buying from the internet
 

I have been looking for a male puppy for soooo long now. I finally found parents that I absolutly fell in love with. Both of the parents are exactly what I have been looking for at least in the looks department. The breeder said the dogs are wonderful. They are working dogs, and her dogs get trained everyday to detect some sort of desease or something like that. The puppies are due March 24. She said if she had a male in the litter I would get first pick. So far so good, right. Well here is the bad part I found her online (puppyfind.com). I not saying buying from the internet is bad I just never done it before. It gets worse. She lives in Oregon, and I live in Ohio! That is so far from me. So now I cant see where the puppies are being raised and I have to trust what she tells me. Has anybody bought from the internet before? What was your expierence? How did you trust what you were being told? Is there any certain questions I should ask since I cant see for myself everything I should be checking out? How do I know the pictures of the parents are really the parents and not some picture they found off the internet? Sorry so long I just dont know about this internet thing. If anybody else could add anything please do :)

even if you see the dogs in person there is no guarantee that the "parents" are actually the parents.... you could ask for lots of pictures of their facility, and weekly update on the pups and or mama ........ im sorry, jsut tell me if im being nosy..... but are you sick??? you said that the dogs sensed diseases :confused:

lol.. no I am not sick this is something these dogs are just trained to do. I do think the breeder might be ill. I guess I was just trying to make the point that these dogs must have alot of human contact and be well socialized to be able to be working dogs. I never thought of the parents not being the parents when looking at the them in preson. Hmmm something to think about.

I have had two "internet" experiences regarding the purchase of dogs. The first one was horrible. I did not get the dog (Hailey, a Brussels Griffon) that arrived via airplane I picked out on the web site. We took Hailey anyway but had to return her for a refund due to a hereditary issue. This time we drove to the breeders, (very long drive)....Not happy with breeder whatsoever!!

The second experience was my Yorkie Half-Pint. The breeder is now my friend. It turned out to be a bittersweet experience as Half-Pint passed away.

I most likely will use the internet again if I do not have any luck finding another Yorkie someday down the road in my own surrounding areas.

Any breeder can make false statements regarding their puppies, in person or over the internet. A lot of how you go about it I feel needs to be time given between both the breeder and the person wanting to adopt to build a relationship, to build trust, and a good report. It all takes time, sometimes may take a very long time but it is worth the wait I think.

Research is my favorite word to use regarding all this.

There are both good and bad in everything in life with people and what not....With good judgement, research, and time given there can be a very happy ending with a internet purchased Yorkie.

I read a thread on a different forum that someone had purchased on the internet and the dog was shipped. When it arrived the dogs water in the water bowl was frozen. You can only imagine the stress the dog went through. I came close to purchasing a puppy on the internet and after reading the "lil darlings" thread on this forum I am glad I made my purchase locally.

schatzie- Sorry to hear that your first experience was horrible. That is terrible to hear about Half-Pint. But now Half-Pint is a little doggie angel from up above.

chachi- This breeder will not ship her puppies by themselves. She has heard the same type of horror stories. So I will fly their and pick him up and she will meet me at the airport. I will take him on the plane with me as my carry on and put him under the seat. But I am still not sold yet. I want adopt one of their puppies so bad but never done anything like this before. I guess I still have a little time to think about it the puppies are not due until March 24. So she did not get a deposit yet.

Hello...I've been lurking for a while now and felt I should share my experience buying puppies off the internet. I bought 3 from 3 different breeders. I have to admit I did alot of research and it was a long process. I ended up getting 3 healthy puppies. They arrived at the airport excited to see us. ( it was exciting for us too!!) If they were stressed they seemed to recover quickly.

They soon are going to celebrate their first b-day and I still hear from 2 of the breeders. I think you need to talk via e-mail or phone alot and go with you're gut feelings. There were a couple of puppies I decided against just because of the non-communication between the breeder and myself.

Anyway it was a good experience for us. Our dogs are healthy and we enjoy them so much!! ;)

Are the pictures on the site hers? Some of them look very familiar.

As far as I know they are hers. She never siad they were not. I know for sure that Sweet Fancy Shadow, Sweet Baby Bear Surmiff, Shadow's Sweet Flirty, So-Sweet Thunder Pocket and Just Sweet Kisses are hers. I am not to sure of Sweet Sassy Shadow Fox and Shadow Schwerbel she has not spoke about them. Corina Rain and Baby Cates she said in her article that she has rescued them from a puppy mill.

The two "rescues" are the best quality on her site. I would buy local, get on a waiting list and save for a quality male. Best wishes

I know who 2 of the pics of "rescues" are. Both are UKC Champions.

I found Miffy on www.puppyfind.com. My breeder is from Arkansas and she has been really helpful in information about the puppy and her parents and well, the process was really painless.

I'm only about 6 - 7 hours from Ohio. You can visit me anytime. Not sure I'd have anything you would be looking for, but you can look.

Be very careful. My mom bought a puppy through a breeder on the internet who appeared to be very loving and caring, stating that the puppies are treated like family. Very untrue, she said all the right things and did everything the opposite. This breeder sent my mom an adorable yorkie pup with RINGWORM, a highly contagious fungus. The breeder was well aware, as well as the vet who signed the health certificate. We did not ship the dog back as it was obvious from the inhumane breeder, Ringworm puppy or no $ back. Imagine $1500 for a puppy that is sick. Vet bills are just beginning, as well as a poor puppy that is forced to remain in quarentine. 4-6 weeks at least. I couldn't allow that puppy to go back to someone who looked at her as $$$$$, not a puppy in need. Imagine how dirty that kennel must be for a puppy who as obviously been caged her whole 4 months of life from her actions, to come down with ringworm.

