| agility training Hi, Just wondering if anyone here has put their yorkie into agility training or competitions? Seen it on tv and am curious. I think it might be good for training and to burn off some of Bea's energy but would like to hear if anyone has had any experience with this. |

| I haven't had any experience with it, but am interested. I think AlaskaYorkie has done some agility work with his dogs. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | At least a few of us here have done agility. Eddie, my 4-year-old, has been through Agility 2 and jumpers class. He did quite well and it was a blast, but he was afraid of the banging of the teeter in class. I decided it wasn't worth the trauma, so I pulled him out. We work on it for fun at home. Here's a vid of us goofing off in the backyard. And here's a vid of Dougal & Little's Dixie. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...g-agility.html

| I want to try agility with my yorkie, too. I've set up some little jumps in my backyard, but all Sapphire does is run around them. I do a good job jumping over them though.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Good work clearing those jumps! As for Saphire, lol, just start slow. The height isn't important starting out. Place the "jump" on the ground at first and get her used to it. Have her sit on one side of it, then call her to you. Reward with a treat and a lot of enthusiasm. Then, raise it up to 2" or 4" max. Same thing. Hold old is she, btw? Most agility schools don't recommend starting them on agility until they're a full year old. The pounding can be tough on their developing joints. Good luck!

| start I recently started doing a little at home training with Scooter. He is still a puppy but I think as he grows up, he will love it. He is really good at jumping through the hoop and we are working on the tunnel/chute. I figure baby steps are the best way to go. Maybe look into buying some at home equipment and see if your baby bonds with it. I have been using treats to train him to do everything so be sure to have them on hand if you do it.

| Its great for the dogs and best to start them as a puppy. I have a home set I bought and we are slowly getting all the furkids here used to it. The tunnel is a hoot, you have to see my husband trying to get them in it at one end while I stand at the other with the treat bag! He does not have a lot of patience. My Cavalier and Crested love it, but they are younger. My yorkies are older and its like they are saying "What, you want us to work for treats??? Think NOT!" |
