Avoiding the mating process?? I have a male and a female Yorkie, the female just gave birth on 2/07 and now the male is trying to mount again. I do not want her to get pregant again, because I think it's too soon (4 months). My boyfriend does not want me to lock either dog up because he feels that they will be miserable, since they have full range of the house right now. Besides, he thinks that nature will take it's course and if it's meant for her to get pregnant, she will know, if not then she will not let him mount her. Can someone give me some advice please?

OMG, i can't believe anyone has the thinking your boyfriend has about it being meant to be or not. . if that were the case, dogs would have litters every heat. first thing you know, your girl will be bred to death. if you love your girl you will separate them and not let this happen out of the ignorance of your boyfriend. sorry to be so blunt. i don't mean your boyfriend is ignorant . he seems to have a lot to learn about dogs. i hope he doesn't feel the same way about humans. the only sure way to prevent it is to keep them separate when her 'standing' days are here. don't depend on belly bands, diapers or anything else. Even crates aren't foolproof as she will back right up to it to let him get her.

If nature has her way, the girl will be pregnant. During heat, the male will hardly leave her alone, then when she is ready.. she'll let anydog mate with her. It's your job to look out for her, it'll be worth it. A little inconvenience for the dogs will prove to be healthier for your pet.

I have a half bath that I use to separate dogs when in season. The male and female both take turns in the room, so that they are not totally isolated from us for the whole time. When it comes to potty time outside, I let one out and when it is time to switch I pick up the one that is inside, call the one that is outside in and then put the one down outside. It is a pain and a lot more work, but it is definitely worth it.

| I have a pen that I use for my gals when they're in heat. I rotate so that they can get exercise, fresh air and spend time with the family. While they are out it doesn't hurt Connor to spend a little crate time.
