Refusal to sell
 

has anyone ever refused to sell a puppy to a potential owner? if so, what was the general reason? do you have guidelines?

Since this is a hobby and not a pet shop, I turn people away all the time. In 30 plus years I would say I have turned thumbs down on 7 out of 10 people.

WHY...dozens of reasons..my favorite is a person who starts by saying.."we have very expensive Persian carpets"..LOL LOL LOL I have to hang up, I am laughing so hard I can not hear anything else they are saying.

I'm not a breeder, but I can certainly and without reservation say that if I were breeding, I would be VERY particular about who gets my puppies.

I am not a breeder but had an accidental litter (sorry for my ignorance...Bitsy is spayed now) but I turned down lots, lost count, when I sold Bitsy's pups. One lady drove all the way from the Raleigh area to my house to buy two of my girls and I was soooo excited that they were going to get to stay together,but when she got here, she wouldn't sign my contract so she didn't get the girls...on the phone she said she didn't plan to breed them and I told her she'd have to sign a contract and also that I get first chance to take them/buy them back if things doesn't work out.... but when she got here she changed her tune and becasue she drove all that way I think she thought I'd give in and just let her have them....I didn't.

Another lady in particular in my area, long story short, turned out to have a backyard full of s**tzu's that she kept outside and she was tricky too but I had a bad gut feeling about her to start. She sent me a very nasty email and she didn't like my contract either. I told her to take two of the indoor dogs that she keeps outside and bring them inside and treat them with the love and respect that they deserve, instead of bringing two more dogs into that kind of situation. I didn't hear from her again :D

I made a few enemies while finding them good homes, but I DID find them WONDERFUL homes!!! I found that the people who were willing to sign my contract had good intentions for my babies.

My breeder asked us as many questions as we asked her if not more. She told me she refuses to sell to many people for various reasons. I think good breeders refuse to sell all the time. If I had pups I know I would be very choosey where they went.

I remember when my children were small we had a couple litters of Shih Tzu puppies.
My husband said you will never be able to let them go and he was right. The one
I remember most was a woman who came in with 2 unruly children. She couldn't
handle them and when she slapped one across the face so hard that I could feel it,
I asked them to leave. The mother said I think we might want the puppy. I said
I would rather she called me back some other time and that she and her children
needed to build a better relationship before they would bring a dog into the house.
Yet I sold one to a truck driver that was going to take him with as a companion and
watch dog - it was not the typical family dog you would wish for but that was one I
knew would be loved by the way he interacted with him. He asked tons of questions
and I wrote everything down for him. He said his friends on the road were getting
him names of vets along the routes they traveled....he told me, he had lost his wife
a while back and since he loved dogs so much, he thought this would be good for
both of them. I really had a good feeling on that one but if you would have ever
asked me before he came if I would let my pup spend his life in a truck, I'm afraid
I would have said "no". If you love dogs, you can tell people who do in a minute.

Great story Joan, I sold a lab pup to a gentleman who spends alot of time driving in a truck with him. They are inseperable and he often tells me that Clyde is the best dog he ever had. His eyes light up when he talks about him.
I have refused pups to many people for many reasons, usually the most common is small children in the home.

that's my most common reason as well.

Some people want a dog who will not interfer with their life or be an inconvenience...if it is going to have an accident on the carpets, they are going to freak out..we all know it will pee on the Persian rugs, so I do not want them to have my puppy and be upset with it for having an accident.

WOOWEEEEEEEEE your nor kidding. You have no idea how many call the rescue and want perfect trained housebroken tiny well behaved dogs...LOLOLOLOLOL....well duh..either one of 2 things. Either they wouldn't be here in the first placed because who would get rid of such a dog..LOL.. or 2.. that SUPER DOG would be staying with me baby!!!!!!!! :p :p
