You are soooooo incredibly right! I want to publicly apologize for my ignorance! I was busy online all night trying to educate myself! Well, first of all, I was misinformed! I do understand that there are different dialects within the spanish language.....A friend of mine suggested the name Oni to me...He's cuban...
I am sooooooooo sorry! When I mentioned to quite a few Mexican spanish speakers about the word "Oni", they all would ask me did a native spanish speaker tell me this..I of course said yes, (since spanish is not my native language), and also shared that my friend was Cuban, the response was "Go figure or that figure".... So, I do also understand that there is conflict with Spanish speakers who are not Mexican not wanting to ever be mixed up nor confused with being Mexican for it's insulting....Well, I have no idea since I am not of those ethnic groups of people nor a spanish speaker...
It's clear that there is a large population of Mexicans in California so therefore that's why I made the reference....I am however not in any shape, nor form racist! Again, I do humbly apologize for my being misinformed! Oni, by the way is "honey" in Yoruba! Which in fact is an African word!

okay i understand why you said that and i accept the apology. its just soo fustrating being put in a catagory your not it happenes to me every day my mom is black hispanic (peruvian, puerto rican, and african american and a pinch of mexican from the greatgrand parents) and my dad is white so i hate it when people automaticaly say them mexicans because in reality im black white hispanic not mexican there is nothing wrong with being mexican my fiance is but to be catagorized like that imediatly is quite fustrating but i want to thank you sooo much to your public apology it ment alot to me and coco (who understands spainish lmao)

Hey girly....Somehow I think you misunderstood... I never categorized anyone! I have always been careful about that! I do not assume one's ethnicity! I'd ask... In the case of trying to get clarification of the translation, of the spanish speaking people I asked, they were in fact Mexican...I know not much about Mexicans....I met a girl from Guatemala-We then got into the conversation of her ethnicity and she explained to me that everyone who is not Mexican HATES to be referred to as Mexican! It obvious that people of the spanish/latin/hispanic/ whatever they are referred, has issues regarding who's better! This is really sad to me... But since I've been in Southern California, not long, as I am a South Beach Babe, MIAMI, it seems that the issue of the day is in fact about Mexicans.. That's why I made the reference about the majority of the population in CA were Mexican... I was not categorizing anyone! I was speaking specifically! Being from the East Coast, the issue of the day is not about Mexicans, Mexico, the boarder and all these issues that seems to be a daily conversation around here! But nevertheless, the word Oni is Yoruba anyway! African! So I am glad for the clarification for myself, and once again, my most sincere apologies for the mix-up....
P.S. And as far as always being assumed "Mexican", I'm sure it's because you live in California! Trust me, step outside of California and I bet you a million dollars you won't hear that! Noone is remotely thinking about Mexicans outside of the states that border Mexico! And I am not saying this in an offensive way! But it's true!
