Having second thoughts, whats the right thing to do? I have a little girl who is 13 weeks old. She has had a deposit on her for a little over a month. Everything seemed okay at first, the home sounded like it would good one but Im having second thoughts now. Its been hard to get a committment on a pick up date from the couple, they seemed to have alot going on, and I have made all the calls. Im used to people calling and asking about their puppy but they never have. Finally I contacted them and told we needed to set up her going home date and they called back two days later, I was already thinking I wanted to not release to them. But they called earlier this week and set up to come today no later then noon they told me. Its about a 4-4 1/2 hr drive for them. I called at 11 am today to see where they were and they hadnt even left yet. They said they would be leaving within the hour they were waiting for a phone call. I wasnt real happy about any of it but I said okay. They had never even bothered to call and say they would be running late. Well at 3 pm I called to see how far in route they were and they still were at home!!!!!! I was told "they were shorted on a paycheck and the boss and hadnt called back" They never even called me again! I asked them what they had bought so far to prepare for the puppy and they hadnt even bought dogfood!I told them to forget it today I had other things to do, Ill call later. They said dont sell the dog to anyone else, we will call next week with some plans.......??????? I just said we will talk about it later and hung up. Im not going to let my babygirl go with them. I wouldnt be able to sleep at night, I just have a terrible feeling about it, after today it sealed it for me for sure. Should I keep a portion of their deposit or should I just return the whole thing and be happy I didnt send my puppy there. Im the one who has changed my mind. |
I think if I was uncompfortable about it then I would just send back the whole deposit and be done with them and find the right loving home she deserves. Good luck with what you decide and I wish the best to you!!! |
i would just give them back their whole deposite and be done with them. you don't want to have to hear anything else from them. i'm sure you'll find her a better home with someone else. |
Thanks Breny:) |
I second that emotion. I would tell the couple that you have decided that you are sending back the deposit and the transaction is "null and void". I don't know if you had a signed contract or anything. You might need to take that into consideration. You'll certainly have no problem selling your puppy to a better qualified buyer. |
Thats what Ill do. I hate to call to tell them I have changed my mind even though they aggravated the hell out of me today. I wont keep any of the deposit just send it all back and find a home I feel comfortable for my puppy. No Contract other then I state I reserve the right to return a deposit for my own reasons. |
I may even be tempted to just send the deposit back without calling if they were that much trouble. I agree with you and don't think I'd want them to have a baby either. Quote:

I would just return the deposit I would just return the deposit and let my spirit be clear. No reason just change of plans like they changed plans. I would avoid altercation with them however, I would copy everything I was sending back to them just to cover myself. I would send it return request the whole nine just to cover me. |
I agree with the others...I would call these people back and tell them that you will be returning their deposit in full. Many times there are reasons why things happen and I think their lack of where this little girl was concerned both before and today was/is a red flag that you still need to find her the perfect forever home. Good luck to you... |

I'm sorry this happened. When sending back the deposit, be sure to send it certified mail. I'd hate for them to try to say they never got it..and try to get you into trouble. Good luck in finding her a fabulous home. Kristie |
Well thanks for the advice! I think I will sleep better now ladies and thats what Im going to do..zzzzzzzzzzz.......sleep Now I hopefully I wont have nightmares.:) |
Your baby is what is important. Mail it all back to her and be done with it. Be grateful you saw their true colors and move on. You are a good breeder!! |
I think you made the right decision! Always go with your gut! |
yes i agree with everyone else send the money back. But please protect yourself make a copy of what ever they sent you is it cash or check or what? also yes send it by certified mail that requires a signature (make sure you asks the post office for the signature one) if the freak out on you just tell them the puppy became ill and you can't sell her and just never answer their phone calls again. Or simply just tell them you guys aren't even responsible enough to set a date to pick her up let alone be able to care for her. People just make me mad!! Good for you though you sound like a great breeder! |

sorry triple post i got a little button happy lol |
Good morning! Does this mean that the puppy is available?........ Need pics please! ;) |
I would totally refund their deposit and be grateful that they will never have your female. If they don't have money for payment, how will they give her vet care? They LIED to you as well while you waited all day. You know my experience with a lying breeder, works both ways and a lying buyer is just as bad. Females are so desirable and you have cute pups and care where they are placed, don't feel badly for those deadbeats. Jessica |
If you have a bad feeling then dont do it. As soon as my deposit was paid for my dog I was so excited and went crazy buying him stuff Im not getting him till the day before Valentines day and he's already got tons of stuff (i started buying stuff the end of December):D I've already researched vets and everything else. Purchased food for him etc.. |

