Default [/B]Birth Weight and Adult Weight

Hi,
I was just curious if the birth weight determines the size of a yorkie as an adult. My friend called a breeder once inquiring about a yorkie and the breeder said that the female she was interested was going to be very tiny since she only weigh 3oz, she predicted that it would be under 3lbs.
Is that true?
How much do they usually weigh at birth?
I never asked the breeders that sold me mine so I wouldn't know how much mine weighed.

Default weight

I just does not work that way..too many factors come into play. You can no more determine adult weight in a dog by birth weight then you can by looking a human baby and predicting adult size.
3 TO 4 OZ IS A NORMAL SIZE Yorkie birth weight...a really tiny is 1 or 2 ox...but I have had those grow up to be nice size Yorkies. 5 or 6 pounders.

http://yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm - this is a growth chart someone sent me. I have also heard you can triple their weight at 8 weeks and double at 12 weeks. But as Pat said, it is only a guideline.

With humans, they say their height on 2nd birthday - double for adult height?????

My puppies are one week tomorrow, they were 4, 4, 5, 6, 6 oz at birth and 3 have added 4 oz. One 6 oz gained 4.5, and one 4 oz has only gained one, so then what?

I have ask are vet several times if she could tell how much or how big they would be when there full grown she has told me its hard to tell like she said so much to consider its really hard to say. I had a girl that was in between so we thought she might be perfict for breading well she turned out to be 3lbs. So you never know.I sold one to a lady and figured him to be around 4 or 5lbs when he ws ful grown acording to the charts adn all and he ended up only being 3lbs. And I was going by the charts. so who nows? I think everyone has there way of trying to guess.

the chart I've posted is "just a gauge" as they grow many factors play a part of their weight gain...

Free feeding tends to pack on weight (which is my preference) or regular daily 2-3 feedings tends to keep them trim. Treats and people food will add abnormal weight.

I free feed all my animals even the babies once on to dry baby food so mine tend to lose weight once they leave to their forever homes.

Default Hello

hi all im a first time mommy, i got my yorkie a month ago and yesterday he turned 4 months and is currently weighing 4lbs.
i was just wondering if this is a normal weight for my doggie. he's supposedly a "toy" and was told that he would mature with a weight of 6-7lbs. but wehn i went to the vet she told me that he will mature to be 11 to 12 lbs! I know its hard to tell or forsee their mature weight but is this poss?

Default size

Do you remember his 12 week weight...if he was 3 to 3 1/2 pounds at that time, he will not be much more then 6 to 7 pds...maybe a pound more, but not 12.
Alot depends on his frame, neutered??, overeats..anyone can take a 7 pounder and feed them cookies until they weigh 12..

First, a vet is probably the last person to ask for that kind of info. They will tell you, as they should, that with a young puppy, you pays your money and takes your chances. ALL Yorkies are in the class of dogs called by AKC as TOYS. So, no matter how large or small a purebred Yorkie is, it should be still designated as a "TOY".. Other terms such as mini, t-cup, standard when related to size, are marketing phrases. So, the standard of to 7 lbs as adult and classified as TOY are really the only proper phrases. I know you will love your baby no matter the size but when a buyer is given false info, it makes for some misdealings..

thank you so much for returning my post. he was 2.7 lbs when i got him maybe an oz. or so less. hes not neutered yet. im waiting for him to reach his 6months. i dont feed him any ppl food except for 1Tbs of gerber chicken and rice baby food mixed with his kibble, 3 times a day. do you recommend i do some changes in his diet? maybe eliminate the baby food? even though he loves it so ???? :-\

I completely understand what your saying. and unfortunately i did get my lil one from a not so trust worthy person.... i got him from a kennel, but the guy swore up and down that all his dogs are home bred. he told me to go to the vet 10 -14 days after i got my baby to get the rest of his shots. i waited 3 days and i decided to just go to the vet anyway just for a check up. my baby had a nasty cough and the vet diagnosised him with kennel cough. when i called the "breeder" it went to vmail and he hasnt returned my phone calls since then. the vet gave me some meds for him but his cough is still there so now the vet is wondering if its possible a collapsed trachea. we havent officially diagnosised it as of yet we are waiting to see how he reacts to the meds.
i know, everyone must be wondering WTF,going through all of this at such and early stage but i guess these are the horrors from buying from a bad "breeder" but i look at it as a blessing for my baby b/c now hes getting treatment he needs, which i know he wouldnt have gotten from his original place.

if anyone can give me more info on raising a yorkie with a collapsed trachea?
