me or next to me, right now he's laying on my arm on the desk. His momma, Maggie, is sitting on the couch, looking out of the window, waiting for her daddy's van to come around the corner so her day will be complete. She sits there from the time he leaves in the morning until he comes home. We've had her since she was 1 1/2 yrs old, now she's 7, and every day it's the same thing. Here's what I see of her every day. |
We adopted Punkin (female) at 8 months. I was not a huge dog lover, DH was. Punkin attached her self to me. I couldn't even kneel to clean out the lower kitchen cabinets as she would curl up on my legs sticking out behind me. It drove me crazy. It also drove DH crazy as he was sooo jealous. After a few months it all evened out and Punkin loves to be with us both equally. She also learned my habits and does not follow every step I take and she knows I will return to the room etc. I also got used to having something follow me, I don't even think about it anymore. When she is gone to the groomer's etc. I sure feel her absence though. |
In the Same Boat We got a male yorkie because I have two daughters and we thought a male would favor my husband and not us. Well, he does follow me everywhere and cries when I leave the room. He will sit on someone else's lap until I come in the room, and then he makes a beeline for my lap. It is cute, but can be a bit annoying. Our solution? Get another Yorkie. We got a female, Harley, in Dec. and now the situation is doubled!!! They both fight for placement on my lap. She usually wins because for some reason, Joey has let her be dominant. We got her to give him some companionship and although they do play quite a bit (sometimes it looks like a brawl), they both still bark when I leave the room and she escapes through the gate and finds me. Ugh! She's only been with us about 7 weeks so we'll have to see how it goes. My advice? Don't have any at this stage. Many I talked to who have 2 said it is soooo much better. Obviously they've forgotten that first "wonderful" year and didn't mention the low before the high. I'm still waiting for it... |
I call these kinds of problems "Problems of Abundance".:D Lucy is my velcro puppy and for me, I love it! :) I like the suggestion of training tricks as a way of bonding. I think I'm going to have Thomas try it... |
My bichon was this way until Gino came along, now they hang together. Maybe you need another for a friend for her? |
