first day of heat Q?

do you count the first day of heat from when the vulva get all plump or does it start when she starts bleeding?
from what i noticed on 12/14/06 light markings and now it's 12/28/06.

1 week coming in to Season (the swelling)

1 week of showing color (you count from the 1st day of showing color)

1 week coming out (breeding time within this period)

Is the 14th when you noticed color. This is the 29th....she's probably not fertile anymore.

On an average most are fertile from the 10th day of the onset of showing color. Now this may not be the case.......The best way to determine her best time for breeding......and it's a pain.....is take her to vet and have her do a smear daily.......based on what he sees, he'll tell you when to breed.

i thought that the Average bitch ovulates on Day 11 of her heat cycle? i noticed that she had slight marking on the 14th so i counted 10 days till breeding her. she tied on 12/24/06 till the the 29th. From what i read on debbie jensen site "Breeding will take place on days 10, 12,14. for Smaller breeds"

What Debbie states is an average. All bitches are different.....I've seen ovulate on the 12th, 16th and even the 8th.....Now the male sperm will live for 48 hours. So, breeding may take place, but it may not be when she concieves......hence the waiting game.
