want a yorkie! Hi everyone, Okay I can't wait any longer ... I really really really want to get a Yorkie! Today I went to a pet shop and got to hold/play with a little Yorkie for the first time. I didn't want to leave. I seriously fell in love!! I'm located in Southern California (Los Angeles-South Bay). Can someone recommend a good breeder? Do you know of any new litters? Price is an option ... I know Yorkies cost more in CA, but I am still paying off some school loans and cannot afford a super expensive Yorkie. The one at the pet shop was $1800 ... it was originally $2200, but the manager was willing to give us a "discount." Any comments/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |
I have one if you are still interested I have two males for sale if you are still interested. My email address is KylaWilson@AOL.com. I live in San Diego. I am selling them for 1300 each. They are registered and weigh less than 4 lbs. I have plenty of pictures of them and the parents. |
Maybe I am alone in thinking this - but I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER buy a puppy from a pet store. More than likely that cute little doggy you played with was either from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. Just do a google search on puppy mills or pet store puppies, and you will be astounded. Buying a pup from a pet store only supports these mills or irresponsible breeders. A reputable breeder would never take their puppies to be sold at a pet store, they rely heavily on word-of-mouth and referrals. Just tryin to help you out, not trying to flame! |
Please dont buy from a pet shop, and good luck with you search for a good breeder. |
ohh, that is how i fell in love with yorkies. i saw one at a pet shop, but i didn't buy it good choice not to buy it !!!! good luck with your search! |
OH NO NOT A PET STORE ;o( 3 Attachment(s) Jenn ,there must be some good breeders in your area? Maybe try breeders.net and look in your area or even alittle away from you county. Must be a breeder near you with lower prices and better breeding than pet shop. I have a boy aval who is half that price and he is a healthy and happy little one. Best of luck to you ;o) |
I know that most people on this forum are against pet stores, and would prefer purchasing from a breeder. HOWEVER, w/ that said...currently...there is only one pet store (in South Bay) that I am impressed enough with that IF I were in the market for a puppy, I would consider purchasing from them. We Love Pets 815 Manhattan Ave (310) 372-1212 They are located in Manhattan Beach. They ONLY have 5 - 6 dogs maximum at a given time. They always clean up after the puppies pee/poop. They request that anyone that wants to touch the animals use hand sanitizer. And it ALWAYS smells clean in there. No wet dog or funky animal smells. The staff there is friendly and aren't trying to forceably sell you a puppy. Information on the puppies are posted on little cards. There are no hidden cages in the back or anything. Only 5 - 6 puppies at a time. My dogs are both not from pet stores (but from breeders), but this is the ONLY location that has impressed me enough for me to consider purchasing anything from them. (And yes, I have been to a few pet stores in the LA area, and this is the only one I would consider. All others usually are not clean, have cages of animals in the back, etc.) |

Absoulutly do NOT buy from a pet store! They get their dogs from puppy mills, if you don't know what they are look at some of the above links. It doesn't matter how nice they look in the store, all that matters is where they got them. Most doggies from pet stores are sick, and sadly, some don't make it. I have a personal expierance, and please listen to me when i say do NOT buy from any pet store that sells dogs! good luck on your search, the perfect baby for you is out there somewhere!! :D |
I worked as a groomer at a swank pet store Please Do not buy a puppie from a pet stored they buy from Huntington for the most part most have Kennel cough or worse..... Mange that wont show up for a while bad hips elbows eyes ect and all say they give you a year Gur ... but only if within 24 hrs if you go to there vet .. can i tell you about how many tearful people came in saying how there 2200 dollar puppie died in a week and the sweet smiles and no care i saw as they showed the disclamer in the one year contract ... ()*^&)&*)M#R@#$ is what i call pet stores ... i would rather go on Welfare than work for the ^%#$^%#$ Ugly is easy to cover short term but long term is what matters |
Just to be devil's advocate here... It's funny how people are quick to declare "Don't buy from a pet store", as a blanket statement that all pet stores must be bad. People have never visited the specific pet store I mentioned, but are quick to make a comment. And no one here has any idea how the store makes most of it's revenue, whether it is from the selling of products at the retail level (collars, shirts, bed, food), or wholesale distribution, or the actual selling of puppies. The cards that are placed alongside every puppy, includes the breeder's name and basic contact info. Not every "pet store" has to be bad and must be buying from a puppy mill. Comment as you wish, but I just find it incredibly judgemental for people to ASSUME that ALL pet stores are inherently bad. I have spoken w/ the staff/owners of this pet store, and PERSONALLY, I'm quite pleased w/ the information I was told. You don't have to purchase from the specific pet store that I mentioned. But I'm quite confident that the store mentioned does not purchase from a puppy mill. I know of another that does, and that is why they don't get my business. _jenn - Good luck on your search for a puppy. |
DomLee - no disrespect but i think its better to be safe than sorry. the pet store we got Bandit from gave us little cards with the breeder's name and information. It was actually CALLED American Breeders Association. We were very pleased with every thing they were telling us too. They seemed very knowledgeable (sp?) There weren't many dogs there, the place was clean, and it didnt smell bad. After Bandit died of Liver Shunt we did more investigation and found out that they do indeed get their dogs from puppy mills. that would be when they became nasty and told us it was OUR fault that Bandit died. and it took over a month for them to refund the money. So like i said before, better to be safe than sorry. JMHO. :) |
I respect your comments. No disrespect at all. Even SoCalyorkiLvr makes mention that not all pet stores are inherently bad in this thread. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...38&postcount=6 I understand that a lot of pet stores source their puppies from puppy mills, but it doesn't mean that all of them do this. I just got tired of seeing people assume that all pet stores were the same; getting their puppies from mills. |
domelee--I think you work for this said pet store. Obviously!!!! |

