baby doll face?? I've noticed with all the photos that I've been looking at of the Yorkies..some tend to have a shorter snout (I've read that this trait is called a "baby doll face") If I do decide on the Yorkie as the breed that I will get, I would deffinately want one with a shorter snout. is this hard to come across?..do certain breeders breed for this trait? in other words, will I have trouble finding a puppy with this trait, or is it common?...they just tend to keep that puppy look forever when they have the shorter snout :D |
Baby doll faces aren't too hard to find, at least where I am. Bailey has the baby doll face which is desirable in the show ring, for the most part. Longer noses aren't as desirable. When/If you start looking for a yorkie, ask the breeder to see the parents and ask if the puppies will have the baby doll face. You can usually tell if the pup is going to have a longer nose by the age of 3 months. Good luck  |
i was completely backwords..... i thought it was the other way around (i ei the longer noses were better in the showring) |
Well, I would like to know the difference also. Once, I heard that longer snouts/noses were a sign of inbreeding...Is this true... |
Nose If you look at the photos on websites of show dogs they have the longer nose |
Yes I too, was told that the longer nose Yorkie were the ones on show. I haven't seen any in my neck of the wood in show with short nose, I myself like the looks of the baby face yorkies, I think they look like a little teddy bear. So why if anyone know, do they show the longer nose yorkies? |
The quality of a show yorkie is not only based on the lenght of his nose . I have seen yorkies with longer nose than the baby face and they were splendids but at this show the judge have had a preferrence for shorter noses. That day , even if the coats were poor on the baby faces , they won . |
I prefer a shorter to medium length snout. I have seen some with a really long snout and that just does not appeal to me. I guess it is just all in the eyes of the beholder! Speaking of eyes though, I am sure that you have all noticed that Yorkies seem to have so much expression in their eyes. I love , love, love the looks that Yorkies can give- such additude, inquisitivness, alertness! YORKIES ARE THE BEST! :yorkiesar |

baby doll faces aren't that easy to find in my area. Most you will find will have a longer nose...teddy bear. And then, there's the wolfy face which is really long. I prefer the baby doll but like I said, they're hard to find. Mine have the medium snout which works just fine! |
I think that the ones with the very small snouts have more trouble with their teeth than do the "regular" ones. I've always been lead to believe that the space between their eyes should be a good indication of how long their snout should be in porportion to their head... |
yorkiegal- I have never heard that before, but it sounds reasonable. I have seen some dogs with a very short snout but with such wideset eyes (I mean really wideset). It does look a little strange. I have seen a website where they breed for a short snout and a lot of their dogs have almost a Pekingese look- really wideset and buldgy eyes! They still look cute, but in a different sort of way. :D |
1 Attachment(s) There are a group of breeders here in California that breed "for" the shorter nose extreme babydoll face. I don't think the "extreme babydoll face" typically does well in the show ring but the shorter snout can sometimes do well if you have a judge who likes it. The YTCA prohibits it's breeders from using the terms "babydoll", "teddybear" or "teacup" in their advertising. So, if you want to find that look it will usually not be with a YTCA breeder. They can also go too "extreme" and get into that bulgy eyed pekinese look where the dogs can actually have breathing difficulties. The breeders are aware of this just like any good breeder who is breeding for a specific trait they will mix in some other dogs to avoid this. I got Avalon from a breeder in Southern California who sort of started the trend here because she liked the look. There are now a lot of breeders with the look but they all have her dogs in their line somewhere. |
Unless the puppy has an extremely short muzzle you would most likely NOT be able to tell if it is gonna have it as adult. Yorkies can reack back 4 or 5 generations to get their color, looks, temperment and body colors. The parents are not the sole contributors to the gene pool of a puppy. They carry genes from past generations I have seen a few in the years I have been breeding that were abvious as young puppies. The length of the muzzle is NOT a sign of in-breeding. The Yorkies who come over from Europe and Ireland and such, almost always have the longer muzzle. They are probably what the standard was describing as it was first written.. I have not read the previous answers on this thread, but if YorkieRose has posted, her experience and knowledge is the most accurate, IMO. |
I had a friend that got a longer snout yorkie at a discount because the snout was too long for a show dog. However, her vet told her that the longer snout yorkie is better because it will have less trouble with their eyes and breathing. Her first yorkie was one with a shorter snout and she did have more trouble with it's eyes then she's had with her current (longer snout) yorkie. |
