Please don't judge...need help!! I will try to make this short. My Maddie is (or was) going through her first heat. I DO NOT want her having pups right now. I have been super careful with keeping her and Monkey (my male) apart. She has always had her "lady suit" on (panties) if I am home and if I leave, I make sure to lock Monkey (my male) in his crate. Well...I was called to a VERY important audition for a show and I was super nervous all day, practicing, etc. When I left my home, I put Monkey in his crate as usual and left my girl out. When I returned, they were both just frolicking all over the place like they owned it...I FREAKED OUT! I must have not locked the crate properly! They had been at home for 5 HOURS!!!! I don't know what went on!!! I don't know if I'm being paranoid, but everything she does now makes me think she could be pregnant :( . This is not something I want. I know how dangerous it is for her to be "prego" at this early point. I want to know how soon she would show "symptoms" and if she is "prego", can I abort?? What do I do?? I don't want to lose my girl!! She is still a baby (9.5 months). |

How big is she? The vet does have some thing that will stop a pregnecy its called the morning after pill and comes in a shot too. |
Not judging, accidents happen even when you're careful. Call your vet for info about morning after and get their take on the situation. How big is she? Also, continue to keep them separated, just in case you got lucky and nothing happened. |
Call your vet. They can give her a shot to make her abort. Don't know how far along she is but you need to do it quickly. |
She is 5 lbs right now. She was in her second week I believe (no longer bleeding). She would have allowed him to mount her. This was about 2 weeks ago. I called my vet and told him the situation. All he said was that it was a risk for all dogs just like it is for humans and that there is no way to tell if she would really be in trouble until around 56 days. I don't know why he didn't inform me of this morning after shot. I'm a little angry to be honest. I am going to call him again right now. |
I also want to thank you for your replies :) I was a little nervous mentioning this to everyone. I have this terrible feeling of being irresponsible :( |
I would also call a couple of different vets. Doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. :) |
Okay...spoke to my girl's vet and two others. They all say that there is no such thing as a "morning after" shot for dogs  Maybe they don't have them in CA? According to all, I just have to wait and see. I can go in at around 26 days to see if she actually has any pups in there. They also say that it doesn't matter how young she is. If she's gone into heat she can have puppies, it's just the matter of the size of the pups that is the risk. I still think she's a baby though. I guess I just have to wait it out :( |
I really hope for you that they didn't get "lucky"! *crossing my fingers* |
Hmmmmmm...so is there a "morning after" shot or not? Why would some vets have it and not others? |
Missy and Max did the deed and she didnt get pregnant. I was just as worried as you were and luckily there was nothing to worry about after all. Hopefully your female isnt pregnant but if she is I am sure by being under the vets care and with advice from the wonderful breeders on this forum everything will go smoothly. Keep us posted ;) ! |
Okay. Just got off the phone with my vet...the shot is given within 48 hours of the initial breeding. It's called an ECP shot. There are some side effects along with it...it can throw the bitch back into heat and sometimes death can occur. |

No it doesn't. The first vet didn't tell me about the death thing but the second one I called (yes, I use 3 vets...LOL) warned me about the death thing and the vet will sit down the owners and talk to them about the risks and let the owners decide from there. |

I have heard that if an animal goes into heat, it is perfectly natural to have a normal pregnancy, even in the first heat. Think about nature...animals would be extinct if there were too many complications!! That is, if you are worried of her being pregnant because of complications. Think about 13-14 year old girls getting pregnant now a days. It happens! But only when nature is ready to let it happen. |
Oh my gosh, Kimberly!!! The shot sounds terrible! Have you or anyone you know ever done it before? It seems equally risky, if not, more risky. I'm still going to ask about it out of curiosity. I find it strange that none of the vets I asked here heard about it. Maybe calling it "morning after shot" got them confused, but you would think they would use common sense and figure out what I was talking about...LOL! :p Thanks for finding out what it's actually called. That will be really helpful when I bring it up next time. I love YT!! |
Yes, by now I would think that it's way too late for the shot. The risks are high too, just do the little bit of waiting and hopefully she isn't pregnant. But if she is just maybe see how many if there are too many for here maybe you can arrange a c section and then hopefully everything will turn out ok. I've got my fingers crossed for you... |
I sent you a PM :) |
Just to let you know, I have two girls that were bred in early October, they have a little more than 3 weeks to go and they are just barely starting to show. If they were not my own dogs I would not be able to tell. So as far as being able to just look and tell- it could take a while. I know you are very worried about your baby, but like another member said- if anything can help to ease your nerves just remember nature. This is natural and your girl is luckily not a teenie tiny. Hopefully everything will work out for you. How large is your male? You said the female is 5 lbs...right? |

My fingers are crossed for you that NOTHING happened! Dont blame yourself. Accidents happen. You were being careful!!! Keep us posted! |
When my Cujo had her first heat, (incidently, it happened on her first birthday!!!) she got "hung up" with my male. I didn't want her to have puppies right then. I too was worried, nervous, p.o.'d at my male (like it was something HE should have known not to do), and upset with myself for it happening. I called my vet who told me there was a morning after shot, but that there was no guarentee of it working. He told me that the side effects were not real plesant, but that if I got her to him within 24 hours of it happening, it could be done. So, off we went. She didn't have the side effects that he had told me about. One thing he did say, was that it may prolong her cycle. And boy did it ever. She continued to be in heat for almost 2 months!! Talk about a strange side effect!! She did not have any puppies. Her next cycle wasn't for almost a full year and she again had it for right at 2 months. I didn't think she was ready mentally to have puppies then either. So we waited for her next cycle. In that cycle, she wouldn't have anything to do with my male. Guess she must have remembered what happened the first time she let him get frisky!! (jk) When she turned 3, I had almost given up on her ever having puppies. One night ( didn't even realize that she was in heat) I heard a little yipe and looked around to see her and my male doing the body bump!! Sure nuff, she had 3 pups. All fine and dandy!! I hope it works for you if you chose to do it. Keep us posted on her. Suz |

My cousin's dog, a 7 lb rat terrier accidently was mated by a husky. They rushed her to the vet who had to fix everything torn up. He had to terminate one pupppy and spade her. Thankfully now she is living happily ever after. Unfortunately, Sometimes these things just happen. At least your dog wasn't hurt in all of this. I think she'll end up being fine though. Good story Suz, glad everything went well, you're such a great breeder :o) I will definately recommend you in our area, you do it for the right reasons. |

If she is pregnant she will have morning sickness.....a little vomiting around the 17th to 18th day after breeding. This is when the tiny fetus attaches itself to the uterus....getting ready to grow. D |

There is a shot that can be given.....but it is very very dangerous to the bitch. She could die! Most vets will not even consider giving it....well at least well informed and educated ones. D |
Man-made breed..... Quote:
Yorkies are a totally man made breed. They would not have puppies in the "natural" uh.....in nature....because they would never survive in the first place. They are man-made therefore need human intervention to survive. <g> D |
All purebreds are "man-made" breeds. Of course -- we didn\'t intervene to the point of making them as small as Yorkies. Man has created different breeds of all different shapes and sizes with different temperments and abilities for different purposes. There is no doubt that Yorkies need special care in many ways because of their small size. Carol Jean |
