| What should I ask? I am thinking of getting another yorkie when my pup is over kennel cough that he got at the place I bought him. I want a small 4 or 5 pd yorkie. They told me when I bought him he will be about 7 but found out they knew he wouldnt because he already 4.5 at 10 weeks. What do I look for? What do I ask. How can I tell if they are good? I wont ever go back to a pet store. |

| Hi, you are right not a good idea to buy from a pet store. No reputable breeder would ever put a puppy in a pet store for someone else to sell. Pet stores cant' tell you anything about the breed you are buying, health concerns, parentage, because they don't have a clue. I always recommend to buy locally or travel there to meet the breeder, see the dogs, see the puppy that might be for sale. You may go home empty handed but you have a better idea of what you are looking for. Never buy a pup less than 12 weeeks old. Younger than that is plain old too young for this small breed. The weight at 12 weeks doubled will give you a ball park idea of finishing weight. Ask the breeder how long they have been breeding, ask what they know about the lines behind the puppy and how many breeds do they have? If they have several, keep going. The responsible breeder will be asking alot of questions about you, how much you are home, the kind of home you can offer and make sure you are well versed on the care of the YOrkie, grooming requirements, feeding requirements, what to do if you see this that or the other. There should be health guarantees for genetic and congenital health problems should any arise. All puppies are cute but it is their adults you want to see as that will likley be what your puppy will grow up to look like. If you visit the breeder you can see for yourself what their Yorkies look like. To find a breeder, try www.ytca.org there is a breeder contact there. You can go to the AKC website at www.akc.org and find the conformation show programs for a show in your area. You can find the breeders there and ask them if they have anything available for pet. Show breeders do not just sell show dogs. I wish every puppy I produced was a show dog but it doesn't work that way. The ones they sell for pet are lovely representatives of the breed, are AKC registered, but just not what they want to keep for their breeding program. They will be sold under limited registration, you cannot use it for breeding. Many don't sell as young as 12 weeks and actually older is better anyway especially if full size will be on the smaller side. Smaller pups can have more risks of hypoglycemia etc and often a breeder will want to be sure there are no health issues before it will be sold so you don't end up with a major Vet bill or no puppy because it died. |
