The primary purpose for breeding should be to improve the breed. In order to prove your male worthy of breeding, please go through the process of proving his value as a breeding animal by:
1) Having him earn his championship title in AKC conformation shows. What this does is prove that he meets/exceeds AKC's conformation standard.
2) Have appropriate genetic testing done to help rule out his passing genetic defects to his get. And be sure to talk with your vet about his general health, make sure his blood panels don't indicate problems, and have him tested for luxating patellas, eye problems etc.
3) Find a hands-on mentor who will be there for guidance throughout the entire process.
If he isn't marking (hiking his leg) in your house now, be forewarned that it is likely he will once he is bred.
Shelters are filled to the brim and are killing dogs every day to make room for more. Please, before you breed your male be sure that he is going to make a positive impact on the breed a whole and not just contribute to the over population of dogs. |
