Can someone explain what a 'hobby' breeder is?

If your ethics and practices are impecciable, your reputation as a breeder/person will preceed you. You will become one that one wants to business with.

Just because one registers their dogs with AKC does not make you reputable.

So if in the past someone showed and championed another breed of dog, then started with yorkies, would they be considered a hobby breeder.

Nope, a hobby breeder is one that has shown and championed dogs of the breed that they are breeding. Now this doesn't mean conformation only, it can be in agility, field, obedience......

I like this chart to compare. They use the term, "Hobby Breeder."

Thank you...I've always wondered what the difference was between a hobby breeder and a back yard breeder. I was way off base...I figured they bred for a litter when the taxes were due or something! lol!

It comes from some of the oldest and the best......and some not YTCA members. But, they know their stuff.

Your Code of Conduct says that breeders must follow the AKC standard, but the AKC does not set the standard, the YTCA does. The AKC is just a registry. On their "Meet the Breeds" page, the standard is copied directly from the YTCA.

Yes, the mother club is the keeper of the standard. But, don't let that fool you. When the standard is established and/or changed it is done with AKC compliance. There is a representative that sits in with the YTCA while changes are being worked on.

AKC is a registery of pure bred dogs; but, not only a registry......and every breed has a standard that the AKC uses to judge pure bred dogs. Judges, even those that are used for UKC dog shows are AKC judges.

Mary - can't a hobby breeder also be one that is curently showing and has champions (both). Not just past tense?
