need help I recently found a female yorkie wandering around my yard. I have had her about a week now and no one has claimed her even though I have put ads on Craigslist and filed a found report at the local shelter, also I put flyers up in the neighborhood. I fear she is a throw away dog. The problem is this, the shelter thinks she may be pregnant and I have no idea how to tell or what to watch for. Any advice? |
Get her to the vet a.s.a.p...if you should find the owners I'm sure they will reimburse you..hopefully; has she been checked for a microchip? What makes you believe she is a throwaway and not lost? What are her behaviors? Also, welcome to YT!! |
Take her to the vet and explain what happened. |
No microchip checked that first. She is 5 lbs very clingy she won't stay off of me has to be with me constantly. She wouldn't eat for the first 2 days then she would only eat from my hand today she is eating but off a paper plate won't eat from a bowl. She has a front thumb? That is disconnected the pad seems to be separated from the paw. I have no idea how old she is or what may have gotten her pregnant. It's been over a week and can't find her owner. It is heartbreaking that such a sweetheart isn't being looked for |
Also her tummy is poochy and her nipples are huge |
Please for the sake of her little life get her to a vet quickly. If she was bred by a large dog she could die delivering :(. |
3 Attachment(s) she has an appt for monday she also has a wierd bald spot and scar on her back |
AHHH, she's adorable. I hope the vet can answer your questions... |
I'm far from an expert but it sure looks like she's pregnant. I agree, she needs to see a vet. She looks like she's in good shape. Did you groom her or did she look like that when you found her? |
She looks pregnant and it may be already getting closed to 2 weeks to delivery.... If not near. Glad to hear you have an appointment. She looks adorable and I am sure she found her way to a great responsible human... Who knows, something's are meant to be and she may be a gift for you ! Please read the posts here about delivery and just take it slow and get ready. It will be fine. You are responsible and that is all the difference she needed at this moment. Follow vets advice and enjoy the blessings. I am sure there will be plenty of YTalkers to help , pray and cheer all the way. Blessings. Xoxo |
Please get her microchipped scanned on Monday and see if the vet can trim down her nails they are severely over grown. Remember to take a fecal sample with to the vet for testing. How far from the CA boarder are you? We have a vet tech here who takes in and fosters pregnant strays she prefers to foster small breeds...she does it through Companion Animal Foundation, she's actually my groomer. |

She certainly looks very pregnant, if you are not familiar with whelping you might want to ask your vet if you can bring her in for delivery, just to be safe, she is a real cutie.. I use to have a little girl that would pull her hair out, but only if she didn't get free run of the house, and it looked similar to the pic you posted..talk about a spoiled little hussy she was :D |
Thanks so much for the advice I will update as soon as we get some news |
By the way what should I be feeding her I have seen many posts about a scrambled egg, I just have her eating dog food |
She looks very well groomed...did you do that? What part of Oregon are you in (north, south..)? |
No I found her this way and from what I have read hear most people do that before puppies are born, her nails are very long but she was groomed she turned the bath black when I bathed her but groomed. Central Oregon |
I have this same question posted under general topics as I was new I didn't see my post under the breeding section immediately and thought I did something wrong. Didn't know they had to be reviewed in this section first. Anyway just in case anyone has a question in their minds that I stole this dog looking for a quick buck here is what I posted on that thread. I found a vet clinic that has ultrasound in the office so she will be getting one, no milk yet she threw up a couple times tonight and that kind of freaked me out but we got a box ready just in case but she has settled down. I have ads posted in my local craigslist in 2 places, lost and found and pets it is simple as I was advised by the animal shelter it says where I found her and that is a small dog only, no sex or breed was given. I check craigslist about a thousand times a day as well as local newspaper sites and a few other websites I've found, most people are looking for their stolen microchipped dogs so far I have found no one. I am still holding out hope that her mommy will be found as I was just trying to be nice not looking to spend my entire savings which is very small. I did not steal this dog nor did I want the responsibility of a pregnant dog or any dog but sometimes you have to do what's right not what's convienient. |

Hope all goes well tomorrow, and the vets will give you the support you need at your end. Blessings. Xoxo |
Keep us updated on her condtion |
vet went great today they put her at about 3 years old, she is in good health needs her teeth cleaned, she is having 1 pup it is about 2.5 to 3 inches should be within a week or so, once the pup is born they will go in so she can get a parvo just in case good news is if she gets to stay with is we have decidedd as a family to keep them both even the hubby (a serial lab man) can't bear to part with this angel. The vet also informed me of a spay\nueter clinic that takes place once a month that is pretty cheap. |

Pre-op blood work is critical and life saving, as well the type of anethesia used. I always make sure my dogs are the first ones in the table in the morning and they come home with me that night. While I do hope you find her person, I'd ve leary at this point they aren't out pf their mind posting everywhere looking for their missibg girl let alone pregnant dog-she may hace come from an undesirable home or even let loose due to her pregnancy. So sad, please keep updating. Soubds like you're getting her the best of care. Check the sticky here on spay/neuter and maybe the breeding section about diet and suppliments. |
I agree, if she came from a good home and just accidentally got out somehow, the family would be frantically looking and posting. You would have heard about it by now. The only other thing I can think of is that someone ELSE stole the dog, took her away from her city and found out she was pregnant, then dumped her then the OP found her. Yorkies can get extremely matted in just a few hours out by themselves. She looked so tangle free. But I think what you are doing is right. If no one comes forward it was meant to be. I also agree with the spay/neuter clinics. They don't do pre op bloodwork, and since you don't know anything about this little girl, you won't know how she will handle the anesthesia. There is a lot of varying costs with vets. Call around and see who can do it for less. Bloodwork is usually around $100. Spay usually $150, and meds too. If you can't do it all at once, have bloodwork done a few weeks ahead. As long as she's not sick, the results should still be good until she goes in for the spay. |
If she gets a c-section can the vet spay during that procedure? |
Thanks for that advice I never thought of that I've only ever had a cat that needed spayed and she was always mine. I didn't ask but I would assume they could fix her then. I did find out that the reason the shelter probably wanted me to hold onto her was that a lot of times they have to abort the babies and fix the mom right away, not because they want to but because they can't handle more dogs at any shelter right now. |
sadly she went into labor today and it was still born. She is doing well though and will be back at the vet tomorrow morning |
Well at least you found the poor girl |
I followed this story and was so sad to hear the news. My heart goes out to you and her. |
So very sad So sad to hear the baby passed, great news that Mom is doing well I hope you get to keep her. |
I opted to get her an xray instead of an ultrasound she was supposed to go in tomorrow, this puppy was not fully formed I have suspicions that it has been dead for quite some time. I have never seen something so horrible its feet were mnot right and lots of other things but if I say it out loud I will lose it. As long as she seems ok and no temp she will go in tomorrow otherwise it will be off to the emergency room. I HATE whoever did this to her they probably kicked her and her water broke so they kicked her out in the cold. There is a special place in hell for that person I will never get the image of that puppy out of my head it was so horrible and her crying for it so hard. Thank God my kids were still in school. How do you do that to an animal? |
If I hadn't have had to wait for stupid payday they could have figured it Monday and gotten it out of her and she wouldn't have had to go through this |