In other words, I don't "ASSUME" that all pet stores are the same, because the majority of them ARE. Believe me, or don't believe me - I really don't care. |
http://hattrick-dals.home.att.net/10Reasons.html maybe they are puppy mill dogs most likely maybe they aren't but personally after all i have learned i would NOT even take a chance with a pet store puppy at all maybe because i just don't have extra money lying around to gamble with like that good luck finding a yorkie baby! |
I life in SouthBay area. I have the same problem with you when I first looking for yorkie. I decided to get my yorkie from this breeder and I am very happy with her and my yorkie. http://www.heavensgiftskennel.com/ If you are interested you can PM me and I will be willing to give more info. Please do NOT buy from petstore. |
Be an informed buyer Kennels are just as bad. They keep them in those tiny cages all the time. It is best to buy from a breeder who has been doing it a long time, and knows their lines and breeds Yorkies ONLY!! And watch to make sure they dont have to many. Yorkies need lots of attention, if they have too many they are obviously being neglected. And always go to the premises to make sure you agree with their living conditions. You only want to support GOOD BREEDERS. Good Luck!! |
I got my Tilula on puppyfind.com only $5.99 & they have alot of hobby breeders that really care about there pets & breed for the love of the breed. :aimeeyork |
Quote:
5.99 Are you serious like 5 dollars and 99 cents.   What a deal. Or are you talking about the fee you had to pay to see the breeder info. |
wow 5.99 i want to get one for that price please lol |
let me rephrase It will cost you $5.99 to look around. But they have alot of great dogs in differerent price ranges. And the more expensive doesnt mean better. I got my girl at a resonable price. There was lower & high priced but she was the perfect dog for me at a good fair price. :aimeeyork $5.99 for a yorkie, get in line -right? lol lol lol |
AND HOW DO U KNOW THE PUP WAS NOT 1800 TO BEGIN WITH AND THEY JUST WANT TO MAKE IT AS IF IT WAS 2200 And u are lucky to get the "managers discount" so really it is true most places get their dogs from a puppy mill so do ur research and it is best that u knowwhere ur doggies are coming from who is rasing them, what they eat were they sleep what they drink, where they play, ect, and if you can and get a puppy in california, from a breeder go and visit the breeder make sure u get to know where ur baby is coming from, so please do ur research or else it will cost u ive seen it here on yt hope u get one soon! |

maybe someone should put you in a cage your whole life, maybe then you'll think about it. If you are potty training your puppy, it is okay. and only for a couple hours at a time at most. leaving your dog in a crate all day long while you are at work is animal cruelty! plan and simple. If you have so many animals where you feel like you have to cage them, then you should not have that many animals. PERIOD! I think someone should report this kennel to the ASPCA!!! Yorkies are under attact by greedy people who only care about getting money!!!! Help give them a voice against this kind of cruelty! |
Great thing that you want to get a yorkie! They are the most amazing and loving companions that one can dream of! I do commend you on Not buying the puppy that you fell in love with at the "pet store" though. The majority of all pet store puppies do come from all ranges of puppy mills (from backyard breeders to $$$ corporations) and I am sure you would not want to take a chance that your loving companion could have been massed breed and could possibly develop negative traits/health defects in the years to come, an unnecessary heartbreak... Are you nearby San Francisco? I met a wonderful breeder there that I can recommend to you if you want Remember, the best type of consumer is an Informed consumer! |
