Lisa, mine are five inches endd to end. just right for the little tails and probably too large for dew claws. We had to cut dew claws last time on the two out of the litter that even had them.

Docked or not Yorkies are The most beautiful dogs :)

mine are 5 inches as well. my last litter i could not dock them b/c my husband was out of town....my neighbor was in the hospital w appendicites (sp?) and my daughter had a 102 temp. so i had no help and too scared to do it all my own. so my three boys have tails.

i don't like the look. i see why they dock tails now. from the base they are fat then they get skinny. you can actually see where they need to be docked. i am sure when the hair grows in, you cannot tell.

Thanks so much for your kind comments ! Your dogs are sweet too, such sweet faces ! ......and the pic of your little girl is so cute......you must be a proud Mom, like I am about my now grown, stunning nearly 17yr old girl;) ....pic below when she was 4 ! We mothers, honestly, lol:D
By the way my Gran, now gone, was from NEBRASKA, and moved away when she was 10;) I still have relatives there as her two older (late teens) sisters stayed and married there...:thumbup:

We docked ours ourselves
 
We docked our Giant Schnauzer puppies ourselves versus the trauma and cost of taking them to a vet. We removed dew claws and docked tails per the breed standard.
We watched videos on youtube to learn and we used forceps and our fingers. That's it. I was not pleasant, but the pups were unharmed. Same outcome as going to the vet. We used white oak bark capsules to stop bleeding. We found the liquid bandage glue to be useless. Pups are doing fine.

I am not a show breeder, but this is exactly how I was taught to do it when I worked for a vet in 1966-1972!!! The step by step is just right on target, I do mine at 3 days, if a baby is "iffy", I wait to day 5....I do my tails longer because on day three, I am not good enough to know if I may have someone that is destined for the show ring, so I just do my tails "show length" as described above.....and if you take your index finger on the hand that is turning the hemostat, and put it in the finger hole, you can rapidly twist /rotate that hemostat around and get the job done so very quickly and effortlessly, and the tip seals off completely with NO blood loss.

I absolutely HATE doing it....I have to do one and sit and breathe for a minute...then do another and take a break....I too am praying they outlaw taildocking....just because I hate doing it! I know it is not painful to the babies when you do it early 5 days or less....and dew claws....I hate doing dew claws....If I had people on my waiting lists ask me NOT to do their baby's tail and dew claws, I would love it!

I watched the video...it is great....I was taught to use 2 clamps....1st clamp goes right where you want the tail length to be, the second clamp goes right up next to the 1st clamp, on the side of the tail that is going to come off....and then you put your index finger in the finger hole of the second clamp, and you can rotate that second clamp like an airlplane propeller and the tail comes off! A bit of consolation....remember, nerve development starts at the head and works down to the end of the tail...this is why you do it 5 days or less...the nerves have not completely developed down the tail and it doesnt hurt so much....THE SMALL HEMOSTATS ARE CALLED "MOSQUITOS" OR "MOSQUITO CLAMPS" for those who are buying them from surgical supply...that is the size I use.

My son does the clamping method for me at home, I am a CHIKEN, I can't get myself to do it, I have assisted my son while doing the docking but he does all the clamping, twisting and I use a product call Clotisol to seal the exposed flesh while it heals..

wow pretty old thread but useful information still till this day...i don't think i could ever build up the nerves to dock tails and remove dew claws...

LOL. Same here! I have to use that Pedipaws and file them down with that! That's tough enough. :)

I used a Pedipaws too, and that just took too long, I can drive to the groomers and back before I can file one nail.

YES!!! and my bad!! I have GOT to remember to look at the dates on these threads and quit chiming in on stuff years old!
