I thought we were doing so good Max has been doing so good with pottying outside, or so I thought. He's had a few accidents but overall seemed to be holding it fairly well until let outside. Today as I walked back in the door I caught a urine smell. I started looking closer at the carpet (light beige color) and noticed several off colored spots. Seems he's using the carpet by the door to go potty between outside potty breaks. Not sure how long he's been doing this but there are about 5 or 6 spots on the carpet. I'll have to get out the carpet cleaner and hope I can get the smell out. I had been giving Max more freedom in the house because I thought he was doing so well but I guess it's back to strict crate training. This whole potty training stuff is getting really old. I hate to admit it but I'm really wishing I had got a different breed of dog.:( |

Well thanks God there is hope...even if it takes a year!! |
yeah i'd say morgan was 95% potty trained at 8 months and it just took a few more months to finally nail it. yorkies are a pain in the butt to train |
Hey Rose, I see you're in Mississippi too! Are you having trouble with your puppy as well? I'm so tired of all this! I have a friend that got a Shih-tzu/Poople mix last year and it didn't her dog long at all to become potty trained. My husband wanted to get a Schnauzer, but I had to have a Yorkie. I'm thinking if I'd of let him pick the dog out, I'd have a house trained puppy by now. (My signature says Max is 12 weeks old but he's actually 17 1/2 weeks old) |
Furgie is now 31/2 months and yeppers they are a B to train. So I heard. But I confused her by changing the rules in the beginning of the game. I am so sorry she was doing soooo good. Except she still thinks my living room rug is a big pee pee pad. Anyways I had a Schnauzer...in fact I have own two....it took them about 2-3 months to get it...so it takes awhile too. And I am home with mine. Whats worse to me is their urine odor....very strong! phew! |
Mississippi huh? I live close to Hattiesburg. Where are you? No need to tell exactly! |
I live in Raleigh. It's straight out Hwy 18 about 35 miles out of Brandon. I finally got Max staying in his crate all night without going potty in it. I had been keeping him in a play pen with a pee pad but didn't want to do that forever. I get up about 2:30 in the morning and let him out so he doesn't have to hold it all night. He'll still go potty in his crate though if he's in there longer than about an hour during the day. It's very aggravating. |
i remember many sleepless nights and getting up at 4 am to make sure she went out before i left for work! my dog is 13 months and only goes inside for spite! if we all leave together she will get mad and go inside. It is worth the trouble. I have so much fun with her now.. i totally forget how hard it was in the beginning! I graduated from MS College by the way. Grew up on the Coast;) |
Don't give up hope girls! They will get it in time!!!:animal36 |

I never got up and put any of mine to potty @ night....I clean it all up in the morning. Isn't that how they learn to hold it, cause they don't like being wet???? Think about it! |
awww Rachel we was about to buy a farm up there but changed our minds...so yes I know where it is at and I just love that little town!!! Maybe we can get together and have a play day.... if we could find a mid way meet play spot...LOL Quote:

As far as cleaning him up in the morning; I change so many diapers during the day, I try and keep the poo and pee clean up to as little of an amount as I can. :p I've got him going longer and longer though at night. I was getting up a couple times at first, now we're just down to one time and it's been around 3am the last several nights. We're working towards all night. |
It was about 3 months...a poultry farm. ewwww I know! It was so run down that we decided not to! He burnt the cabinets and wasn't willing to replace. So I said nah! Not for what he is asking. Quote:

