You are not a bad breeder. I purchased a total of 3 babies from the same breeders, and each and everyone was paid for in advance.. I would not expect to receive a baby without paying up front.. If today, I was to purchase another baby from the same breeder, they would expect me to pay before that baby was shipped, and anyone who expects puppy first and payment later is out of their mind.... I appauled you for what did.:bravo:.That little furbaby should always come first......:good job: |
Southwest does not allow animals unless they are a service animal. A seeing eye dog or a therapy dog would fit in this class. If you state this is a therapy dog to help you for anxiety reasons they require a letter from a psychiatrist not a general MD. My person blew it with the airline because she was able to fly from her home to Indianapolis with out a dog. The letter this person had stated the dog was flying to help with her anxiety. The airline made the right call- how could you fly in to Indy and not need the dog but need it to fly home. I also found out that this was a free ticket the person was using. IMO the therapy dog business was just to get the dog on the plane and to not have to pay for it. I do know that some airlines have a fee that they charge to take the baby on as your carry on luggage. Most things happen for a reason- Tilly as the buyer wanted the baby called is doing well and happy to be home. I have placed her on the for sale page. I can sleep tonight and I do not feel guilty about my actions in this situation. I informed the other party that I was charging for my gas mileage- 70 miles round trip at what the IRS allows-44.5 cents per mile. 3.00 for the parking- 42.00 for the office visit at the vet and 25.00 Health certificate. 15.00 for the worming check and 15.00 for the worming. Puppy was free of worms but you still have to check and deworm. I just heard back from the other party and she does not feel she should have to pay for the worming or the medication. I am afraid that if push comes to shove I just might tell her she is going to eat the whole $200.00. Live and learn by my mistakes. Just when I think I have seen it all along comes this. If I don't laugh I will cry. I guess I have to see the humor in all this. Off topic but I do have to brag- My stud that I am showing is going to be featured in a National magazine. No not a animal. My 17 year old son. He is a junior this year in high school and is being recruited by over 30 different colleges for football. The end of this month he is having his picture taken and having a interview done by ESPN. There will be a article about him and other midwest recruits and the group picture will be the magazine cover. This is my bright spot and a good reason for me to not have a house full of dogs. My health is not the greatest and I want to be able to enjoy Nick's senior year of high school and be able to watch him every weekend and then play college football. This recruiting business is like taking a special out every week end and fighting for BOB and Group and Best in Show. This is major money when it can cost up 30 to 40 thousand dollars a year at some of these schools like Notre Dame, Duke and the Ivy shools. We are trying to get a full ride scholarship- and things look very bright for his future. |

I think you did the right thing for your baby. I do understand why she was leary of paying when the puppy would not be leaving with her, but that is her problem. She should have crossed her t's & dotted her I's a little more and she would have a puppy now. I personally only take Paypal & Cash, that's it no checks, no cashier's checks, no money orders. I don't even ship for all the issues you stated, and everything else I don't know about it. I suppose I could take the time to find out more, but my Heart isn't in it, and I would make myself physically Ill thinking about my baby until I received a phone call knowing that it was fine. Like I said my Heart wouldn't be in it, even though I'm sure you can make more money when you ship, but money isn't everything. Did you say you where thinking about stopping Breeding? I think that sometimes too. Like it just isn't worth the stress and aggravation. But it is rewarding in so many ways, and that's why we do it, for now. Maybe not Tomorrow, but for Today It's A Good Thing! & You're A Good Breeder in my eyes! |
I don't see where you did anything wrong. I would think it should have been the buyer's responsibility to make sure of the airline policy ahead of time--expecially if you warned them. This is why breeders charge deposits...to help them cover costs if something goes wrong. |
I agree about the deposit, they are non-refundable. If you were the one that made the arrangements for the flight and you botched things, then yes she would deserve the deposit back. But not in this case. |
The good thing from what happened to me is that others can learn. Both buyer and seller. As a breeder anyone who reads this thread will take more time in checking things out when a client is going to fly in. I had never had a problem before. The client will make sure that things are in order- if there are any gray areas. We sure seem to make things complicated for each other in this world. I am just lucky that the puppy is home with me. I am going to change her name - She is not going to be Tilly. She is going back to being Munchkin or Munchy for short. I will be glad when she is placed- to me the joys of breeding are not there at this time. This mess has just placed it in stone that I do not want to have any more litters and deal with the public. Puppies are sure cute- but I guess they are like babies- go to someone elses house enjoy them and you can go home without any of the problems or the work. |
Congratulation on your son, how exciting! Looks like we might see him in the NFL someday!. Tell him to stay local and play for the colts:) Now wouldnt that be a hoot. Oh goodness Kathy.....What a headache about the airline mix up! THat deposit sounds like a keeper to me. Not sure why anyone would feel you driving to the airport, staying there for who know how long, going thru the appts, and etc would not entitle you to it. Then if you told her cash, why would she attempt to pay with a check? If I was the purchaser I would be afraid I would go all that way to come home empty handed, because some breeders would say Im sorry but that was not the agreement. No one wants to deal with a possible bad check, how fun to try to get it cleared, and the person lives hundreds of miles away. No thanks! I had a situation once where the people drove 5 hours for a puppy. When they got here, they said they forgot their money. They said Hows about we take the dog home and send it to you. I said Hows about we dont. They were really nice people, and the daughter was so upset and crying, I probably would have chanced a check at that time, but they didnt even have