| When should I wean? Hi, Can someone tell me when should I completely wean baby girl yorkie off of mom? she is 6 weeks and 2 days but only 1.4.1/4 oz. Isn't that too small to fully wean? How do I tell what her mature weight will be? her mom is 5 lbs. and dad is 3 1/2 lbs. Thanks! Dian & Buckwheat Sugar Muffy |

| I do not forcibaly wean my puppies. Give her gruel or wet puppy food and she will nurse less. Also mom will wean once she has too many sharp teeth! If she is small also give her some Nutristat.

| I begin my weaning process at 5 weeks. I offer puppy gruel and when they start taking to it, mom will want to nurse less. But pups won't! LOL. They will nurse as long as mom will allow it. (and i let them nurse all they want until i have them on VERY thick gruel) By 6 weeks, they should be eating their gruel (which i call puppy mush) fairly well. Once you get them to that point...start dropping in a few peices of hard puppy food in with it. Scatter it around. By 7 weeks, you should have them completely weaned and starting to crunch on their hard food right along with their mush. I decrease the thickness of my puppy mush a few days at a time. I have 7 wk old babies now that are totally eating dry food! Mom will have no part of nursing them now, although she still wants to clean them and sleep next to them. |
