Help/Ideas please
 

Today was a big day for us, as our little miss Abby had 3 puppies. This is the first time we have gone through the process of a C-section delivery.

Although Abby and puppies are doing great, Abby does seem to be afraid of them, and not really wanting to nurse. I had to put her in a kennel and close her and the pups in so that she would stay with them. Now the vet said that because they were delivered with her asleep this behavior was normal, and she would "kick in" the momma ways.

I just wanted reassurance, i guess from other Yorkie owners that something like this was normal. I feel like there is something I could be /should be doing other than watching and making sure they are warm and with her.

Any thoughts or ideas, heck even words of encouragement are greatly appreciated.

The vet is right , but he missed telling you to supervise her closelly throught the first few days, when i have a c-section like this i set ready to be up all night and all day , the second night you may take naps.
She may kill the puppies if she pushes them away, they may get cold and die if they are away from mom's body heat , also they need to nurse almost non-stop for that nice colostrum and with them nursing the oxitocine will be produced, that is the hormone that will cause her natural instincts to come alive and love the puppies. It sounds like all is good but you really need to be checking her and puppies non-stop for this first night ... do you have a heating pad there to keep things warm? I always use one after any delivery , specially c-sections. Make sure she is eating well too, i like to use "a/d" after c-sections , it gives them plenty of nutrients and it is easy to digest after surgery ... after the milk really comes down and she is liking the puppies to potty and staying with them without having to be locked up , you will be fine to rest.
It sounds like all is going well... just a lot more homework when you have a c-section... Just brew a huge carafe of coffee and enjoy ... all will be well :)

We made it through night 1. Thanks for some ideas, I ended up laying with her in the puppy pin with the puppies and a heating pad most of the night. The pups fed on and off all night and stay warm and seem to have slept well.
Momma dog still seems really exhausted from yesterdays events. I think this will be a whole weekend of laziness for me around the house just laying with her and the babies.
She does try to leave the pups kinda like she is saying, "ok need a break" so every couple of hours ive been getting her out and way for 10-15 mins for a bit of "her" time.

One thing I notice is that your lil mommy is not even 1 year old yet. From what I've read, this could increase the chance that she will have a hard time being a good mommy to the pups. After all, she's still a baby herself. She also looks very small...how big is she?

Thank you for reminding me, when I added her I put her BD in wrong, she is a year and 3 months. She is little. Vet says she will always be. She is 2.4 pounds and was 5.2 pounds minutes before csection. Oddly enough her (Abby's ) mom and dad are both twice her size. lol. somehow she just decided that she wanted to be the midget of the family. lol

I'm sorry I must have misunderstood. She weighed 2.4 lbs before you bred her & you still bred her? :confused: Did you research breeding before you bred her? If you did, you should have discovered that breeding a yorkie that small is very, very dangerous & is not recommended.

Your lil mommy looks very young...she may not bond with them at all cause of her age(I could be wrong) but I would watch her and the pups very closely, make sure she licks there lil bottoms so they potty...if she don't you will have to use a cotton ball and do it yourself every few hours...Mom and the babies are beautiful..Good luck.

I agree with JDS though on this one.
She was far too small at 2.4lbs to be bred in the first place, heck my 14 week old pup is over 3lbs so I can only imagine how tiny she must be.
PLEASE do not breed her again, you have been VERY lucky.
You may not have known she was too small to breed then, but you do now and if you continue to breed her you really are risking her life.
I do not mean to preach I only care about Abby.

WOW less then 3 lbs?! You've been a member here since 2008 and you did not research ANYTHING before breeding her. I hate to be rude but shame on you! She had a c-section, she could of DIED!!!!!!!!! 1 year and 3 months, wow I'm sorry I even opened this thread, this is just so sad. I pray she and her babies don't run into any problems. PLEASE spay her because next time she could DIE!

i have a 10 year old and she is about 41/4 pounds and i thought she was to small to breed i also had a lil one she was 2 pound on the nose and i never even thought about having babies i just can not believe
guess i just need to stop typing

My God, she is small. No wonder she had to have a c-section. What on earth possessed you to breed such a small baby? And I do say baby because 15 months is too young, even in a normal sized girl.

Sorry, but everything about this is animal cruelty in my book. :mad:

You are doing good then... keep up the good work and i believe you will be exhausted but , one has to do what needs to be done...
Unfortunately i have to agree with the other posters as she was too small for breeding, but you got very lucky , very very very lucky ... so do your part and keep mom and puppies safe, eating, warm and nursing... eventually the mother instincts will kick in and she will take over, but due to her minuscule size, you will need to be available 24/ 7 for a few days longer and all will need closed supervision through the nursing process... eclampsia will be your next phantom ... so keep going.
Make sure puppies are gaining weight , use a nice kitchen scale and follow up to make sure their "necks" are getting thicker and they are putting weight ...
What is she eating? Are you feeding her "a/d" ? This is a prescription food you get from your vet, she must have this as with surgery you do not want to risk give her eggs or cheese or anything that will cause her stomach to get upset, the last thing you need is a digestive disagreement ....
Puppies are precious and so it is mom, no doubt about that !!!
