Congrats!!!

I had one that crys..when she whelped she screamed so loud everyone in the house heard her. I couldn't get her settled down at all. She was even trying to bite me. I cried and cried and almost stopped breeding after her. I just breed her again a few weeks ago and she did fine this time. I worry about this whelping being like her last but hope where she knows now what is going on she won't.

Default stupid question

Ok, I have a stupid question but I really don't know so I'm gonna ask.
When 2 dogs mate does that mean that the female is pregnant already after the first mating? Or do you have to mate them several times to be sure she is pregnant?

The sperm will be fertile in the female for up to 7 days after mating, so yes most of the time one tie will get the bitch pregnant.

After the first mating, the male need to rest for at least 20 hours to allow his sperm to build back up before mating again.( Older Stud over 4 years old need 36 hours rest).

I personally like to get 3 ties in a 3-4 days period.

I know this is a relatively older post - but i was looking for some insight and I think i found it. My bitch is 17 months and she has come into her second heat. I have been having a battle making a decision whether to breed her or not with my male as he is young and inexperienced so that was a concern.

Health wise they have been checked out by the vet and are both fine The risk for me is still a concern and I know a lot of the time we hear the horror stories but being my first whelp alone i am nervous. I have assisted in whelps with my breeder but I think that nothing prepares you for the real thing.

So my female came into heat last week. Thursday i noticed she was swollen and Friday she was bleeding. this heat has been MUCH lighter than her first though - her first she bled terribly. So maybe i missed the first few days of heat this time around?? I am very thorough with checking daily! They have been together because i thought she was not ready and my male has been very calm around her to the point where i thought maybe he wasn't interested!! My mother bred Schnauzers in the past so i have seen first hand a male that is interested! and he hasnt been acting like that! every now and again he would have a moment of excitement and she would snap at him to leave her alone.

So according to my calculations i thought last night was about day 5 and I was woken up this morning at 2am to terrible crying outside and ran out to find them tied and my female looking rather stressed. I know this can be dangerous for the male so i sat with her and kept her calm to stop her trying to move away from him. They tied for about another 10 to 15 minutes. Neither of them was hurt in any way which was great news!

I just thought it was too soon. and with her crying (which i never expected at all) i thought maybe he has forced himself on her. Would a female let that happen? i was under the impression they wouldnt. Now at least i know the crying is fear and panic and maybe a little pain and is normal.

So there is no going back now and im hoping my breeder will be available to be with me if she is pregnant and when she goes into labour. I have already discussed with the vet this far in advance and made sure he is available at all times which he is. I was thinking of not letting him cover her again because i would like a small litter, but in your opinions is it advisable to let them mate again at least once to ensure fertilisation?

This morning she is what someone called a hussie! She is really up in his face and flirting shamelessly! So perhaps my dates have been wrong! I must say by the time they were done she was very proud of herself and was strutting around like she was the queen, he just went to sleep...typical male!

Reading your posts, it seems like a few gaps. But, I'll attempt to answer your questions.

Since the heat cycle is approximately 21 days.....and you didn't observe any show of color until Friday, it is more than likely that she began showing color prior to this but, didn't catch it. I say this because a female, on the average doesn't stand for a male until approximately 10 days from the onset of showing color. So, you could be a week off on your calculations.

Her crying out is not unusual for a maiden bitch, it happens from time to time. She would never allowed him to mount her had she not been ready. However, why didn't you seperate them as soon as you noticed that she was swollen. You were lucky that neither was injured. You should never allow nature to take it's course and assist in all breedings. I strongly suggest that you keep them seperated and only allow them to breed with you conducting the breedings.

I would allow one more breeding, with your intervention, but skip one day from the last breeding. From then on I would keep them seperated.

Thank you so much for clearing that up for me, i have researched it today and I came across the same answers.

As for keeping them apart, it was my mistake with the calculations. Lesson has been learned dont worry. There are a few reasons for them not being apart at the moment but i wont make excuses, i was at fault.

I have even arranged to be off work from Friday onwards because that was when i was expecting her to be ready, so that i can monitor them every minute of the day but they beat me to it and proved me wrong.

I might let them mate once more and then I have arranged to send him to spend the rest of her heat at my parent's house which will solve the problem of not having areas to separate them.

Time will tell if we have a litter. she will be visiting the vet for another check up and to confirm pregnancy in a few weeks. they both went in before her heat and were given a clean bill of health.

Again, thanks for the thoughts, they are appreciated. I know it's often a touchy subject so i appreciate you being direct but kind!
