Robyn and I are still fairly new yorkie owners. We have both expressed our desire that a tail would have shown us how Gucci feels a little better. His stub is so short it's usually hard to see him wagging it. It does wag daily.:p

Allie and Westley wag their nubs frequently, but I can't think of ever seeing Noah wag his..... We call him our emo dog. He missed critical socialization time due to being at the vet for 10 days, at a time when he needed to be held and taught important things, and I think that plays a key part in why he doesn't wag his nub. Even when he's happy to see you or you're petting him, it's like it's just there....

I have lived all over the United States and I agree. Education and affluence do not guarantee great pet knowledge and care.

I come from an educated, "worldly" family -- yet I was clueless about my Yorkies until I came to Yorkie Talk and learned a lot from people who live outside of New England.

In terms of the tail -- I don't think this is a matter of open mindedness. It's a superficial thing about looks that doesn't matter if you are from New York or Wyoming. If I could go back in time, I would still want Max's tail docked, but Teddy's I would leave. Max is classic and holds his tail straight at all times, Teddy is a tail wagger so I think it would cute on him.

Coming from a vast country, with unique regional differences and attitudes, just like I imagine the USA is, stereotypical responses/assumptions, might just be valid in general terms, but certainly should not be applied to an individual person.

I have no idea personally if Long tails or docked tails have preferential regional differences. But generally speaking, I am pretty confident that different breeds of dogs have sexual preferences.

I am told by my small group of Yorkie breeder friends that here in Ontario where the breeders are, many folks want a female versus a male. In my breed it is different, most folks want the males. They are bigger, more massive, more impressive etc, etc, etc.

As mine is a Rare Breed, thankfully we don't have too many bybers, so the "issue" of tails do not come up so much, as to find a good breeder is difficult, quite frankly there are only a small group of breeders in Canada. And our CKC allows for docked or undocked tails.

My personal wish, is that all clubs in North America, will allow for docked or undocked, cropped or uncropped, etc.

Right now it is Breeders choice in Canada.And I surely hope it stays that way!

There are many reasons for gender preferences, none of which I think are related to region or having an open mind. I wanted a girl Yorkie because my experience was with other breeds where the female is preferable for disposition.

Other people may prefer a girl because they dream of pink pet accessories and think only boys are rough and tumble. There are millions of reasons.

I ended up choosing Max on his picture first, before realizing he was a male. It was meant to be.

They do look so cute when they do wag their tails. I call Galen's a big white plume lol

I was told by some breeders, when I was looking for a pup, a lot of people wanted girls. I was looking for a little boy. I was brought up with males so that is what I was used to. For me they seem more lovey, clingy, and not as hyper. . . .well I got about two out of three ;)

Leave tails!! I am always searching for Silky's and Yorkie breeders who leave tails.

Sounds like a rehash of the civil war. As for my yorkies, mine are a rag tag group. Both are above the standard weight. Sissy has one floppy ear and is a rescue that took a long time to come out of her shell. She still doesn't play but just wants to be hugged and kissed. They both have cropped tails.

My point? I dont breed or show, I love them because they are sweet and lovable and as for bubba he choose me. So if their tails are left undocked it really doesn't matter to me, yes I know its the standard here. When we were kids we had a boxer, with his ears done and he had them taped. I can't tell you how many times he tore the taping off and was bleeding. Finally my father just let it be and he ( the dog not my father) ended up with one half floppy ear. Personally, I'd love to have one with a tail

My thoughts are that a dogs tail should not be docked. I think it is a barbaric practice. The tail tells you a lot about the dogs personality and emotions...Just my personal opinion for what its worth.
