Tiny & Very Pregnant, at least 5, worried sick ;( Tiny & Pregnant with 5 puppies! Worried Sick ;( My baby, Kandi, is very very pregnant, like 51 days now and the vet says there are 5 puppies (x-rayed on 12-20-05) and she has signs of pre-labor, mucous, milk, but her progesterone level isn't low enough for c-section. The vet says that we could lose the whole litter if she delivers before her levels are down. Has anyone ever experienced this? I need some help, advice on what to expect here. I know that 5 is way more than normal, she only weighs 3 pounds (pre-pregnancy) and the labor can kill her if it goes too far before I get her to the vet.. Am taking her everywhere with me, no alone time whatsoever for her at this point, so I am watching her every move as she is my baby, I love her and don't want to risk her life in any way. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks and Merry Christmas |
First of all - stay home with her. I know its the wrong time of year to have to stay home and not shop or anything but it is best for her and the pups to stay put in an atmosphere they are use to and she can relax better. Less stress on her. Second - if you trust your vet: do what he says. Third - if you abosolutely have to go out - ask the vet to take her in to watch her. I know it will cost, but I'd pay and be safe. I know what is done is done and we learn from our mistakes. Question: Why did you breed her, since she is so small? Did anyone advise you against this? You don't have to answer - just food for thought. T. |
Stay at home- do not take this kid out- to do so is putting her at more risk then she presently is in. Follow your Vet's advice. It may come to the point where you have a serious choice to make- save the life of your gal at the expesne of the puppies. You need to stay calm and make clear and positive decisions. You are in a position that none of us can tell you exactly what to do. You will need to follow your heart and the advice of your Vet. I will keep your little gal and the babies in my prayers. |

It happens to the best of us... I'm sorry for what you are going through, accidents happen to ALL of us and we are ALL human. I also agree follow advice from your vet. Just try to make her feel as comfotable as possible, keep her warm and hydrated and try to avoid any stressful activity..... I just went through this with my cocker spaniel.. 6 pups (3 boys/ 3 girls).... it is very stressful but I was lucky she didn't even yell out in pain ,she was very calm and I was there to assist her. You will be surprised at what comes to them as second nature.... My advice is just follow your heart and it's good that you felt comfortable telling us... I just hope other people's comments don't intimidate you. Keep us posted and we are here to help in any way possible.. good luck! |

Good luck to Kandie...and her babies. Seems that you are already doing all you should. I wouldnt take her out anywhere either. I know accidents can and do happen. If I were you, due to her size, I'd go ahead and have a c-sec as soon as the vet gives her the ok on that and have her spayed while they are doing it. Would be best for her and for you in the future. small mom Accidents happen, they can happen to any of us..BUT the time to deal with this problem was 51 days ago. She should have been spayed right after going out of heat. I hope this thread will be helpful to anyone who has the same accident with a tiny. You have been given good advise..good luck |

I assume that you already know of the difficulties that can (and most likely will) happen after the delivery. She might need a pre-scheduled c-section which will add another aspect of concern. Then, since she is so small, eclampsia is a huge concern. Nursing 1 or 2 small puppies might be okay, but a large number of puppies is sure to drain her of calcium.. If you are going to have to supplement feed, you should ask your vet to instruct and supervise you in tube-feeding the babies. If they are really small, they will be worn out from suckling and you will be also..Tube feeding has saved many lives of small puppies... Also, ask the vet about the best time to have her spayed. I do not have it done at a c-section if there are more than 2 puppies. I have medical background and have issues with that practice. So, I schedule spaying when puppies can be safely maintained; I have dentals at the same time and retire the girl. Usually to a pet home for the cost of spaying and dental work.. |

This is why we state over and over again about the dangers involved when breeding/accidental or not a small female. This little gal could have been spayed right after her heat and she would not be in this situation. Bottom line is that our pets give us their love and trust. They trust us to keep their best interest and welfare primary. This is the second such post in less then a month concerning a small female abd problems. I suggest that you sit down with your vet and go over and prepare for each and every situation that may arise from this pregnancy. You are looking at a possible c-section- a mom who can not take care of the number of puppies that she is having, puppies that may be deformed from lack of space in mom and etc. When the time comes for the birth- you will have little time to make such major decisions that will have such a critical effect on so many inoccent lives. |
I just want to say GOOD LUCK! We have a tendency here to get really worked up over tinies, so please forgive any posts that do sting a bit. Know that mostly our thoughts are kind, and concerned for your baby and for you. You have a lot ahead of you with the challenges of birth and the aftercare that will be required. I wish you strength and your little mama and babies the best of health. Please keep us in touch as time progresses because I know darn well everyone is going to be thinking about you from now on. You'll be in my prayers that all will be ok. Hope everything going to be allright and please keep us posted here, we care. I might add when our little girls were first checked out by our vet in the beginning, he suggested "spaying because they were too tiny for litters and to do so would jeprodize their life". We don't regret having it done, just saves this pain you're going thru now down the road for anyone that does not decide to have it done early enough. I sincerely hope you don't lose her and the puppies....Good luck and I really hope things work out and she never gets pregnant again...Bless her little heart - I think you got great advise...she really is too small... but hopefully she'll be lucky and make it thru this... I get so sad reading about tinies being bred.... but you need encouragement right now and I hope you see my post in that light - GOOD LUCK. |

:) Kandi went to the vet this morning, good news, her progesterone level is still up so she is in no immediate danger of premature labor. We are going to keep a close eye on her over the holidays, then go in Tuesday for another test and she is scheduled for her csection on Thursday the 29th which will put her at 59 days :) Might go ahead and do it on Tuesday if the levels are down enough, but the longer we wait, the better!!!Thanks for all the prayers, I know that has played a huge part in her staying pregnant and please continue to pray for her as she goes into this last week. :aimeeyork |
Well I am glad to hear she is doing ok...this has to be hard on her little body...it sounds like your vet is good and others here have given you some good advice...just watch her closely and off to the vet right away if needed- let us know how she does.....and you might want to consider a spay whiel she is having the C-section..... |

I agree on the spaying at the same time and many many prayers go out to Kandi. Please keep us posted, hope the little angel is going to be ok thru it all. |
It is so much better on the female if you spay her at the time of c-section than to have ot done later and cost effictive as well. It is a good idea to have it done then and not have to go through this again - no more accidents. And you can enjoy fully your next New Year's. ;) Best Wishes with mom and her new babies. T. |
