| No Swelling During Heat??? Hi Everyone!! For my Very First post I would like to ask you a question about Yorkies in Heat... I have a female that is in heat but she is not swelling at all.. Is that normal?? This is her 4th heat.. She has been bred once before and swelled but this time Im not seeing anything.. and this heat is almost over?? Have any of you Breeders experienced this before?? Can you still breed without swelling?? Thank you all in advance for sharing your knowledge.. I appreciate it.. Skippy |

| Hi, welcome to YT. She can show no external signs of heat and still be fertile. It's called Silent or Dry Heat. My girl usually has a Split Heat, that's fun. She'll start into heat for a week and then it goes away for 2 wks and then start up again for 3 wks. I hope someone with more experience than me can answer it better for you.

| Anyone else care to chime in on my question? With all the breeders here I'm shocked to get only one response. |

Thank you so much for bumping this up for me... That was very kind.. I guess Im left to find a person in my area that is "willing" to share their knowledge.. I guess I just figured with a WHOLE forum so full of Breeders that they would be more willing to share their knowledge.. MY BAD!! Now of course if I were a Yorkie Snob Im sure this would have been bombarded with replies.

I guess we should apologize for not monitoring yt 24/7, but we really all try to do what we can here to help each other. Each female has her own special circumstances and some have silent heats, some have splits and some are regular as clockwork. My mentor uses an ovulation probe to determine levels and even that is not always 100% effective. I have found the best barometer for determining heat cycles is the behavior of the males in the house. Sorry for not having a better answer than that for you.

thats a great remark to post when your asking for advice or help, humble somes to mind... Stacy did a great job explaining the heats.... You asked "can they still breed without swelling" Ive not ever experienced this and your best to ask your vet to health check your girl if there is a heat abnomalty...since she has been bred before he would be the most qualified to answer your questions.

| My guess is you didn't get too many responses because nobody had an answer for you. I've never experienced this with any of my girls. Good advice from feminvstr to "ask your vet". Best of luck.

| I'll chime in with my .02 since you are desperate for answers. I would have your vet take a look and perform a fertility test...that would be the only way (I would think) to be able to tell for sure. I'm fairly new to breeding and can't give you an answer based off of what I have experienced. You say you still have a lot to learn? I would definately try to find someone in your area willing to share their knowledge with you in any case--it's so much better to be able to experience and learn from things "in person" when possible. As for not getting many replies, please don't take it personally, I'm sure it is nothing against you. I have also noticed a huge decline in rapid response answers here from breeders lately. Over the past few months, there have been tons of newer members who ask for help, and then lash out at those who respond for whatever reason. I think that alot of people are just hesitant to answer at this point. Sad, really. Anyway, good luck and I hope you get the help and answers you are looking for. |

| When asking a question and not getting a response could be because people are busy and actually do have a life outside of YT. If you have a question and do not get a response the best resource, if you need an answer immediately, as feminvster stated, go to your Vet. There are a lot of knowledgeable breeders on YT and if they are currently on, they will answer your questions. I would highly recommend, as you stated, to find someone locally that can help you with your questions. I have learned so much about the Yorkie breed by finding a local breeder that has answered so many of my questions. Hope you get the answers you need about your little girl. |

You know Skippy....I'm a little crazy this way....but if no one answered my question....I would either assume a. They have not experienced this to give you a definitive answer... b. They have not SEEN this Post yet......or c. The majority of the members here on YT are NOT Breeders...only pet owners. I have found most Breeders here MORE than willing to share their experience with with fellow members. However, I think it important to mention, most of the Breeders are not Veterinarians. And if you are concerned about the health of your Yorkie, a call or visit would probably be the best decision. Francie
