Grocery shopping with your Yorkie Hello, I live in Orangeville, Ontario. I have asked some people in my area about shopping with my Yorkie (in a carrier) and apparently lots of people do this at Zellers, WalMart, Drug stores and most non-food stores/restaurants. I wonder if this is because nobody noticed and didn't complain to management OR if it is okay. I would be interested in hearing from forum members about shopping with your pet in these kind of stores AND in particular, grocery stores. I'd be glad of any information, tips, etc. |
ive seen p eople carry smaller dogs and shop with them and of course onb loor they're welcome EVERYWHERE! however, at grocery store, its a little iffy however, my mom does sneak mickey in inside her coat when she goes to dominion "aka metro" to go to tim hortons which is just at the entrance and i have taken mickey on a leash inside the same dominion to the bank machine which is next to tim hortons and no one has said anything. i guess this is because its really far from food but if your dog's in a carrier i don't think people will even notice that the dog's in there lol |
Grocery shopping with your Yorkie Jennsy, thank you for your response, I may try it. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ons/icon12.gif BES |
onb loor . Could I ask for a translation? I know lol and lmao, but now onb loor. Thanks! |

hehe sorry thats a typo supposed to read on bloor its like a street where they have all the designer boutiques, like high end... like 5th ave in nyc |
I tried to carry Penny into Walmart to size a harness for her...and the greeter told me No....You can't bring a dog in here.... |
Walmart sells food so they're not supposed to let any animals other than service animals in per health board regulations. Sometimes you can "get away" with taking them in in full view but that's only because the ones watching the door and maybe the surveillance never gave their policy manual a good read through :p |
As for sizing the harness, you can always just buy it first and return it later if it doesn't fit. That's why for places selling pet supplies that don't allow your pets inside (at least not "openly" so), make sure they have a liberal return policy. |
not the case for me when i was walking into walmart with bella in her bag, i was stopped at the door by the greeter!! |
When KiKi was very little...I took her to Walmart all the time...but I was asked to leave once...I do take her to Home Depot....Rona..and they don't say anything. I have taken her to the mall in my coat too!!! |
Personally, I think its inappropriate to bring animals near food or stores in general. I know we love our animals, but we are forcing our love on others. I see it like someone bringing a crying baby to church or the movie theater, etc. Its just not being considerate of others. There is a time and place for our pets, even if they are in carriers and if it feels like its bending the rules, then its probably not the right thing to do. Just my opinion. I'm not passing judgement on anyone else. |
When Odie was a baby I brought him Everywhere I went! I mean everywhere. He was in resturants, stores etc. He was too small to leave at home alone so I took him everywhere I went. (When I got him he was 8 oz so he was just too little to be left home alone.) Now he is much bigger and older, he is now 1 year old so he is old enough to be left alone and I don't bring him everywhere with me. I do still take him to Petsmart and other petstores but otherwise I don't take him into stores with me. :aimeeyork |
i have a really good under cover bag and no one can see Romeo. I take him to most stores. We went to Trader Joe's yesterday. I know I shouldn't , but I don't think it's any worse than bringing some stinky fingered little kid with a runny nose. lol.. |
I've brought Beatrice almost everywhere, anywhere that I'm not quite sure of ,I just keep the bag closed. She's very well behaved, she never makes a peep !We even taken her into restaurants, with the bag closed [of course] I've taken her into the Bay, and the Eaton's Center, the I.G.A grocery store,Pharmaprix. I take her on the metro[subway] and the buses and as long as I keep her bag closed ,they don't mind.I've even taken her to work with me one day,I had to go in at an odd time to do a client ,so I brought her with me.She just stayed on my coat on the floor beside me.:p |
We always took our Yorkie to Menard's, but now that they are selling groceries, we were told that she can no longer come in. We were met at the door and told to take her out. Of course you can always sneak anything into anywhere, but a place that sells food seems to be the one place that it is not acceptable. |

