HELP...She's in Labor!!! Possible Problem! HELP.....I am with a friend who's 2 year old female is having her first litter. A sac presented about 15 minutes ago and she ruptured it. How long can she go before the pup is delivered since the sac is ruptured??? Is she in danger? Thanks!!!! |
the pups should be in the sacks when they are born. do you mean a mucus plug? when it comes out delivery should be done within 24 hours i believe or take to the vet. http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/medica....html#whelping |
I think Id call a vet asap...you never know if any breeders are online right now...good luck and keep us posted. Dawn |
I have never had this happen but i think that puppy needs to come out soon. see if you can help the contractions along and push on the belly at bit. can you see the puppy? |
ok...getting a little worried. what's going on now? |
Still nothing. She's panting, but not having much as far as contractions. I am fixing to call the vet...just to be sure. I rubbed her belly, had her walk around...but nothing yet. |
The sack will come out before the puppies deliver. The sacks on both of my girls came out and it was a good 2 hours before the first puppy came. I dont think it usually takes that long but it did on mine and they were fine. Is she having contractions and trying to push or is she just relaxing? |
You can call me if you want some help 610-756-6659 |
hope all goes well. keep us posted How nice of sylvian.... |
OK...I called the vet...he says I need to bring her in. I don't know if we're jumping the gun or what. I just don't want to put the pups in jeopardy. My concern is that the sac started to bulge and she popped it. So, the puppy is no longer inside the sac. Being it's her first litter....It's scarey. |
Please keep us posted. Our prayers are with that sweet mama and her pups! |
Good luck it is better to be safe than sorry. The initial sac that comes out doesnt have the puppies in it, it is just a sac with lubrication in it. The puppies will come after it pops but it sounds like seeing the vet would be a good idea. Hope all works out with the puppies and the momma. Keep us posted. |
Ok...here's the update....we got to the vets office and he wanted to do a C-section. I asked him to give her the oxytocin to see if that would help. He said he thought that was wasting time and money, but did it because I wanted to. After about 20 minutes, he said he was going to have to do the section....so we went to leave until it was all done. We were getting in the car, when he came running out to catch us because the first puppy was born. Then, they did an x-ray to see how many others were there and if they were in position. There were 2 more left and they were not in position....so he said he might have to do the section anyway....well, he gave her more oxytocin and she had a second pup which made two girls!!!! There's one left for her to have. He told us we could come home to get a bite to eat since we are only 10 minutes away. I had my children with me and they don't do well on an empty stomach..LOL. So, we are waiting to hear back from the vet. He said since she had 2, then she should be able to do all 3. I'm praying so....I don't want to see her have to go through a section after she's worked so hard to have the others. Keep her and the pups in your prayers...please. Thanks for everything. |
Oh please let us know what the outcome of all of this is! Is everyone ok??! |
OK...more news....the vet just called...the last pup was delivered, but it had no skull!!!!!....that was the root of the whole labor not progressing right. Has any of you had this happen??? The body was perfect...just no skull. We are off to go get her and the two healthy pups!!! Keep them in your prayers! And again, thanks to all of you who responded. I love YT!!!! I'm addicted to this place...hehehe. |
OMG! Keep us posted! No skull? I have never heard that-although I'm not a breeder! Well you did the right thing and I'm glad momma and the 2 babies are good! I get so stressed reading about deliveries that I don't know how you guys do it!! I can cry just thinking of how beautiful it must be to see your baby become a mommy and also to have so much worry!! Can't wait to hear more! Congratulations!!! |
What an emotional day for you all! I'm sorry for the loss of the last pup but happy to hear there is two healthy girls! |
[QUOTE=gentlybentley;964668]OK...more news....the vet just called...the last pup was delivered, but it had no skull!!!!!....that was the root of the whole labor not progressing right. Has any of you had this happen??? The body was perfect...just no skull. I've seen a few pups born with no skulls at the Animal Hospital . |
Congratulations on the two pups... so sorry about the loss of the third one... no skull? How common is that? Did the vet say anything about that condition?.... All the best. :) |

Good luck with the litter! |
I'm glad that the two were born healthy without having to do a c-section! |
Oh no! I'm sorry. I've never heard of a dog being born without a skull. :( What happens now? Do they put him to sleep? |
Congrats on the two healthy little girls and I am sorry about the other one. I have never heard of that before... |
I have heard of them being born with their brain exposed, but I don't understand how that would keep the delivery from progressing. Congratulations and good luck. |
Thank goodness everyone else is ok! So sorry to hear about the little one with no skull. :( |
Best of luck with the two remaining pups. Looking forward to seeing them as they grow. juzme:aimeeyork |

Ditto here..... I kept calling my vet (after hours) and finally I told him that I was coming in and he needed to meet me at the office. We did and within a short time Chattie delivered the first pup, a second was born on the way home and the third came about 45 minutes later. |
Congratulations on the birth of the two fur-daughters. I am sure you are mourning over the little lost one, as well.... sending hugs :ghug: |
Sorry to hear about the third little puppy. Glad mom and other two are doing good. |
anencephaly Anencephaly is the development of a fetus with no brain. I'm no breeder, but know about human reproduction pretty good. It is a neural tube defect, kind of like spina bifida. Only this is in the most extreme form. The fetus looks very strange, at least in humans, and is not viable. Usually they are stillborn. The "skull" is actually there, it just forms over the face. Sometimes there will be brainstem formation and the fetus/baby will live for a very limited time. Without the brainstem, there is no message sent from the brain to breath or for cardiac function. Also, there is no pain...no feeling, because there is no brain to process such. I'm so sorry that one of the babies had this horrible congenital anomaly. In humans, again, it is NOT genetically linked and shouldn't be a consideration in future litters. You may need to check me on this with a vet as a dog maybe different, but I don't think so. You've heard of the umbilical hernia, the cleft palate and other such anomalies that are like that. There again, no genetic link. I know that in humans there have been studies that suggest folic acid supplements prevent neural tube defects like anencephaly. You might ask your vet about folic acid supplements for future litters. The supplement would have to be started BEFORE breeding because the defect occurs VERY early in development. Good luck with your new babies. Can't wait to see pics! |
