Tail Docking I have a question Lilli's pups had their tails docked and their Dewclaws removed today and every since I brought them home they have been really fussy is this normal? The Vet said everyone looked healthy and everything is great but since all of this they have just been winny, do i need to call the vet in the morning or what do i do? Thanks Kristi

| Whenever my puppies have been done they only fuss while it's done. Then are all good to go in about 5 minutes. Perhaps someone else here has had this happen to them? I think that if they are crying then I would call the vet. Of course I am a worrier and it's always best to be safe than sorry.

Yea..mine get fussy. I do notice they quite down more when tails are done at 3 days vs 5 days. But if the pups small I prefer to wait 5 days. Glad alls well! Hugs irene

Hey Irene they where 3 days yesterday when they had it done but I tell you what it was awful I felt so bad for these babies but i know it has to be from the tail docking and dewclaws because they where fine before i took them in and they started to get better last night and has been great today and even letting Lilli walk around for a bit.

What's the difference between the breeds. Is it just the standard?

This subject prompted me to register here. My first Yorkie (over 20 years ago) had her tail. She was 3 1/2 lbs at her heaviest and I loved her tail. It showed so much personality. I would prefer the tail. Now I have a year old female & a 4 month male and am considering breeding them. I will probably not dock the tails but, I will probably keep the puppies in the family.

Kristi, some of my babies in the past have been a little fussy for the rest of the day after having it done. i would say it's nothing to worry about. usually by day 2 they are settled down.

Tail and dewclaws.. I never have the tails docked or the dewclaws done until they are 5 days old.. I do go back with my vet to make sure he docks them exactly where I want them docked! My puppies only fuss (cry) during the procedure and nothing afterwards.. I truly wish the AKC standard would change to keeping their tails, instead of them being docked.. But I doubt it will ever happen..

Ditto to that! Perhaps some day......it does seem like something that could be changed over time. I hope it happens.