a check either. They had a friend with them, and she kindly took a cash advance on her credit card to pay for the dog, so they didnt have to drive back without the puppy. The truth is they probably would have been good for the money, but a little voice kept saying "DOnt do it dont do it" COn artists are nice too, that is how they get ya conned! The people called me later and said they understood and never got mad. They said it was their mistake not mine. Just like the airline mistake is not yours. Or how about this one. A deposit is sent, I hold the dog for an extended period of time because they are moving........it was a heck of a long move. Then the day they were suppose to pick up the baby, I wait for hours, at one point they say they are on their way, I call back two hours later, they are still home! They never show up and say I will call later. Well that was it for me, I decided the puppy was not going with them. I find a great home I feel comfy with. I wait for the other people to call, to reschedule, and I would explain the situation to them and I would send back their deposit. I never hear from them until 2 months later! And yes they want their deposit back or a puppy. I ask why didnt you ever call back and left me hanging? They say we ran into some problems, and became homeless twice, my boss ripped me off, etc. Heavens! And I considered these people for one of my puppies. They sounded nice and stable in the beginning, but people sure do fool ya sometimes. I do hope it all works out, try not to worry about it, gotta stay healthy to watch your son strut his stuff! |
When you think that you have heard it all and have done it all- seems like something pops up that you have never expereinced. I am amazed at my age at the number of situations that pop up. We all have stories to tell and share about the crazy things that happen when placing our kids. Yes, to think that we thought we had the right home for the puppies. Sometimes you have to listen to that inner voice. I wanted to get my money on Saturday and run. I just had that feeling-that things were not right- but I could not do that to my puppy or the client. I did the right thing- I stayed and my baby came home with me. I should have no when my computer and printer would not talk to each other on Sat. morn. I had to sit and write evrything out by longhand. I was not gave a home address for the health certificate and had to make a extra trip to the vet to pick it up Sat. morn. I was gave all the signs- and I can only say I just had the gut feeling. Those of you who are moms may have had that feeling when your child has been hurt or is in trouble. It is very real. Well got to run Munchy and her friend Miss Sophie are tearing up tissue paper. Miss Sophie is my Shi-tzu puppy. Sophie is to take Nick's place= boy does she have big shoes to fill. Kathy Those who think it is easy to raise a litter of puppies and place them have a lot to learn. Yes, I am so proud of my son. He has worked very hard- he also wrestles and does the shot put. My baby is a little over 6 foot three and weighs 275-280 pounds. I intend to enjoy his last year of high school. I also look forward to his going to college and spreading his wings. It is hard to let go. They grow up and go away. He has dreams of the NFL but a good education comes first. I am very suprised at how serious he has taken all of this publicity and is still very humble. He was listed in the Top 50 players for the State of Indiana and has made numerous other teams lists. |
Kathy, I dont think you are a bad breeder at all. Congratulations in your son. |
When I bought Lola I paid 2/3 up front and the cost of the shipping. After she arrived I sent the remaining 1/3. I think when these puppies cost so much neither party should take all risk. We talked many many times on the phone, e-mailed and I had a schedule from the airlines(and a call from her that morning). I think something could still be worked out if the two of you wanted to. You would have had to have the puppy vet checked no matter what. You are out your time and she is out her time, $200 and a plane ticket(which aren't cheap). I have no idea why she still wouldn't want the puppy after all that trouble. No, I wouldn't send a puppy with ONLY a $200 deposit but something could have been worked out IMHO. |

Wow, I can't believe this!! I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'd like to share my experience when I flew to CA to pick up my precious baby Chi, Cali Cupcake. :D The breeder and I became great friends on YT. We chatted on the phone and through e-mails allllllllll day long. We made arrangements for me to fly out to Palm Springs to pick up Cali. Since it is such a loooong flight from NY to CA, she (Kathryn) opened up her home to me and asked me to stay over-night with her and her family. I had a BLAST! Kat cooked for me and we stayed up most of the night chatting and just having an over-all great time! I also got to meet Kat's family and see Cali in her first home. It was great. :D Kat and I became great friends and she's coming to visit me in April for a week ... I can't wait! :D :D As for the payments, I fed ex'd her a money order for half of the price. When I arrive in Palm Springs, I gave her an envelope with the remaining balance in CASH. She didn't even want to count it ... she trusted me that much (but I told her to anyway lol :p). I know this is a rare example but Kat and I really hit if off and I had such a wonderful experience. The long fight home gave me and Cali a time to bond and some personal, precious alone time. Overall, my experience was excellent. I listened to everything Kat had to say and we had great communication. We also tried to work out our schedules to make the trip convenient for each other. I made sure to bring CASH so that she would have no worries ... I didn't want to make her uncomfortable or put her in an akward position. I wanted to make Kakthryn feel as comfortlable as possible ... I even brought gifts for her, her children and her 2 Yorkies. Seems to me that if this "buyer" wanted to do the right thing, she would have first MADE SURE THE FLIGHT ALLOWED DOGS! That was the first thing I did before booking my flight! I even booked on the phone (which cost more money) to ensure that I would be able to bring Cali home on that flight with no problems. She also showed a gross lack of respect for YOU. She should NOT have brought a check with her ... what if it bounced? You can bet you'd never see a penny of that money again! She should have done the right thing by you and brought CASH or a money order. Shame on her! :thumbdown I hope this doesn't discourage you too much. You sound like a wonderful breeder and I wish you all the best of luck in the future. :D |
I am sorry this happened. I feel so bad for you I think you handled it the best way it could be handled. The buyer should have had her stuff together. |
