Mom controls the size of the pups before birth, but the genetics of the sire do play a part. A great outcome would be the pups weighing between 3 1/2 to 5 ounces at birth, but some could be larger or smaller. Larger could make for a more difficult delivery and smaller could give you pups too weak to nurse. It's really just a guess, but, with such a small sire, you could have a very small pup at birth. These pups require care much like a preemie. They can be too small to nurse, requiring hand feeding around the clock, and the smaller they are, the more difficult it is for them to maintain body heat. Definitely something to prepare for. It's really good that you will have someone experienced with you. Every whelp is unique.....complications are not uncommon and even a textbook whelp is not something for the novice to do alone. Not sure if you've seen this, but here's a good site with lots of whelping information. Dog Breeding and Canine Reproduction by Debbie Jensen. Dog Breeding and Whelping guide for dog breeders. Hope Mom is eating well for you. It's in the last couple of weeks that the pups do most of their growing, so good nutrition is essential.

| I am glad you will have someone there with you. I didn't have any one here but had several people on speed dial to help us along the way. We did not have a classic whelp and ours had lots of problems along the way but it is not the same for everyone. Hopefully it will go along with no problems. If I can offer some advice and I am no expert it would be to have everything you will need for emergencies. Know signs and symptoms of problems that can go wrong. Knowing it ahead of time helps you if there is problems. I am sure you will do fine and that your whelp will be without complications. Keep us updated and ask all the questions you can. |

| Have your Vets # on speed dial & also the # of the nearest Emergency clinic. I would also have an emergency bag packed in the event that you do have to go quickly. |

| I've been gathering little by little all the supplies from a whelping check list and I really appreciate all the kind comment and will be keeping everyone updated and keep asking questions (and hope not to annoy anyone with them) and Jewel has been so tired on my lap most of the day and the moment she goes off on her own I find her resting in her whelping box

| If I were you and I had questions, I would be asking my mentor, not strangers on the internet. We can't see first hand what is happening, but your mentor can. Certainly people here will try and help, but that is no substitute for an experienced toy dog breeder or vet that can be right there with you physically.

| Breeding a smaller male to a larger female does not guarantee smaller pups. This is a misnomer in the yorkie breed. The female controls the size of the pups while in utero. Now the male does contribute to the size of the pup at adult hood but, so does what is behind him; grandparents and great grandparents.

With a litter this size make sure you have Oral Cal Plus on hand just in case your girl develops eclampsia (doesn't always happen but, it's great to have on hand). You can order it from Revivalanimal.com Also, make sure that the food you are feeding your girl has no soy product in it at all. Soy is a calcium depeleter..... Good Luck and praying your girl has easy free whelp.

| Awk, sorry about the little girl, that must've been tough, but congrats on your baby boys! Glad to hear they and momma are doing well! Remember to keep weighing them to make sure they are gaining- or within the 1st few days, at least maintaining weight... Oh you have so much fun (and hard work) ahead! give the momma a hug from us Last edited by bellemarie; 03-04-2011 at 06:31 AM. Reason: My phone thinks it's smarter than me! |
