My thoughts exactly. I've already had people call me and do the same. Then they told me i was "nuts" for the price i was charging. Which seriously if they couldn't afford a measley 475 they don't need a yorkie. I've paid more for a handbag in the past. I told them it was 200 to hold, and 375 day of pick up. When they showed me proof of neuter i would refund them back 100. And i'm "NUTS"

Here is his story: he was adopted by our neighbor. The first owner was moving and relocating and couldn't keep him. They gave up ownership of the dog, as is. My neighbor did some research and found the original owners of this dog. Apparently, when he was purchased the buyer was given an option of two prices: one price with and one price without papers. She purchased the dog without papers. When my neighbor contacted him to find out the registration information, the breeder informed him he would be more than happy to furnish the papers and registration information for $200! Is that normal???? He wouldn't give us any other information (AKC or CKC or names of the original dam and sire).

If in fact it is customary to charge that kind of money for registration information, then so be it, I will accept it. But if this breeder is being a jerk, I want to know. All we really want to do is to register this sire....and the owner of the sire is willing to pay those fees.

Please don't bash me for not getting this information forthright. I never really wanted to pursue this information. Now that I have reconsidered, I find this has become a sticky situation. If I am being unreasonable and expecting something I don't deserve, then I will accept that.

To your question of providing registration information for $200 more. A breeder usually has two prices. One for a breeding/show dog and another for pet pups. There should be no added price for papers, if the dog is AKC registerable you get AKC papers for limited registration (pet, no breeding rights) or open registration (breeding rights). But, never, never should a breeder charge you more for AKC papers.

Yep! I just ignore those emails now. I tried to educate them, but was a total waste of time. Mary is right, they are bargain shopping and do not care about quality or what we provide for our pups before they leave to ensure the pups are very healthy and has everything they need (shots, testing, vet thorough exams, etc...). Instead these people try to bargin shop and most most often end up paying more at their vets in the end and sometimes end in heartache. I try to do everything I can in my power to ensure my pups are healthy. Yes, it cost money, but it is a major responsiblity to make sure we know.

My vet will not spay/neauter a young pup - period! He explained to me years ago when I was looking into it and explained about the bone development/growth platelets.

To me this is unethical to charge more for papers. What does this tell you about the breeder that does charge more?? Red flag to me!! Hmmmm....
If a dog is not worth breeding - they should never have full registrations, Period!

I know that your situation is a bit different as far as registration is concerned. But, no you are not nuts. There are breeders that withhold AKC papers until shown proof of spay/nueter. But, the motivation of getting a refund may help. What you'll have to do is place the pups in close proximity and monitor........

You're price is not nuts.......if they can't afford that, then they can't afford the care.......as simple as that.

There are a few pet peeves of mine when vetting new families.

1. People e-mail me and their only info and/or question is do you have any pups? I want a (girl/or boy). What is your price? Nothing else......
I usually resond back with: Thank you for your inquiry, however to better answer your questions, please contact me at the # listed below. I never tell anyone if I have pups until I listen to their voices, how they begin their conversation and how they answer a few of my key questions. My feeling is if they don't take the time to phone me, how much time are they going to take for the care of that pup.....they are bargain shopping...

What you are doing is motivating the buyer to actually spay/neuter. You are not charging more for papers. Your case is different. Just wanted to make sure you knew I was not taking you wrong. I am sure your contract is also strict to insist on the spay/neuter.

That is a good idea to make them call you first before you tell them you have pups. I think I will do this too now. I do require them to talk to me before I actually do the reference check and actually we talk quite a bit before I even take that step. I can tell a lot more from phone conversations than them filling out an application and emailing you it back.

I usually do a meet and greet and we do several of those prior to releasing pups....I want to evaluate the family before I waste my time on reference checking......

I also do the meet and greet and pretty picky. I usually do the reference check though before they come to my home. We live in the country, so just one thing I use before meet and greet and to be safe.

The one thing that I have in my contract is providing free lifetime grooming and over night puppy sitting. A bit selfish on my part, but it does give the opportunity of seeing my pups......

I have offered this too, after I heard once too you do this, but no one has taken me up on this since they live a bit away from me. I do get emails/photo up dates and calls from them or I contact them over time to check. You are great Mary - not many have offered this and it is such a great way to also see how they are developing over many years - hands on way.

It has given me insight to how my breeding has developed......My husband thinks I'm nuts. His way of thinking is that I'm giving the dogs away......I tell him that if helps me in finding that perfect home for my pups, I don't care.

I totally agree! I think if a person is breeding for the right reason, they would want to do this. Kudos Mary!!!

In my way of thinking it also tells the new family that I'll be there for them and I stand behind my breeding. It develops a relationship........

The other think I do, is when the new family comes to pick their pup up, I make sure they come with plenty of time. Since I don't pregroom. I go through the grooming process so, they know the basics to help them keep their pups neat and clean inbetween groomings.

To the original poster, I know that this has got a bit off topic. But, if it helps those that are breeding with some insight on how to place puppies, I think it's worth the effort.
