I use a digital thermometer to check their temperature. You insert it in their rectum. Normal temperature for a dog usually ranges between 100 and 101. If they have low blood sugar their temp can go much lower. How big is your girl? Most likely she is just fine. Females that are not spayed can get a uterus infection called pyometra. It can be deadly if not caught right away. Usually the females that get pyometra will not show signs until they are very sick and they usually get it about 3 weeks or longer after their heat cycle has ended. This is another good reason to get her spayed.

Breeding is a huge responsibility and it has lots of risks for the momma and her babies. Should you decide to breed then you need to do lots of research and hopefully get a mentor that has lots of experience with breeding yorkies.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but I'm new to the forum, and couldn't find the place i had posted it..
I've found a thread explaining where to find all my activities now.
She's my first dog, so i tend to panic quite a lot.. specially as she is so little (probably not that little compared to other yorkies, but for me, that I'm used to bigger dogs, she's tiny :)

I've taken her to the twice vet since, and for him, she seems to be alright.
She is a really fussy eater, and i have to keep changing the food, as one day she would eat her dry food with pieces of chicken, and the following day she completely refuses and i have to find an alternative (chicken liver pieces, beef etc)
I know its probably my fault, as i kept trying different things when she wasn't eating when little.. now, there's not much i can do, other than work out what her wish is.. (the house is definitely ruled by her)

I got really worried as she has never been 2 full days without food before, but the doctor said its normal, specially as she really moody with the heat.

She's acting ok, and eating at least once a day now..

Hopefully it will stay like that, and she will start eating a bit more at some stage..

About breeding from her, i think i've made up my mind, and will be probably spaying her when this cycle finishes,

Yes she is about three point 6 pounds and the male is 2.5 pounds proven stud akc registered.

I would never have bred a female that small. Please be prepared for a c-section. I pray your girl will be okay.

Your male may be 2.5 lbs but doesn't mean he throws small birth weights. He may be the runt and have a 10 lb brother, mother or grandpa for that matter. It helps to know the background for several generations not only for size, but more importantly a healthy background.

Yes I. Have an on call vet for those emergencies the male is akc registered is not a runt his background has been looked at he comes from small lunes of yorkies.

I'm not a first time breeder lol and definetly not careless I take great care of all my dogs. I just found it strange that he didn't want to take her when all other males are interested in her , he's actually more interested in my other dogs , we have made the decision to get a new stud since he is old I will get him fixed and just keep him as a retired stud.

He is a cute lil guy but he is old he has a nice silver tan coat and the cutest lil face .

I am not a breeder but have been a member here long enough to have read many horror stories of people breeding tinies who only had one pup and it was so big that the mama didn't make it. I have a tiny I cannot imagine risking her life for a puppy.

My 11 month old Libby is scheduled to get spayed in the morning. I was told by my vet that it was better to get her spayed before she ever had her first heat cycle. He also suggested that I got it done at six months old but with her being so small I was too afraid to get it done then. I am a nervous wreck now about tomorrow. I haven't seen any bleeding at all so I don't think shes been in heat yet. What is this "Silent heat" you guys are talking about? Maybe thats whats going on with her too bc I figured she would have had it by now. Any advice on getting her spayed??

On YorkieTalk and in talking with breeders I know, no reputable Yorkshire Terrier breeder recommends breeding a female under 5 lbs. I would be terrified to breed a little tiny thing like that, despite what any erstwhile vet might say. Deliberately breeding undersized dogs does not improve the breed in any way, rather has caused so much suffering, injury and early death due to tiny, undersized dogs born with a predisposition to many genetic problems, an extra anesthesia risk and easily injured.

She had her first heat that I noticed when she was 18 months old,waiting on the next one still nothing it's been 7 months :(

My Teddi baby will be 8 months next week and i noticed a little bleeding today...What do i need to do now...should i not take her for walks?..I intend to have her spayed when she gets over this first 'heat'....:animal36 :animal-pa :aimeeyork :)
