Wow! Through this thread I have learned some about breeding Yorkies. I am thankful for that, and should mention that it was never a thought of mine to breed my Bailey... and it sounds like it was a good thought. I certainly would have done my homework if I chose a different path though. Knowing I didn't want to breed mine, I got him fixed as soon as was possible. I can read the frustration to be on both sides of this particular thread:( I would like to believe that all responses here were done in good faith and, however they were written, with great love and compassion for Yorkies. In the end I just wish the best for Shy and her possible future pups. Cheers!

:thumbup: Absolutely I think we all post our thoughts and advise because of our love and compassion for the breed. I don't care if it is a purebred or a mutt. We are all have the best interest of the dog in mind. Unfortunately we all make mistakes and often things don't go like we plan. Sometimes even the most experienced breeders will lose puppies. Sometimes things are just in God's hands.

Did you decide if you are going to have there tails docked and dew claws removed?

MauiGirl 09-24-2013 03:43 PM

So sorry to hear you lost one. I hope the others and Shy will all do fine. Sending prayers and good thoughts for all to be well.

Thank you and that's what the forum is here for... to help.
Anyway, a quick update on the girls. Shy is doing great. She has energy and gets excited to see me when I check on them. The little girls are energetic and always hungry. I made a quick video and will post it as soon as I get a chance later today. Oh and she's eating very well. She likes to lick water off my fingers when she's laying with her girls but she still gets up to drink when she's thirsty.

I will probably take them to be docked tomorrow sometime. And thank you for the concern. It really does hit me every time I think of it. I don't think I could ever be a regular breeder. If I were to lose another one or have regular encounters of losing newborn puppies it would probably just drive me insane.

jaydoubledub 09-24-2013 04:32 PM

Oh and two of the three surviving girls have gained 1oz and the third has gained .8oz. None of them are keen on being away from mom for more than a few moments lol

I could not imagine I also would end up with a house full of pups because I would get way to attached. If they have dew claws please have those removed they will thank you for that in the end.

I am sorry the little one did not make it. Yes, sometimes newborns will die for a variety of reasons. If she had a cleft palate she would not have been getting the nutrition she needs. That is why is it so important to know soon after the pups are born if they are all able to latch on tightly. Also that is why you monitor their weight gain.

I will also say something that I have been quiet about but I feel that it needs to be said. After seeing the pictures of the momma whelping the puppies I was shocked that you just let the momma do everything. I don't believe in just letting the momma rely on her natural instincts. By letting the momma cut the cords you are risking the lives of the babies because sometimes a momma will cut the cord to short and expose the insides of the pups. Sometimes the momma will chew off a foot while cutting the cords. Also by letting the puppy lie there in the sack the puppy could have been inhaling fluids into it's lungs. The first pup could of been in the birth canal too long. Instead of calling ER you should of been working the puppy out of the birth canal, breaking the sack and getting the fluids out of her lungs. I am not saying this to be harsh but just so you will know that if you whelp another litter it is recommended that you be more hands on and don't be just a spectator.

For now it is very important that the momma eats lots of food. What have you been feeding her prior to her having puppies? You need to try to keep her on her basic diet but you can add some canned puppy food (I prefer Pedigree canned puppy food mixed with Pedigree Healthy Digestion). You can scramble her some eggs. You probably will need to hand feed her for awhile. Keep a close eye on the momma's teats. If they start getting hard and red then that is a sign she is getting mastitis and she would need to go to the vets.

Just wondering: Are puppies not like babies???
Babies don't begin to breathe until the air hits their trigeminal nerve on their face, which is why babies can be born under water and will actually swim... I know that dogs can suffer from trigeminal neuralgia, the same as humans.

You're just like me, I bred my girl once & that was it for me...I worried so much through the whole thing, I think it aged me 10 years & I had back pain for a week! I promised her that I will spay her & she won't ever go through the labor/delivery pains again. I still feel guilty for making her go through that just so I can have more puppies. There are Champions in both my girl's & stud's background, so I thought why not & this was way b4 I found YT. I have the utmost respect for the responsible breeders who do it right. I also hope that you have more of an understanding of the passion we have for these beloved Yorkies & why we must discourage indiscriminate breeding of this noble breed.

So sorry one of the pups didn't make it. Hope all the other pups thrive & I'm sure Shy is an excellent mom, give her xtra kisses & lovin. Are you planing on spaying her once she weans the pups?

So sorry to hear about the loss of your first baby girl. Sending prayers and best wishes for the rest of the Shy pack.

Hi all. Thank you for all the concern. I'm starting to feel a little better now. Mostly because I know that I have four great girls and "all dogs go to heaven." :)
Shy has started gaining a big appetite and each of the 3 babies have gained 2+oz. 6.4oz, 7.4oz, and 7.7oz as of 2 hours ago! Shy was a little underweight right after delivery, but, she's finally getting some meat on her again. I keep trying to bottle feed in the wee hours of the mornings, when I hear baby cries next to my bed (they're in the closet with momma in their whelping box), but, none of them take to it. I have been keeping a very close eye on Shy, looking for signs of eclampsia/calcium fever. Nothing so far. I may take her in this week just to chexk her levels anyway. It breaks my heart when I thinkbof the little girl I lost but it makes me so happy to hold Shy and her girls... We just moved and don't have cable setup yet. Phone internet is almost nil. I'll post pics when I get a chance.

jaydoubledub 09-27-2013 10:10 PM

P.S. Shy never really cared for dry food. I've kinda ticked her though. Dry has more nutrients than wet from what I've read. So all I do is add some water to her dry food til it barely floats and let it sit til it's soggy. I then add slightly less than equal the amount of wet canned food and mix them up. If she doesn't eat it all in one sitting due to too much, then she gets it all 2-3hrs later. I like this because it also adds more water to her intake.

JuliannaB 09-27-2013 11:35 PM

Glad to hear that all is well:)
