well my aunt called my mom earlier and said that sophie wasnt doing to good. shes panting a lot, shes realllly ancy, and im not sure what its called but that green stuff keeps coming out and its been 3 days since she gave birth. they are taking her to the vet today so hopefully we'll get an update soon

please pray that sophie is okay!

oh and one more thing, i know that puppies can die very easily, so around how many days are you safe with them, that you know they are going to make it? thanks a lot!

Bumping up so the breeders see this - I hope both the mom and babies are going to be ok !! Have them ask the vet about ecamplsia .....I'm not a breeder so I'm clueless here but I emailed Pat - YorkieRose for you

Autumn had a green discharge for a few days after giving birth. My vet said it was because the placentas had seperated from the uterine wall, which was part of the reason why we had two still born puppies. He gave her a shot of penicillin to stave off any infection. Autumn is doing fine and she quit having the green discharge shortly after.

I will keep Sophie in my prayers!

I know a lot of times eclampsia could cause heavy panting amongst other things. I know nothing about this stuff though. I just repeated what I've read. I hope Stacy or one of the other seasoned breeders shows up with some answers soon. Prayers going out to Sophie and her babies. I don't think the babies are really out of the woods till they are old enough to eat and do well on their own without needing mommy to keep them warm or feed them. Just a guess though, again please don't listen to me, I'm just repeating what I've read here before.

sorry I missed it....but I would have suggested an immediate trip to the vet. Green discharge is a sign of infection and not to mess with.

When breeders hear green discharge they panic, but it is dangerous before a puppy is born (placental separation) not after.

The mother can run a fever over the next 24 to 48 hours after whelping and you can expect vaginal discharge for several days. This is normally odorless and variable in color (red to green). The odor would indicate infection more than the color at this point.

I don't think it means infection at this stage, but I would think she needs her uterus cleaned out with a shot of oxytocin (medicine that makes them have labor contractions and forces contents of the uterus out, sometimes takes more than one injection. She might even have a retained puppy in there. I would also want an antibiotic shot just to be safe.

The biggest worry I saw in your post was the heavy panting - this could be a sign of low calcium and she needs an injection of calcium (supplements by mouth won't work) immediately, if bloodwork shows her calcium levels to be low.

Can't really answer the question of when your safe, you've been on YT long enough to know "are we ever really safe?". As long as the pup is not losing any weight - (check twice a day with a kitchen food scale) that is a good sign that all is going well.

Let us know as soon as you can how Sophie is doing.

Lacy's mom has a great point, green discharge is a bad thing prior to whelping. I have had some to have light green clearish discharge a day or so after whelping, nothing ever arised from it, vet check showed no infection. I am not saying that there could not be an infection though, because every dog is different.

Panting can go on for days after a healthy whelp. I say this from experience...they can pant for a few days and have no problems. I have a girl who panted for a week after her pups arrived (both times) but she had no infection and no eclampsia. She seemed to only pant right before she was ready to nurse. She did it in intervals. On the other hand it's better safe than sorry and for anyone who has a first time mom, I'd take her in to be safe. If you feel any "hardening" in her stomach, teats, (purplish/bluish color along with hardening ) thats a sure sign she has problems with her milk and take her in asap if so. If all is well otherwise, put her an ice cube or two in her water from time to time. Take her away from pups to a cooler area where she's not right at a heat pad. Just cool her down from time to time because I know when I had a newborn of my own, my breasts were majorly hot to the touch when they would become engourged with milk. I know all human Mom's and Yorkie mom's are different, and always have the vet check when in the least bit of doubt. Best wishes to you and congrats on your soon to be new little one!

I was just remembering back when my daughter was born from my above post and it got me thinking....did any of you Human Mother's ever do the cold cabbage leaves in the bra? LOL LOL

I did! I know this has nothing to do with Yorkie mommys but it actually worked for me believe it or not! Hey Becki if you're reading, do you have some cabbage stocked up?

There is "green" stuff and then there is "GREEN" stuff...not all green after whelping is bad..and not all green stuff after is okay...her temp needs to be taken, is there any smell of infection, it is thick and copous?
Please let us know how she is doing today...a shot after whelping will prevent any problems 95% of the time...it makes sure all the placentas are expelled..etc..
