Help with 2 day old puppy Our lil puppy is just 2 days old he only weighed 3.2 oz at bitrth and now is at 2.9oz, I have been checking if he has been eating and everytime I check heis not, I got him to latch on this morning then this afternoon I foundhim all alone in a corner cold and about dead. I have heard that momma knows best butI have never seen it happen. I gothim warm and I tried to get him to latch on but he will not. GOt a bottle and he will not suck. I have an appointment for him but justwanting some opinions on this. |
half goat milk with half bottled water with a little light Kayro syrup and an eye dropper or tiny pet bottle that has the little nipples. Start giving that baby some milk, and keep him wrapped in a little sock and even carry him between your boobs or make a small sling and carry him that way. Let him be up against your body. I hope the Dr. doesn't give him medications of any kind. They are just too young and tiny for that. |
Thanks will try and I will tell the vet no meds |
should I put the dropper back towards his throat? |
carefull :(You have to be carefull not to get anything into his lungs. |
oh that sounds tricky then whats the trick?? I am leaving for the vet soon |
Here is a link that might help http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...er-remedy.html I am trying to see if any experienced breeders are around but don't think anyone is on right now. I'm going to see if this can get moved over to the Breeder forum. Hope you are able to save your little one.:( |
Warm the goat milk/water formula like you would for a baby. Fill the dropper and just let it drip into his mouth. He won't understand but will drink once he gets a taste. Try putting the dropper to the side of his mouth at first and just let a drop get into his mouth. He should get receptive. DON'T squeeze the dropper hard....just let a drop or two into his mouth at a time. Keep him upright while feeding. Be very careful not to let too much in his mouth at once or he'll aspirate. He should get used to it after a couple feedings. He needs to be fed every 2 hours. Burp him and gently rub his belly when done. Mom should do the diapering and will clean any dribbles of milk up. |

Keep in mind that mother's always know when there is something quite not right with a pup and will purposely push it to the side. Your vet will check for hydration and possibly Sub-Q the pup and maybe show you how to do it. 2 days of sub-Q may give this pup the time to develop the strength to suckle. |

I'm not a breeder and won't give advice, but I'm concerned with this statement. "I found him all alone in a corner cold and about dead." You do have them in some sort of whelping pen don't you? I hope someone can give you more information on this. From what I've read, keeping them warm is extremely important. Best of luck! |
Yea the corner of the welping pen. Vet said nothing major wrong and to feed him every hour bout 1/2 dropper to the whole and to try to see if he will latch onto mom before I feed him. I was worried about ids it clef plates or something where they can not suck (forgive my ignorance forgot the name)? Just glad nothing major Hope for the best. |

At this stage, he needs to eat every 2 hours and about 1 cc per ounce of weight (a full dropper is 1 cc). Since he missed some feedings, he may need to be fed more often for a couple of times to get him on track. If he doesn't latch on and nurse, you will need to feed him around the clock. He cannot go all night without eating. Here's a pic that shows a pup nursing well. You'll see that he's working the teat and his tongue is wrapped around and locked on it. Best of luck. |
I have a puppy formula recipe that I swear by... I will pm it to you. Good luck! |

I will be keeping good thought's for your little boy!! |
OK he made it through the night and he is getting around better and is not as limp. BUt I still can not get him to latchon to mom.WHy is this? Then I have someone telling me to give up that if mom pushes him away it is because he is sick and that when he grows up something might be wrong with him, but I cant just let him suffer,I feel if I am breeding I need to help in everyway that I can weather it be for mom or her babies. So fustrated |

He is one of 5, she does lick him and such when I try to ge him to latch, I have not seen any gain yet. He is onlytaking in about 1tablespoon and I dont think that is enough. I have heard bad things about tube feeding and dont even want to try that just because I dont know how. |
Having to hand feed a baby is not uncommon. It is one of the 'not easy' parts to breeding, but sometimes is necessary. Since your vet has seen him and found nothing wrong, there is no reason to give up on him. I have hand fed babies for 3 weeks straight and supplemented for another 2 weeks, but that is what the situation called for. He really must eat regularly or dehydration can set in quickly and then you can have real problems. The goat's milk with equal parts water and a little karo added works very well. It is much easier on the digestion than commercial formulas and some of those have been found unsafe. He should do fine as long as he's fed around the clock. If there are no health issues, he will turn the corner when he's stronger and nurse with the litter. You're just going to have to be 'co-mommy' for a while. |
Thanks so much that makes me feel much better! I am going to look for some goats milk. |

You really want to get him on track and plumping out ASAP. If he's not thriving, it's not recommended to put one through the tail docking and dew claw removal until they are. Not implying that he has to be nursing on his own, but that he really must be showing a gain before any procedure should be done. Best of luck...it's a lot of work but so worth it. He'll likely become your favorite as you bond with him with the feedings. |

I am still giving him milk witht he dropper. His stomach seems very swollen, notlike I have fed him too much because I know I have not. I went to feed him just now and it is very big and hard. I have rubbed it and stuff but I am now afraid to feed him as it looks like it is about to bust. He was in the vet again today and they gave him fluids because he was dehydrated a little. They couldnt tell much as we all know it is hard to tell what the end will be. Any ideas on this? |

What are you feeding him and how much, how often? Have you seen Mom diapering him or seen him poop? Are you burping him after feedings? Is he feeding from Mom at all? How long has his stomach been swollen? It could be gas, he could be full or constipated. Though I've never used it, some here have recommended Mylicon, an over the counter gas relief product for babies. You could try diapering him by using a warm damp cloth on his rear to see if he'll poop. The fluids the vet gave him wouldn't cause this. I looked up the dosage for Mylicon for pups and I found 1/4 cc per pound so for such a small pup a couple drops should be enough. |
