| Stud Service Questions Not sure if I'm in the right category, so if I'm not, please direct me. I'm wanting to talk to someone who has a male that they use for stud service. We have a 4 lb mail that is almost a year old and we have thought to stud him out. We do NOT want to go to a breeder that has them like a puppy mill, but to go to someone who breeds for a hobby, if that makes any sense. Any help or direction would be great! Thanks! |

| My advise is to neuter him and leave it up to the reputable breeders. Hobby breeders are generally back yard breeders.

| Why would you want to use him for breeding? You best get him neutered and enjoy him as a pet. My second yorkie came from a hobby breeder and it was a disaster for 121/2 years genetic IBD. The ones that show to better the breed and care about the breed are the people to look at if you are buying a yorkie. Please neuter your yorkie don’t pass on any genetic defects leave it to our wonderful breeders. Susan |

| The primary purpose for breeding should be to improve the breed. In order to prove your male worthy of breeding, please go through the process of proving his value as a breeding animal by: 1) Having him earn his championship title in AKC conformation shows. What this does is prove that he meets/exceeds AKC's conformation standard. 2) Have appropriate genetic testing done to help rule out his passing genetic defects to his get. And be sure to talk with your vet about his general health, make sure his blood panels don't indicate problems, and have him tested for luxating patellas, eye problems etc. 3) Find a hands-on mentor who will be there for guidance throughout the entire process. If he isn't marking (hiking his leg) in your house now, be forewarned that it is likely he will once he is bred. Shelters are filled to the brim and are killing dogs every day to make room for more. Please, before you breed your male be sure that he is going to make a positive impact on the breed a whole and not just contribute to the over population of dogs. |