Do not pay by money order, at least pay by credit card and if they do not accept, I advise against it. No recourse, or at least not very easy. Also, verify if the breeder/kennel is registered with the town they are from and check for any complaints against them. Otherwise we learned there is very little recourse online, since online they are not regulated.

If anyone is reading this and has any insight for me of how to put this breeder out of operation or if it is ok to use their name to deter potential buyers from making this same mistake, please advise.

Hi, and thank you for your advise. I am leaning away from the internet their has to be a good breeder locally. I do not have any advise from expierence on how to put the breeder out of operation. But the thread Www.tinydarlings.com in the General Yorkie Discussion Forum is about a breeder that has not gave the puppies to numerous paid buyers because many of excuses (one being the puppy is sick). I know that is a little different situation as yours because you did recieve you puppy. But mabie their would be some helpful information to you as well.

Thank you for the offer. I checked out your website and your dogs are very beautiful! I think I am just gonna try and find a breeder locally. There has to be someone that has good quality Yorkies around here, at least I would hope so.

buying on the internet CAN be a mess. i have heard of sellers that stoop to very unique ways to scam you. a seller on that site stops communicating with the buyer DAYS before pup is to ship after non-refundable deposit has been made. if buyer then cancels they lose their deposit. i know of someone that purchased a pup there and the seller and vet lied about the pup's size. pup was actually a pound larger than expected. you have to beware of internet purchases on this site. :thumbdown

you should immediately notify the better business bureau. if you can't get $$ back you can at least make the report in hopes of exposing the seller AND the vet.

There is such a thing as a "puppy escrow" where a third party holds the money until the puppy arrives healthy and the vet on the other end verifies the good health. Talking to the vet and other references will help reassure you too.

IMHO, the fact that you find a puppy you like on the internet is not such a terrible thing, especially if you cannot find one locally. In California, for instance, if you found a puppy in a part of the country where puppies are less expensive, you could probably actually afford, for the price difference, to fly there and pick up the puppy and fly back with it!

Not ALLbreeders who advertise on the internet are bad or disreputable. Quite the contrary, in my experience. Most of the best show breeders have websites. So called "backyard breeders" and "puppy brokers" aren't all bad either. I have found that most really care about the dogs and want them to go to good homes. They can afford to be picky with buyers because the breed is in high demand and they usually have no problem selling all the puppies in a litter.

I have had both experiences. The first was with a local breeder when I knew nothing about yorkies. I bought 2 expensive males from her. It turns out she is a broker and was selling her gramma's puppies as well as other people's. I was able ot go to her home and she had the puppies in playpens, they were clean, they had space heaters, and she spent a lot of time with me before and after I took the puppies home educating me on their care. I was never able to see the parents althoguh I did not know to ask thet at the time.

She saved one of my puppie's lives and the vet had basically said he was a lost cause. She would have givn me my monty back if he had died. She refunded what my vet bills were. The puppy packet contained a free vet visit. The vet was the best in San Diego. I owe her a lot, but if I had known what to look for in a reputable breeder, I may not have purchased from her. I went with my gut feeling and it all worked out and I got beautiful babies and a great yorkie resourse in the local breeder. I can call her anytime with a question about vaccinations, spaying, feeding, training, anything, and she has great advice.

I recently purchased another puppy over the internet from a breeder in Texas that I found on Puppyfind. Again, if I listened to some of the advice on the forums, she sounds bad becasue she sells unusually colored yorkies, she doesn't breed for tinies, but she has some in almost every litter so she sells them, and she is in Texas (a big puppy mill state) and her phone number is not on her website. But, as it turned out, she initially turned me down in my interest in the puppy when I told her I had 4 dogs and 4 kids. She was screening potential buyers carefully to find the right home.

I sent her another email telling her how I acclimate the dogs, how I work from home, how my youngest child 13 years old and how I was aware of and knew how to handle the fragile small yorkies. I asked to speak to her vet and was convinced after his conversation with me that he was a premiere breeder and I could trust her. She shipped the puppy to me at 15 weeks nd she arrived safely and happt to see us and we are so in love with her now that I cannot imagine life without her. She is perfectly healthy as well and eats like a cow.

Neither of my breeders was a "show breeder" but I was not looking for a show puppy and I believe in my breeders' ethics and business reputations and was comfortable after getting to know them. Maybe I have just been lucky.

I have a friend who worked with this kennel for a yorkie boy. She is very very very happy with the little boy she got and she said that the people that she got him from were wonderful. I just got the site from her. The people invited her right into thier home they had a cup of coffee and chatted for awhile and I know that she is in contact through email all the time with them. I bought my yorkie through someone that advertised on the internet. She actually lived only about 40 min. from me but still I could not come to her house. I was so in love with this pup that it didn't matter if I saw her home or not. Thank God everything has worked out!!

I phoned this breeder today for a future pup, i would like a little brother or sister for Chelsey, i just dont know what is best for her... should i wait till she gets a little older or should i get another one while she is still a baby herself... what do u guys think?

I would say if you have the time for two at one time GO FOR IT! But I would wait until Chelsey is 100% potty trained (I don't know if she is)

i was talking to this breeder, she really sounds nice and invited us to come and visit when the babies are 4 weeks old.... im not doubting another one, but im just nervous about the idea coz Chelsey is still so young... on the other hand, i dont want a too big a age gap between the two either. :)

Well! I wouldn't blame you if you got one! They are GORGEOUS puppies!