Rachel I have a big blue crate I got at Wal-Mart and pee pads that I put inside it....here look at this picture. I fold them in half and place it in the back. She uses the pee pads most of the time...but lately she is out of her crate, unless I'm going out. Also I heard to neuter your boy before he starts hiking up his leg and he wont mark your house later...or spry the furniture. Best of luck with your little one. If I can help holler at me!! or someone here will help. |
One more thing what size is your pup going to be when grown? Furgie is going to be around 6 lbs...I was told on here. |
We live next to a chicken farm that is for sale! I don't think this is the one that you looked at though. It doesn't have a home on the land. According to the growth charts Max should be about 6 1/2 pounds full grown. But who really knows. He could be a 12 pounder when full grown! :) |
Yell I agree who knows!! I do know Furgie is growing bigger really fast! |
I don't know how much longer I can take it! Twice this morning, just minutes after being outside and peeing (I watched it come out, I know he went), Max has squated and peed wherever he happend to be at that moment. (Once in the kitchen and once in my bathroom) When I set out to get a puppy I knew there would be a potty training learning curve but I did not bargain for months and months of no progress. I guess I need to look in to a belly band? Is this the kind of situation they're designed for? He isn't marking teritory yet, he's just going potty. I hate to leave him in his crate all the time but that's what it's coming down to if he's going to pee every 5 minutes when he's out! |
I hope someone comes along to answers you Rachel, cause I have never used the bands before. In fact I never used pads before! LOL I'm not the one to help, one is enough for me at this point! Are you considering, re-homing? If you do I read that poodles are the 2nd smartest dogs in the world!!! You might want to consider one of them. Best wishes!! |
Oh and you might want to remove his water bowl and replace it every hour or so just to make sure he is getting enough. |
If Max is going at the door why don't you try one of those "potty door Bells" I think someone on here makes them. They hang on the door knob and your dog can jingle them when he's at the door to let you know he's ready to go out. I know a few people that swear by them! I think Chatties mom makes them? I know for sure you can order them from GW Little or In the Company of Dogs. GIve it a shot what can it hurt? |

Sometimes they do go a little backwards with the potty training if they get too much freedom too soon. And since you didn't catch it right away he thinks it's ok to "go" by the door now. I would definitely go back to the crate and watch him like a hawk while he's out of his crate. If you can catch him in the act, you'll be able to correct him right away and show him that this is not acceptible behavior. You'll see that it won't take long at all and he'll get back to only going outside. Don't give up, he'll get there. They're really smart dogs. Good luck:) |
So Right! Quote:
I don't wanna give mine up! And Rachel hasn't said that. It's just me, wondering? |
I don't want to rehome him, I just want him to go potty where he's supposed to. I can't continue to allow the carpet to get pee all over it so I'm going to have to try a different approach. He's spending most of today in his crate and I'm looking in to getting some belly bands. Until the belly bands come in he will just have to do a bunch of sleeping in his crate. Thankfully he isn't a screamer. Never has been. From the first night we got him he never screamed and whined at night or anytime he was put in his crate. Sometimes he'll do that breathy whimper when in his crate but that's as loud as he gets. I am lucky there! Thanks for everyone's input! |
Yell Furgie was not a screamer either...and Rachel...I hope I didn't insult you with asking if you were going to re-home...if I did that was not my intent. Have a good day and I hope you all have the Merriest of Holidays!!! |
Yep I too am going through the potty issues. Caji is 4 months old as of yesturday and is still having accidents but is doing better than earlier so some progress is being made. My other Yorkie took almost a year to train, and i did have a Schnauser once and it took just as long so they arent any better. Good Luck and be patient it will happen . Merry Christmas All Carole |
No offense taken at all Rose, don't worry. :) Hind sight is always 20/20 but I wish I would of just found an adult, already trained dog that needed a new home. But I didn't have any clue it would be this difficult so that's why I got a puppy. I've got so much on my plate as it is with two young children that I probably shouldn't of got a dog at all but I really wanted one. Oh well, just have to figure out how to make this as easy on me, and Max, as possible. |

The Yorkshire Terrier is # 27. Meaning" they get understanding of New Commands after about: 15 to 25 repetitions and Obey First Command: 70% of the time or better |
We are crate training Caji and it is working well. When he is out of the crate we only allow him two rooms in the house to run in and I monitor when he eats and needs out in the daytime. Yes it does keep you hopping but I am retired so gives me something to do, if I had small children I would certainely be run ragged with the Yorkie energy too. Our yorkie hardly ever makes a sound, occasional puppy whine when he wants somthing, has never barked yet either, he growls when he is in his crate fixing his bed, thats it. He is so quiet compared to our other yorkie. The one thing I have noticed though are his ears do not stay up, some days thier up and then down again, oh well he is just as cute with them down as up. We start puppy classes next month, that should be interesting, looking forward to it. Carole :aimeeyork |
