| Age for Stud? I have a 5 month old male Yorkie. I have considered breeding him for a litter of puppies just because he's such a sweet dog with a beautiful face. I know NOTHING about breeding dogs. Where is a good place to get information like: How old he has to be before he will be able to use as a stud? What do you charge for stud service? I have his papers and he's registered. He doesn't have any health problems that I'm aware of. Can anyone help me get started in the right direction? Thank you! Ruth

| I would suggest you start by finding an experiences breeder/mentor to work with and talk to. Hands on experience will give you the answers to your question and then some. There is no substitution, nothing that you can learn online that compares to hands on experience. You'll need to find one to work with anyway if you consider breeding him in the future, even if you are just the stud owner...may as well start now while you're trying to make up your mind. |

| Be aware that using him as a stud will trigger many undesirable male traits like marking. Please make sure you are willing to deal with marking issues and keeping him in a belly band 24/7 from then on before you decide to breed him. |

| Please take the time to go to this website and read about breeding. To Breed or Not To Breed, Should I breed my dog? I realize you love your little dude but just because he is cute and sweet does not mean he might be a good candidate for breeding. You also might want to see the over 1000 Yorkies that need homes now on petfinder.com and then also go to puppyfind.com to see how many people are breeding/selling these dogs. You need to be fully aware that millions of pets (including Yorkies) are being euthanized due to pet overpopulation so if you are going to breed your little guy you need to understand the burden you are carrying by doing this. A responsible/reputable breeder will only breed for the betterment of the breed and this includes structure, along with color, temperment etc.
