| Breed Standard Do you breed to the standard, to better the breed? Or do you breed to just breed? If there was flaws in your breeding program would you be able to pick them out? I keep seeing all over about "breed standard" so I wanted to be enlightened!

| Deja vu... Yes, I breed to the standard. As far as LS, LP...no, I couldn't detect that myself...but our vet sure can! As far as other flaws (toplines, bite, etc), yes, I do feel like I could pick them out. Probably not to the extent that some who've bred for a long time can, but that is why I get advice/opinions from other breeders who have been in it longer than myself. |

| Yes I breed to the standard. I show my dogs in the Canadian Kennel Club dog shows here in Canada as a measure of how well my breeding program is working. I also ask and talk to breeders of my breed and others who have a lot more experience and knowledge about movement, structure, coat, colour etc. I will add that I will still see for myself any dog or bitch that has a championship before I would consider using the male for stud or buying a puppy from the bitch or at least be able to ask someone I know and trust that has seen the Yorkie in the rings about their opinion of it. I am very selective of what males I will use at stud and what males I will keep for myself or purchase that will eventually be a stud dog. I am also reasonably selective of what females I will consider to keep for show and breeding. There is yet to be the perfect dog in any breed but there are some faults I or other show breeders, can live with, others I won't, they are sold for pet not to be used for breeding. I know what to look for in good qualities and in faults. I do not believe in breeding just for the sake of breeding when they are purebred dogs. Any breeding should be done with the purpose of contributing toward the betterment of the purebred. It doesn't always work out, but even with this type of breeding program, what I end up selling for pet only are some pretty nice representatives of the breed. |
