| want a yorkie! Hi everyone, Okay I can't wait any longer ... I really really really want to get a Yorkie! Today I went to a pet shop and got to hold/play with a little Yorkie for the first time. I didn't want to leave. I seriously fell in love!! I'm located in Southern California (Los Angeles-South Bay). Can someone recommend a good breeder? Do you know of any new litters? Price is an option ... I know Yorkies cost more in CA, but I am still paying off some school loans and cannot afford a super expensive Yorkie. The one at the pet shop was $1800 ... it was originally $2200, but the manager was willing to give us a "discount." Any comments/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

| Maybe I am alone in thinking this - but I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER buy a puppy from a pet store. More than likely that cute little doggy you played with was either from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. Just do a google search on puppy mills or pet store puppies, and you will be astounded. Buying a pup from a pet store only supports these mills or irresponsible breeders. A reputable breeder would never take their puppies to be sold at a pet store, they rely heavily on word-of-mouth and referrals. Just tryin to help you out, not trying to flame!

| OH NO NOT A PET STORE ;o( Jenn ,there must be some good breeders in your area? Maybe try breeders.net and look in your area or even alittle away from you county. Must be a breeder near you with lower prices and better breeding than pet shop. I have a boy aval who is half that price and he is a healthy and happy little one. Best of luck to you ;o) |

| I know that most people on this forum are against pet stores, and would prefer purchasing from a breeder. HOWEVER, w/ that said...currently...there is only one pet store (in South Bay) that I am impressed enough with that IF I were in the market for a puppy, I would consider purchasing from them. We Love Pets 815 Manhattan Ave (310) 372-1212 They are located in Manhattan Beach. They ONLY have 5 - 6 dogs maximum at a given time. They always clean up after the puppies pee/poop. They request that anyone that wants to touch the animals use hand sanitizer. And it ALWAYS smells clean in there. No wet dog or funky animal smells. The staff there is friendly and aren't trying to forceably sell you a puppy. Information on the puppies are posted on little cards. There are no hidden cages in the back or anything. Only 5 - 6 puppies at a time. My dogs are both not from pet stores (but from breeders), but this is the ONLY location that has impressed me enough for me to consider purchasing anything from them. (And yes, I have been to a few pet stores in the LA area, and this is the only one I would consider. All others usually are not clean, have cages of animals in the back, etc.) |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | Absoulutly do NOT buy from a pet store! They get their dogs from puppy mills, if you don't know what they are look at some of the above links. It doesn't matter how nice they look in the store, all that matters is where they got them. Most doggies from pet stores are sick, and sadly, some don't make it. I have a personal expierance, and please listen to me when i say do NOT buy from any pet store that sells dogs! good luck on your search, the perfect baby for you is out there somewhere!!

| Just to be devil's advocate here... It's funny how people are quick to declare "Don't buy from a pet store", as a blanket statement that all pet stores must be bad. People have never visited the specific pet store I mentioned, but are quick to make a comment. And no one here has any idea how the store makes most of it's revenue, whether it is from the selling of products at the retail level (collars, shirts, bed, food), or wholesale distribution, or the actual selling of puppies. The cards that are placed alongside every puppy, includes the breeder's name and basic contact info. Not every "pet store" has to be bad and must be buying from a puppy mill. Comment as you wish, but I just find it incredibly judgemental for people to ASSUME that ALL pet stores are inherently bad. I have spoken w/ the staff/owners of this pet store, and PERSONALLY, I'm quite pleased w/ the information I was told. You don't have to purchase from the specific pet store that I mentioned. But I'm quite confident that the store mentioned does not purchase from a puppy mill. I know of another that does, and that is why they don't get my business. _jenn - Good luck on your search for a puppy. |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | DomLee - no disrespect but i think its better to be safe than sorry. the pet store we got Bandit from gave us little cards with the breeder's name and information. It was actually CALLED American Breeders Association. We were very pleased with every thing they were telling us too. They seemed very knowledgeable (sp?) There weren't many dogs there, the place was clean, and it didnt smell bad. After Bandit died of Liver Shunt we did more investigation and found out that they do indeed get their dogs from puppy mills. that would be when they became nasty and told us it was OUR fault that Bandit died. and it took over a month for them to refund the money. So like i said before, better to be safe than sorry. JMHO.

| I respect your comments. No disrespect at all. Even SoCalyorkiLvr makes mention that not all pet stores are inherently bad in this thread. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...38&postcount=6 I understand that a lot of pet stores source their puppies from puppy mills, but it doesn't mean that all of them do this. I just got tired of seeing people assume that all pet stores were the same; getting their puppies from mills. |
