| most males sperm is not mature (i don't think that was the correct wording) until they are at least 1 1/2 year of age and the male himself is not mature until this time. in my experience, under 1 1/2 they don't know what they are doing. it is very hard for a male to become proven unless you have a female yourself or a friend who is willing to let you stud him during her heat. most people want a proven stud so that they know they are not waisting their time, money and heat. they don't want to pay and have nothing happen then have to wait for the next heat which could be a year away. you also need to look at his faults....is he worth breeding. if he is not, you won't have anyone interested in him anyway so you just might have him neutored. also another thing to think about this.......you are not just putting two dogs together .....you will have to have all the knowlege of what happens to the bitch during her pregnancy.....when her due date is....problems with the pregnancy....you may need to help w the delivery....you are there for the whole process and to educate them. the bitches owners will call you almost weekly and ask you questions. if you don't know all of the answers, they will think you do not know what you are doing. the owners of the bitches will come to you for everything and try to blame you for everything if anything were to go wrong. they will blame you if a puppy comes out large and say it was from his genes. they just like to blame the stud owner for anything. one last thing.....you need to be willing to keep the bitch at your home for at least 5 days. you will need to know how to hold the bitch and the male when they do tie. the female could hurt the male so you need to make sure you get them in a good position. i normally put them in my lap. (messy job when they separate...YUCK) there is so much more i could tell you but i have to pick up my daughter from school. just read up on it make sure you are prepared for the good and the bad have a contract make sure your male is worthy...to the standard...color...size make sure he is mature enough...you don't want any blank shooters make sure he has been tested knowledge...knowledge...knowledge....knowledge.... .knowledge read...read...read....read i have been studing for a very long time (much longer than breeding). in my opinion, it is harder than having a breeding bitch. due to the fact you are dealing with someone else and not your own. excuse anything misspelled. i delivered three puppies last night and have not had any sleep. i have to go please please learn all you can....DO IT RIGHT!!!!! too many breeders out there just to make a buck w no concern of the breed. see ya lisa