I had to turn someone down for a puppy several months ago. I almost made myself sick over it. When I finally told her "no" she said "oh that's fine, I didn't want to drive that far anyways". Maybe she needed to start out with a houseplant........ |
Since you changed your mind, just send the deposit back. also for future reference, what my hubby does when someonee makes a deal on his beagles to send a deposit. he tells them when it will be ready. If they don't show up by the end of that day (unless he has made prior agreeement with them) The deposit is forfeited. Of course we understand that people work thru the week and drive long trips to get here so if they want to wait until the weekend, once it has been discussed, that is fine. |

send it certified mail and get a delivery confirmation and keep the receipt, do what you can too keep these pple, who seem very flaky, indecisive, and shady, from causing you any potential trouble. gluck i think you are doing the right think ... i know if it were me buying a puppy i wouldn't be able to wait and be calling all the time taht you'd want to get rid of me! hahaha ;) |
You are doing the right thing. If I was a breeder I would never give a puppy to people like that |

Certified mail is a good idea. Ill just be honest about it to them. That I have to feel comfortable with where my puppies go, and I dont so I will be sending the deposit back. I would rather call and let them know the deposit is coming instead of a surprize. I think that would upset them more. I guess they could freak out on me but hey I can get a little freaky myself!:p BUt seriously if they do, I just wont respond to it. If I was going to get nasty I would have when I waited for hours for them to call or show up and come to find out they were at home, and never let me know. I think someone would flip out on me if they were coming to pick up a puppy and I just didnt bother to show, or I wasnt home for the appt. Its for the best, I think its one of those situations, where somemone likes the thought of a puppy, like a kid, but forgets to feed them or doesnt truly realize the expense, the supplies, the vet bills. They were told all that stuff but after putting a deposit never inquired about her again. I did all the calling, and they still didnt have th supplies the day they were supposed to pick her up so they dont need my puppy. |

Now that is funny! |
You know I dont expect people to go all foo foo over puppies, meaning buying clothes, designer carriers....some people just arent like that. Its cool if they are, but its the other stuff that really counts. Like buying the essentials needed to care for the dog to prepare, at least checking once to see how the pup is. If you dont do that is certainly is a reflection to me of what kind of life a puppy will have. Lucky to eat, lucky to get a pat on the head. |
Deposit Smosit.... If it dosen't feel right......don't do it.......good words to live by Give it all back to them, and never have a second thought about it....you'll be doing the right thing for YOU....and your BabyGirl:) |
Sionce you were the one that changed your mind, it would not be ethical to keep part of the deposit. To be honest, I believe they would have a case if they refused to accept the returned deposit and insisted on the puppy. So you will be lucky if they take back the deposit and walk away happy. They might be realizing that this was not a good idea but are afraid to tell you they changed their minds for fear you will keep the deposit. |
They shouldnt be afraid at all. I tell people your deposit is fully refundable. In rare instances I would keep a portion of the deposit, such as keeping a puppy for an extended period of time because they will not prepare for a pick up date. SO maybe they are afraid I would keep it, since they have put off getting the puppy, avoided phone calls and then failed to show up the day of pick up. Heck if someone came to pick up their puppy and they werent happy I would give their deposit back. But if people start out with a problem to commit, and then come up with excuses not to come the day of pick up, then say Ill call sometime next week, arent prepared for the dog at all, I feel are stringing me along, not to count what kind of owners they will probably be. Im going to send all their deposit back. I wont be keeping one penny. I am under no obligation to sell to people I dont feel good about, and where would they have a case at all? I reserve the right to return a deposit for my own reasons. I have valid concerns and am not selling to them. SO they can sue me. |
