Now after watching that, I really feel like this is something that I can do. When my vet does it, he uses scissors, then he stitches them. They cry through the entire process. Using the hemostats seemed to be so much quicker. Is there anything that shows dewclaws step by step? |
Have you tried banding I have been doing a lot of reading on whelping and breeding the last couple of days, I have read about using the hemostats, I could never do that, I read about banding and it seems to be less painful and pretty easy, it's done with the bands use on braces, I have a short video of the procedure I would gladly send to you. |

Actually, the 'banding' method is illegal here. I'm not sure if it applies in all areas of the country, but I know you can be arrested for animal cruelty here in Birmingham if you are caught practicing that method of docking. My aunt worked for many years with a shelter in an area of town notorious for being overrun with Pit Bulls and they ran accross it all the time.:( |
no, did not know it was illegal here, I still think it's less traumatic for the puppies than just cutting off the tail as I've seen in other videos. I am new to all this docking stuff. |
When I took m y first litter in to be docked my vet told me to watch and I could do them myself. I was very wary. I did not do it exactly as he said but combined a few ides and it worked splendidly. I can say 1 very important thing is to MAKE SURE you pulle the skin towards the base of the tail so that whem you have docked it will have enough to cover the stump. I did nto pay close enough attention tot his at first and was worried he would have a bald little nub. I clamp just past the end of the gold usually a pinkys width then leave it clamped for about 30 second. Then I get scissors I got from a hospital and clip off just at the clamp. Muy vet gave me some silver nitrate sticks that look like long wooden matches and held them on the tip. No bleeding etc. No need to look for joints as in puppies that little the bone hasnt hardened yet and it is like a grisly jellylike consistency. . They didnt make one peep and all of their tails turned out beautifully. Bonnie |

This is why docking, dew claws, ear cropping procedures are done at a young age. When performed properly, the pups show very little discomfort. Again, when done properly. My personal opinion is that this would be a much better option than allowing a band to slowly, over days time (when nerves are becoming more rapid) cut off circulation, cut through flesh and not to mention allow an open wound to remain open for infection for days and days, not to mention increased scarring. But again, that is just my take on it. I realize some view it as cruel, some are under the impression that they pups are being tortured, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and unfortunately it is something that everyone just is NOT going to agree on. You just kind of have to find your own stance on the situation over time and roll with it. |
I am so thankful that I joined YT group, in my search on the internet I came across the YT group by accident. I started reading about breeding and whelping because I believe my baby is pregnant, and in the last two (2) weeks I have read all about it on the internet, I have seen videos and read about whelping, docking tails and dew claws removal; I found out about the laws in other countries about the docking of tails, I haven’t found anything about the laws in the U.S. even though I have read and seen the procedures, when and if the time comes I will take the babies for there checkup within 48 hours of birth if I don’t encounter any problems in the whelping and will have the Vet take care of the dew claws and tails because I don’t think I could do this myself. The information and discussion here is very informative, thanks to all of you for YT. |
what size hemostats do you use? i have some but it looks too small. |
