Question about possible breeding Ok up front I want to say I have no idea about breeding issues. Please do not jump down my throat for asking questions. I am simply thinking ahead and I do not know what I am going to do. I would like the breeders and knowledgable folks to give me their honest opinion. :D Ok I am looking at getting another yorkie. I have made no decisions about this yet and don't know when I will get one, but I know I want another one. Before I get one I have decided that maybe I should think about one that I can breed in the future (only because I see myself wanting a 3rd yorkie down the line). Anyway my question is, would it be best to get a female or a male for breeding? Health wise is a male best or female? I mean how does a "stud service" work? Do you get to pick a puppy if you have a good AKC registered stud, or does someone just pay you for your stud? Asking as I have seen ads for that sort of service. Again I know absolutely nothing. That is why I am asking and researching ahead of time. Is a female best because I will have all the pups and can choose what I want and find good homes for the rest? I hope all of this makes since. I don't think I have worded my thoughts correctly but I hope you can understand what I am asking. Please let me know what you think. Please be nice. I hope I have not offended anyone, I don't mean to if I do. I don't know what would be offensive above but I just don't want anyone to take this out of context at all. Thanks! :) :animal36 |
I think if your main goal is to get a second and possibly a third Yorkie in the future, then I would get whichever sex you prefer. Is the one you have now altered? I'm assuming that he/she is, since you didn't reference "it" in your post. Anyway, I would think more along the lines of which would be the best "pet" for you. Now, to answer your question about "stud service", most will charge a fee rather than taking a puppy, since Yorkie litters are typically very small (2-3 average, I believe). I have paid $200 and $300 for stud service. Some pay more ($500 is the max I've seen, but I think that particular stud had several CH's in his bloodline). Hope that info helps. Maybe someone more knowledgable will reply. |

um what happened to my post? Man I don't remember what all I said:( |
As far as the best pet goes. I reallly don't have a preference as to the sex of the puppy. My main concern I guess would be which one would be healthier and easiest to breed (If is choose to breed). I am actually talking to a member about buying an adult 2 yr old male who is not altered. However the age concerns me. Again I know nothing about breeding. So if I buy a 2 year old male does he still have alot of time to breed? What is the "cut off age" so to speak? I don't want to buy an adult and then have to rush to breed cause I am not positive I want to do that yet. Ease of breeding would that be male or female?? Basically is a female better to have for breeding or a male? IDK  |

OH also I remember I said something about my yorkie...hehe His name is Cody and he is 15# so we defininatley want a smaller one this time. Not that anything is wrong with him, we love him to death. I just would like a smaller one this time. Also which would get along better with my current 15 pounder - male or female or does it even matter? |

Well I don't have a female first off. That is basically what I am trying to figure out. Do I get a female or do I get a male. Would it be easier if I just told you the member that I am thinking about getting the pup from? You guys may know the pedigree just from the member. |

Something that I would concider is the dog after retirememnt, since they are pets much longer than they are breeding. When a female is retired you can have her spayed and she will make a very nice pet. When a male is retired, you can get him neutered, but that does not mean that he will quit marking or humping. Just something to think about. |
Ok thanks! Now let me ask this. I have a male now who is neutered. He does hump sometimes but nothing major and I haven't "seen" him mark anything. Is it different if they do get bred? My yorkie was fixed right after I got him (at whatever the appropriate age is). I did just ask the owner of the pup and she does not know his blood lines. She says he is AKC registered and Full blooded. |

Just because a dog is nuetered does not mean their instincts are removed, they will still hump. If you want to do this breeding thing, I would suggest that you find a female with a good pedigree. AKC/purebred doesn't tell you a whole lot about it's background. |
Yes you are right. That is why I am asking you guys. I seriously thought if it was AKC registered that was good enough. I didn't know I needed to know bloodlines. How do you go about finding out such information if someone doesn't know this? So how many of you think a female is better for breeding than having a "stud" LOL that sounds funny |

Oh and also what i meant above was once a male is bred, does the humping and marking get worse? |
My stud dogs don't hump, unless of course they are being bred. The marking well, it's something that comes with the territory. By the way, don't buy from any breeder, unless they can recite their dogs pedigree backwards and forwards....tell you about every dog in that pedigree, health, quirks, etc. As a breeder, it is better to have more females and start with a female. |

Prehaps you could PM some of the show breeders. Some will turn a deaf ear to a newbie but many are willing to help when they see a serious person who is wanting to learn. :aimeeyork Juzme |

I am a show breeder and not turning a deaf ear to her. Attempting to answer her questions. |

What lines do you have yourself? I don't recall the name? Are you new to showing? Juzme :aimeeyork |

I figure if I am spending so much money on a puppy then I need to look at all the options out there before hand so I know what I can expect later IF I decide to breed. |

You have some wonderful, reputable breeders down Houston way. I'm not going to kid you. What you are wanting to do is not an easy thing. But, if you want it bad enough and do it the right way, doors will open for you. |