Well, imagion this. Im not a small guy. I am 6foot4 shaved head, just a big guy who is a teddy bear. I take Tito everywhere with me. I have be asked to leave a shopping mall, wal mart, LCBO (liquor store) and dollar-rama But not out of Home depot, doctors office, movie theater and future shop I dont take him to places with food. I respect that but some places and some people are just to picky. If I was a female I do not think I would have been asked to leave some places. |
I live in Brampton and I tried taking Lucky in Walmart and the Greeter said I had to leave! I would love to take my baby shopping with me but I don't even try anymore, unless it's the pet store...I kinda take it personal when someone says that thay don't allow dogs in the store!!! Grrrrr I have seen some pretty dirty habits with kids.... our babies have better manners!! :) |
nobody lets me in any stores with mine either I can take him to homedepot & the hairdresser that's about it oh, & the bank manager loves him |
I'm new to YT and I just found the Ontario section. :) I live in Ottawa and I take Saphira everywhere with me...I don't think I have ever left her at home. She sits in my purse and sleeps the whole time we're out...until she gets nosy and sticks her little button nose out the top :) :) I've never had a problem. |
so far I can only get mine into Home Depot, Canadian Tire, & the banks |

In Halifax, we actually have a few sites that list pet friendly places. When you walk down Spring Garden Rd. most places that allow pets have water bowls at their doors (mind you it's probably not the best idea to utilize them) but it's a sign that you're pooch is allowed there. Like I had to pick up an order at Lululemon and I thought Harley wouldn't be allowed, so I put him in his purse. When I got there they all wanted to see him, and they had water and treats. If it has a no pets sign i respect it, however I do have a special purse to hide him in. I've sneaked him into a few government offices too... |
In just my opinion - wherever food is sold (grocery stores) I wouldn't try to sneak or just walk in - they have health regulations some restaurants are pet friendly but as far as grocery shopping I wouldn't do it - I doubt anything would happen legal wise but they normally don't allow any pets in stores that sell food - I'm talking about the big stores - Kroger - Randalls etc It's fun to take them everywhere but also - you don't want to be asked to leave if you've already made the trip......I took my Chanel to Walgreens when she was a baby and they loved her but I was surprised they didn't ask me to leave since they sell food too - at that time it never crossed my mind I was going against regs - she was so small that I guess that's why I got away with it :) |

I travel with Harley a lot, and last time I went home (we don't have AC in our car) I had to stop several times to cool off Harley. I was surprised the major Big Stops (gas station with resturant and gift shop) allowed me to bring him into the bathroom with me. I think in certain situations they are very respecting... They also hauled out a box of treats. So I think in the summer it's ok. Because no matter what, you CANNOT leave him in the car. |

Theives have even broken into pet stores and targeted only expensive dogs - To share a story - I was walking my 2 a few weeks ago and someone started asking me all sorts of questions about mine - cost was the main question and I downplayed everything and said they were senior dogs lol - then walked a totally different direction so they couldn't see where I lived. It was a bit unsettling |

That is so unsettling and scarey and hell. My boyfriend is from Ottawa, and he's paranoid about that too. In Halifax I've never heard of it, but I'm sure it happens. What do theifs do about a micro chipped dog. (the thought just scares me). If people ask me about my guy, I don't share price, I always just tell them about the wonderful breeder i got him from. Most of the time the people actually call the breeder and buy one. I've been lucky. I never let the little guy out of my sight... but we gave notice to our appartment and they've been showing it. That scares the crap out of me. becuase they have the right to show without telling us. I'm worried either someone will come break in, or they'll lose him, and I'll never get him back. (I've set up his room, so there should be absolutely no reason to move his gate, or touch the dog as a precautionary measure) but the people in our building are really inconsiderate. |

QUOTE] So Just heard it happens... So sad, I just heard on the radio, a women reporting her Yorkie missing, she saw someone at the end of her driveway pick it up and take it.... There are some horrible people out there... I can't believe they took it from her own property. it was on the local radio all weekend. |
OMG! NOW im kind of scared! i wont take bella with me anymore! I have had to leave her in the car while i go to a store to buy something i forgor but now that you say that. I wont take her with me anymore unless im going to a pet store or something... I really neever thought of someone stealing you dog but true true true.. there are all kind of crazy people out there. And about stores, i have taken bella to the mall once, and nobody said anything. Maybe I was just lucky but i have seen people with their dogs inside stores. Also, i took her to the post office because what would you do when you are walking your dog and then you gotta go to that store and sneak your little one. And another place where i really sneak inside a bad was at subway.. i just went inside to order and ate outside.. and she was inside her carrier and nobody noticed. Now that i remember one teacher in my college has her dog in her office. and everybody seems to like him and they dont say anything! |
