I'm not a breeder just what I have learned from my Breeder and the ones here on YT...Make mom nurse them, hold her down if you have too, her mommy instincts should kick in once they start nursing good...and you could try...use a cotton ball and diaper them over mom get them to pee on her...just a few thoughts...I hope they start nursing soon...good luck

Sarah--you cannot hold momma to nurse her babies, try if you like, but in the end...it's a no go, it is what is. If at this point she has "rejected" then she will do the same here on out. YOU are now the "momma" Coax her if you can, but have your supplies ready to do the surrogate thing. Dang on it, I wish I was closer, I would be there. PM'ing with my #. Call me........

I have been following this story from the start.

I'm so glad that the babies are finally here. They are so cute.

Thanks everyone for all the help and advice. It has been a roller coaster that is for sure.

Mom is still showing no interest in the puppies. I am now leaving 2 pups with her at all times. When she does get up, I put the pups back with the others till she sits back down again. Once she is settled then I put 2 back with her. The little boy is latching on just fine so at feeding time I make sure he is with her to start sucking. I then attempt to put another pup there but so far the girls are not latching on. I then feed and diaper each one and then put 2 back with her to settle in. She will walk over to where the puppies are and look then walks away. I never thought of diapering them in front of her so I will try that the next feeding.

Puppies are doing good so far. Only one looks like it does not have sucking down but is now curling tongue so she is getting it. How much should they be eating every 2 hours???

As for mom...well she is not so good. Still not completely with us yet. Can't hold down water yet so she is not eating and just has this terrified look to her. This could be normal but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Please let me know if there is anything else that I need to be doing, checking or watching. Thanks again for everything!!

Hugs from all of us!!

Getting her to diaper them will help kick in the mommy instincts...Moms care and milk is best...but if you have to supplement...use Goats milk and distilled water mix 50/50...goats milks is as close to mom milk as you'll get...the puppy replacer and the milk you get from the vet isn't good for them....make sure the babies are warm before feeding...and you will have to burp them as well...they will need to be feed every 2 hours around the clock...but please don't stop trying to get mom to nurse, it will be a little easier on you and better for the babies to have mom.

Did not know to use goats milk. I have been using the puppy milk from the feed store which is what the vet said. I do try each feeding to get mom to smell, lick or whatever she wants with the pups and she just flat turns her head. Mom still is not eating and can barely hold water down. Hopefully she will start to come around later.

Babies are warm...did not know about the burping....how do you do that with a puppy??? Is it the same as with a child?? Also how much should I be giving them???

They are beautiful! Thank you for doing all this for mom & babies. You are the best thing that could have happened to them.

I am surprised by the lack of input here from the forum's more vocal, reputable, respected breeders. She has a serious problem here with nourishing these pups and getting mom interested. How much to feed is a pretty specific, important question. Anybody??

Default Problems with puppy

Alright, having our first problem. One of the girls is now real congested. Breathing is labored and can hear lots of fluid. Tried suction and got nothing. Been tapping back upright and upside down...some improvement but not enought. Can't eat so used a drop of nutri-cal. What else??????

You should not give Nutri-cal to newborn babies. Nutri-drops are what some breeders give newborns. If you have been feeding her with a dropper she may have got some fluid in her lungs. It is hard for anyone to give medical advice on a newborn without being able to see them. You may want to contact your vet.

Here is an interesting article on puppy survival:
http://www.showpapillons.com/formula.htm

Below is paragraph 10 of that article. I have used the glucose solution on occasion when I had a small pup and it has always helped. I pray all the babies will be okay. I know you have been through a lot.

Quote:
We decided not to wait for 48 hours or even 24 hours, and since interpreting Dr. Van Sickle’s in our own way to our diminutive breed, we have not lost a single puppy, As soon as the bitch is approaching parturition, we make a 5% glucose solution by mixing one teaspoon white corn syrup with a few grains each of sodium chloride (table salt) and potassium chloride (salt substitute) with four tablespoons boiled water. This resembles a Ringer’s glucose-sale fluid but, of course, cannot be used for subcutaneous or intravenous injection because it is not sterile. We put the solution into a dropper bottle. As soon as a whelp is dry and breathing normally, it is weighed on a gram scale and given five or six drops of the solution on its tongue. Even the weakest puppy is able to accept each drop before the next is given. Then the puppy is put with its dam for stimulation and warmth.

Cry

Well friends, I must say that today has been the most difficult day that I can ever remember having. First let me say that the puppy that was having a lot of congestion is clearing up quite a bit. I would do a series of 3 slings every 15 minutes to try to get that fluid out of her lungs. After doing that 4 times and having puppy go upside down while I tapped on her chest seems to have made a world of a difference. Very little noise can be heard and now she is eating again.

On a different note, mom is now in ICU at the emergency vet. After I did my last post I was working with the congested puppy and seen that mom still was not looking too good. I gave her some nutri-cal since she still had not eaten. Offered her some food which she still declined. Then proceeded to feed babies. Had the 3 with her while I was with the congested baby when I seen her kick, fall over and go stiff. With having Yorkie's before I knew what the cause was.....low blood sugar. I immediately put a finger full of nutri-cal in her mouth while smearing it all over her tongue. I then got a syringe of water to put a little in there to help her absorb some. I started shaking the crap out of her to get her to come around. Her eyes rolled back and her legs went stiff. Got the vet on the phone and immediately had to get her to the closest place which is the most expensive vet hospital there is. Took me 5 minutes to get her there and she was still breathing....lifted her head some but still extremely weak. They immediately took her back and started to work on her. She weighed in at 3.8 lbs. She got an IV and 2 antibiotics and also a bolus of glucose. Blood work was done and she was running 103 temp. Now she is sepsis and has glucose level of 30 which is extremely low. They will be doing a fusion of packed red blood cells and continue the iv and antibiotics. I will be picking her up at 7:30 to transport her to my vet who did stay up and called me while at the emergency vet to go over what was wrong and what they were doing. I just got home and I am totally exhausted. If I could ask, would you please keep her and the puppies in your prayers. They need all that they can get right now.

I would also like to say to those that have dogs.........PLEASE HAVE YOU PET SPAYED OR NEUTERED. This has been the worst experience that someone should have to go through. In less than 24 hours, I have spent a little over $5000.00 on a dog that should have never been breed and it was caused by the owners careless mistake. Please, I beg you to re-think letting your dog breed so you can have cute little puppies.

Thank you everyone for all your support, prayers and thoughts. I know I could not have made it this far without all my friends. HUGS!!! Will post an update when I can.
