| tail docking Well Trixies puppies were born on Friday so I have to get their tails docked tomorrow. This is still legal in here in Ireland.I have got the vet to do them the last time and it does hurt them because they cry getting it done although when I went out to the car and they were with mom again they calmed down.I hate having to do this and i do go in with them myself as I feel I am the one getting them done so I should see what they have to go through. This time though My dad could put the bands on as he has done this with Boxer puppies and has had no problems but I just dont know what would be the best for my precious babies, anyone with experience of this please reply as I need to get it done tomorrow as they will be 3 days old |

| I would definitely have the vet do the docking. I have never known anyone to use rubber bands, but it seems to me like it would be much more likely to develop an infection and prolong the pain. I would also be afraid the tip would be more likely to become calloused and have a bald spot. |

| Please let your vet do it. If possible have them do the clamp and twist method, this will cause less pain, less blood and less chances of an infection. Please don't use the rubberband method, it is way more painful for them and it doesn't come out as neat and chances for an infection are alot greater. My cocker had her tail docked using the band method when I got her from a breeder. And like Lacy's mom predicted, her tail is calloused and bald on the tip, no hair will grow on the tip of it. She is also very sensitive about it being touched, I feel really bad that she had to have it done this way. You can tell the difference between a dog's tail that is docked by the vet properly versus using the band method.

| the clamp and twist is very easy and they only feel it for a minor few seconds, once done they quickly settle in with mom. Use a misquito clamp and quick stop. I have never had blood and the tails finish very nicely.

| I wish this was a practice that we could do away with. My puppy also has her tail docked and I passed up a pup that was not docked so I feel very hypocritical saying this. I just feel like it is an unnecessary trauma to put the pups through and there is no real benefit other than cosmetic (what we expect them to look like). I actually feel sorry for the breeders that have to have this done. I know it must be very traumatic for them. I guess we need some humane society to push for laws against tail docking. |
