Is this a red flag??
 

I've been speaking with a breeder who has some pups that are akc, then some that aren't because the male is akc but the female isn't. Is this something I should be worried about if buying the pups without papers? I don't plan to breed or show.

It's something that I would be leary about. First of all, why aren't the other girls AKC registered? There has to be some reason for it:

1) The person that they bought those females from didn't want them to be bred.

2) Are the dogs full yorkies or were there some mixing of breeds somewhere along the line.

I'd look elsewhere. Even if you aren't planning on breeding or showing, you want to be sure you're getting the real deal. JMO

Oh ok... she didn't say why she didn't get the one girl registered. But her others are. The only reason I was looking at this litter was because the time frame was better. You bring up good points though... it makes sense that i should be iffy!!

Keep looking, sister. You'll find a reputable breeder that will have registered dogs...on both sides!

Look for someone who shows these dogs. You may pay more, but it's well worth it!

just curious, are you telling people they shouldn't buy from us unless we are show breeders? i hope not. i hope I misread that. but, nena, i would run away from this breeder you are looking at. there is a beautiful little puppy out here somewhere for you.

I think Yorkiedaze was simply suggesting that if you find a show breeder or a breeder listed with ytca.org, you can pretty must rest assured that you will be getting a puppy bred for the standard and of the best possible quality. As surprising as it may be, puppies placed in pet homes with limited registration by show breeders are really not any more expensive. These breeders first interest is placing these puppies in the best possible homes.

I would recommend checking out the YT featured breeders puppies, there are some great breeders there too.......Just a thought since you are a YT Family member!!!

I have a dog sitting a home from a show breeder and the dog has lines from some of the best in the business. I will be taking him in soon to have his Legg Perthes operated on so I guess that doesnt always hold true. I am not meaning to sound defensive but just because they come from show breeders with quality lines doesnt mean you are guaranteed a sound dog. I made the mistake of assuming that was true but it was a bad assumption on my part.

Very well said, especially if your wanting a quality pup AND you don't know a particular breeder, your chance is much higher of getting a healthy, bred to standard pup from a show breeder...Lets face it folks, there are "Yorkie Breeders" on every corner these days...we don't know anything about them, the dogs they are breeding, the conditions of where they come or if they are even going to be around in a year. if you have a problem..why wouldn't you want to buy some of the best, HEALTHY Yorkies out there...no, I'm not a show breeder, but we have bred ours and had pups..The many many phone calls from ppl here in our town that wanted to know if we would sell them was unbelievable, and I thought these ppl have no idea what they could be getting themselves into by wanting a Yorkie so bad and not being educated about what they should ask and expect from a breeder..... I AM going to be a breeder someday, not sure about a show breeder...I desire it, live, eat and breath these dogs, but the time in my life isn't right yet... and, If at that time, I had someone that chose to buy a showbreeders "product" over mine, I would totally understand. I would have nothing to back-up what I do but alot of cute pictures, and thats OK... Sticking with the breeders here on YT is much safer than searching the internet!

Thank you all for your help! I have been searching and searching and all I seem to come up with are breeders that fall short of my requirements! I want one close to home so that I don't have to ship and I can check out their parents and living environment...I am just at a loss!!

exactly....if one isn't registered there could be many reasons like breeder probably did not want that dog to be a breeder and only gave limited reg or the dog was found or stolen (lets hope not), maybe a mix but took the yorkie looks etc....

the main thing here is that a reputable breeder knows his lines....if the dog isn't registered, then their is no line

I am so sorry about your dog. Did you talk to the breeder and wasn't your puppy guaranteed? Reputable AKC show breeders would NEVER breed a dog knowing there was this type genetic problem, their reputations are far to important to them. If the breeder was aware of this problem, everyone should me made aware of who they are.

You know Villette is in the Houston area, you might pm her and ask her about a reputable breeder around you....

Yourkiedaze, I will disagree with you on one point. The price of show/breeder'd dogs, in most cases are considerably less.

I surely would agee with you, as in anything in life, not all show breeders are reputable, what would sent the difference between some than just shows and breeds and a reputable show breeder, was the breeding done with full knowledge of the possibility of Leggs Perthes. If not, and it did ocurr, is she being responsible and standing behind you, money back, helping with the surgery....etc. Things can happen in any breeders program, show or not. And any breeder that says they've never had a problem is not being honest. It's how they handle the problem, if problems do occur.

Nena, You are lucky, you live in Texas and have one of the top show breeders in the country here...One that has been around for about 40 years. PM and I'll give you some info.

hi here's me and my handle :D (I'm Villette) :) I did get my Chanel from a Breeder in Richmond TX and my suggestion is to keep looking. I don't know how much her breeder has changed her breeding program in the last 5 years, but I was very naive when we bought Chanel...I love her more than anything but don't refer her ...I just can't and feel good about it. :(

I'm happy to share where I got Chanel - but her breeder leaves alot to be desired & is totally in it for the money. The breeder's name Betty...llovers yorkies.

I wish I could help you more...If you do find a breeder you're interested in - there's usually someone here who has heard of them or we can try to steer you in the right direction if there are red flags

Yes I have emailed her 3 times and she is aware of it. I got a small response when I told her about the severe luxating patellas like give him a couple extra treats but since I emailed her and told her about the Legg Perthes, I haven't even gotten so much as an email saying Im sorry.

I'm so sorry.....But, like I said there are reputable and not so reputable everywhere......So sorry, I hope you had a contract.

I agree with you Mardelin. Bad things can happen to anyone. It is how they handle those things that shows what they are truely made of. Since I have gotten no reply from her and its been over a month, that answers my questions on the reputable part. I do see where she is selling her yorkies due to bad health. Hope the people that buys them are smarter than I was and dont fall for the champion this and champion that talk and how many points they have so far towards their championships and get a guarantee in writing instead of just believing since she is a show breeder you can assume she will stand behind her dogs. Sorry to sound so negative because I know most of you arent like this but just to say "make sure you buy one from a show breeder" is to me a little hard to hear at the moment. I am not saying you said it but I hear it alot on here.

You have every right to be leary and feeling like you do.....And you are right, about your assessment of just buying from a show breeder. It's not as simple as that....it goes a big step further.....finding a breeder that has been around for a while or at least one that has lines from a breeder that has been around for awhile. One that has a good track record, one you can get references from. Homework and research is one of your greatest weapons when looking for that yorkie.
