Well I thought I'd start a new thread. Today is day 58 from the 1st day of breeding. Her temp is 100.6 this morning. We just got back from the Vets from our xray.

Good news and bad news...

Good news = she's pregnant Bad news = there is only 1 pup

Why is this bad news, you ask??? Well I'm worried about one pup growing too big for her to pass.

At this point my vet said (and he told me this with my last litter) that you can't tell if she will have any issues or not. He told me the baby looks well nourished and is big. But he showed no concern as to needing to do a c section.

I know there are many out there that have only had one and done fine, but I'm a HUGE worry wart.

Does anyone have any advice, a story to share, or anything to let me know what to expect?

I just want to say GOOD LUCK to mom ! I'd be just like you worrying about every little thing too.

Thanks guys. I am a big worrier. I just want to think positive. I thought two pups, at the least. But....no...just one :) I can't wait to meet him/her :thumbup:

You're right to be concerned with one, there is a 50/50 chance that she could require a c-section. Just don't panic and make sure your vet is on call for you.

Its funny, my vet didn't seemed concerned at all. Like I would think he may have said OH we better schedule a section or I think she's going to have problems, or something!? He just said, basically just keep doing what I'm doing , temp and all, and sent me on my way. I know he's a good vet, but I wish he could have told me more.

Okay so, she goes into labor and starts pushing.....how long do I wait before calling the vet? See, now I'm already expecting to have to have a section.

If she is pushing hard for an hour, and no puppy, take her in to the vet! Don't wait! Just go!

If the dam has been pushing hard and stady for half an hour and there is no pup in sight, put on a surgical sterile glove, coat a finger with K-Y jelly and insirt your finger in the vaginal canal to feel if there is a pup in the canal. This is called feathering and sometimes will make the dam get down to business and push some more. If the pup is right there, another few pushes should get it out. If not, alert your vet immediately.

Other danger signs before, during, and after whelping -
Constant hard labor for more than an hour with no results.
Green or oderous discharge
An interval of two hours between pups with occasional hard labor.
Any part of a pup stuck or protruding from the vaginal canal
One hour of hard labor and no puppies.
Three hours of no labor between pups and you think there is another pup.

Temp will fluxuate up and down. When it stays down for 12 hours, you can be pretty sure it's just about time.

This morning she is 99.9 again. A little diahrea during the night. Thanks for everyones support!

Thank you! When her temp drops and things start moving I am going to start a new post and "pray" someone is out there for me to ask questions if I need to , to make sure eveything seems normal. This one pup thing has me a mess !

1 pup, 2 pups, 3 pups....it doesn't matter, we all get nervous. Just look at it this way, you know there's 1, so you're going to be done fast. Oh! make sure you keep a very close watch for about 2 hours after all is done.

Thank you!!! Just curious...could it be possible that the xray could miss one? Although the xray showed just one...perfectly laying, head first, looking ready to meet the world!

Yes, it's possible. I've had x-ray show 2 and ended up with 3. Thought I was done, put pups to nurse, sat back to watch. About a half hour later (after I'd already cleaned mom up), her tail was going up and down, looked and there was another one, coming feet 1st.

x-rays can be deceving (sp) also ,Joseys and Jewels, pup looked huge on the x-ray but they were not, just had all the room in utero to stretch out.Pups can be missed also laying along side of each other.

My one girl delivers when her temp has stayed in 99 temp range for 12 hours. Tonight might be your night.

Is she restless, can't seem to get comfortable? Or better yet, I've noticed that some get a blank stupid look on their faces....

Very quiet tonight. A little restless, just alittle. Sleeping on her back in my arms right now.

This is her 1st litter, and she was bred on 10/19 (am and PM) 10/20 (AM and PM), and 10/21 (AM only)

Yeah, she IS acting weird. She just got off me and has been sitting there on the floor, actually on a pee pad just staring at me and not moving. :confused:

I really hope someone is on tonight if I need them !!!!
